Glad to see this one done Mike, the results show how much work you put into it. Awesome job!

Redleg, I'm just now seeing your response to my question. That's a much more meaningful explanation. I enjoyed your website, too. Thanks for your careful work on these models. I look forward to seeing more from you.
wow. like i stated earlier, an artist. really eye popping and jawdropping. just awesome work my friend. just awesome.

Superb work Mike! I like everything about this guy. All the little "adds on" really bring it to life!

Tony - My old friend, thanks. All in good time. The problem is sooo many models sooo little time. You and your super lady be well!
Yeeeaaaaa Mike, Fine as frog hair she is.
Thanks for bringing it to life.

Shoot Low Boys They're Ridin Ponys
Steve - Thanks, and of course you like the spade...
Earl - Thanks for coming by. Well not the other 3 but I do have the M110 and M110A1 which would complete the variant family of the M110 and if you throw in the M107 that would give me a battery.
Gamera - Thanks, and you are welcome. It is always a pleasure to be here with my friends at FSM
Beautiful work! I love all the small touches. Thanks again for letting us follow along.

Mike!
She is awesome! How I wish that I can do mine justice when I have the courage to start it. Memories are something never to be replaced and seeing what you have achieved here is like going back in time to relive that time in my life. There is nothing to make your heart swell with pride than being in an 8" battery. Just one question Mike. Will you consider building the other three to make a complete battery?? Just kidding. Your love of the artillery truly shows in this beautiful model.
Earl
Yes it IS complete and a real looker.
But of course (out of all the fine accomplishments on this build) you just gotta know I Love that blade.
Karl and Bill - Always good to have you both stop by. Thank you for all your support all these years!
Always love seeing you bring an arty build to life with all the little details Mike and this one's no exception!
BP Models
That's superb work, Mike. One of my favorite builds from you. This one came out awesome!
Gino - Always a pleasure to have you stop by the firing point, thanks.
Bob - Thanks for visiting the site, I need to perform an update there soon. For me, that is part of what the hobby is about, memories, and another big part is friends. Thanks for your memories and for stopping by.
Just back from your site. Great stuff! Is that a PAK-75 I see? Had to babysit them once at Ft. Carson. Charlie 5/29 FA. DivArty rotated them around. Too many silly memories. :) Bob
Awesome job, Mike. She looks great. I love all the little details.

Finally finished the last few little details. Water cans are from Real Model, section chest from resin my parts supply, the pole set is from a Tamiya accessory set and the US Flag is from Archer.
The aiming posts in the case are from a Verlinden resin set, the ramming staff is .030 styrene rod, and the pack from a Tamiya accessory set. Tool accessory bag is from Verlinden and the pack under the seat is from Tamiya. The camo net bag/tarp under equipment is scratch made. Net pole bag is from Tamiya along with the packs. The net is from AFV. I have to say the new AFV nets are a PITA to work with. They are VERY delicate and it is difficult to “open” up the leaf sections without ripping the net. My first try to roll the net was not a good look, thus I carefully unrolled and folded. It is the best match for modern nets but very delicate! After finalizing touch ups with AK Wash for desert colors and MIG Desert Sand pigment. Here is the overall view from the rear Looking from the front View from the gunner’s side Lastly the asst. gunner’s side This was a fun one. Next up the M274 Mule for a quick little build. As always if you have any comments, please feel free to drop in. Rounds Complete!! EOM!

Joe - Thanks, I truly appreciate your comment using the term "artist" . Something many forget that our hobby is an art. Being termed an artist is an honor.
my friend it makes me take a step or two back when i see a true artist work his craft. you always show your expertise on the big guns and your passion for them with your finishes.
you are a true artist.
Johan - Thanks for the kind words...a full scale on the front lawn.....someday!!!
Earl - The Funny Duck Club... may have been in the rear eating the track dust but it had its advantages!! Thanks for the comments. As for an article, I leave those to my buddies Bill or Karl. I have been down that path, not my thing. I do keep a web site and everyone is always welcome there. Just click on my logo below. Lastly as for the memories,my pleasure. It is one of the reasons I build almost strictly artillery, memories and a big part of my life.
Mike,
This is truly outstanding! This girl could nail a needle in a haystack, just as you are doing with this build!! You should publish your build in FSM, my bet would be that it would bring others back into the hobby. From one experienced M110 to another, bless you and thanks for all of the memories which you brought back to an old horse soldier.
How could we ever take the M110 out of the Army arsenal?
Stay well Mike,
That was part of the memories, being in FDC we brought up the rear. Ah, the good old days!
Hi,
The finish and your attention to detail is remarkable.
Like the fire extinguisher, seat, the dust covers.
Very inspiring - I want one!
Very Best Regards
Johan
Bob - Ahhhh... memories. Thanks for the comments.
Just remembering "GRAF" tank trail dust. On one of these? <shudder> Great job, you "splashed" the target! Bob
Sprue - Thanks for the peek and for the comments.
All the added details and fine touches Looks good

Well done Am reluctantly looking to the finish pictures of this beauty...can you say that about big gun arty?
us missile guys are always shooting their mouths off

Building the perfect model---just not quite yet
Karl - Your words are too kind...glad you like the seat....it is a PITA on the model and literally a PITA on the real deal!!
Tony - My old friend. It is always great to hear from you. All the best my friend and thanks for the comments
Bill - SOOOOOO Close. just a few more little items. Thanks for the peek.
Almost home with this one Mike, looking pretty sweet!
Excellent Excellent Excellent
Love that machine Mike
Man, that looks TOTALLY sweet, Mike. You never disappoint! What a great model! (That seat looks killer!)
Gino - Thanks for the peek, as for getting a model started, I understand the feeling of "so many models, so little time!".
Rob - Thanks, it is always fun to work with the "classics" but they are a bit of work. Then again we are "modelers"!
I like it. It is great to see that old kit done up right.
Looking awesome Mike. I really like the look of this one. I may have to start mine soon too.
After a couple of weeks of being busy, I was finally able to get back to the bench. After final assembly of all the major sub assemblies, I mounted the completed vehicle.
The track pads and road wheels were dusted with MIG Desert Sand pigment to finish the weathering. Here is a view of Karl’s favorite part of the M110…the crew seat. I added the chains used to hold the folding seat. Here is a view from the opposite side of the vehicle. Now to add some AM items, water cans, packs, section chest and then an AFV Camouflage net rolled then it will be finished. Hopefully I can get this build completed next week. As always if you have any comments, please feel free to drop in. Rounds Complete!!

Earl - Ahhh.. the small of a Battery TOT and the use of a GFT. Thanks... be well
Raual - The paint set makes things easy...all in one box....enjoy
Barrett - Same explanation as for Raual. As for Redleg....nothing to do with baseball... see the explaination here
www.abtryassoc.org/.../redlegs.html
As for me, this will give you an idea... www.redleg2scale.com/About.html
Thanks guys
Redleg, That is some exceptional work. Congratulations. And thanks for mentioning the MIG tool set paints. That's very helpful. I'm going to order a box today. Thanks for sharing the pics. Really nice! And I take it your chosen nom de guerre is a reference to the Cincinnati Reds?
Thanks for the link to tool set paint. I've always struggled with that
The noise and the smell of a Battalion Fire for Effect was awesome. I will never forget that, your build is so good that it looks like you took pictures of the real thing and then reduced them. Thanks again for bringing back those memories of the greatest gun that I ever gave fire directions to. Just my thoughts from an old horse soldier who did not use a computer to do the calculations.
Stay well my friend,
Bill - Thanks for the peek....and the kind words
Some very nice progress here Mike! Very cool work as usual on all the details.
Ernest - Thanks for comments. As for the MIG tool set paint, check this out

Whoa! That's a BIG gun!
Love everything about it Mike! You're really making this one come alive!
BTW, never heard of a Tool Paint set by MIG.....I'll have to look into that!

Earl - Thanks for the kind comments. Rather than being afraid, I would hope this build is inspiring you to the fullest potential. As for the noise, yep that is something you cannot describe....and lets not forget the smell!
Karl - Glad to see you back and I hope the new humble abode has everything you and the lovely lady need...enjoy. Thanks for the comments. I am having fun with this one. Not often I get to do chipping. As for the covers, I want to show it in the "ready to roll" look. Still have to mount it and get the spade on. Then add some more riding goodies. Going to add an AFV camo net rolled up...that should be fun
As always thanks guys
Terrific work, Mike!
After a busy move into the new house, I'm just getting time to model again, and it's a pleasure to come back and see the same model I had just finished but in such a completely different finish and look. I don't have to even tell you that you nailed it----fabulous, honestly! I love the dust cover on the barrel and sights.
This is fantastic! All that you need now is the noise that she makes when fired. Brings back a lot of memories. I'm afraid to start mine after seeing yours. Thanks for the memories.
Steve - Thanks for the kind words. LMAO as you answer Steve Distermasters ..... no one could ever confuse anyone with him or should I say..."THEM"!! LOL
Mike
As always you have scratched and painted and created another masterpiece.
For once my smart asterisk commitments are stilled.

1) Darn right (glad you can use my name-just don't sully it----I do that well enough myself
2) just enough (for a good time)

Steve - It is always a pleasure to have you stop by old friend... and with all your buddies. Thanks old friend. The armor bracelets are always fun!
Okay, another Steve here.......
.........how many Steves are on this forum anyway?
I haven't been checking in too often lately..... been very busy.
Been watching occasionally and like what 'ya doing Mike, especially those tracks.
For me, the tracks are "the BLING" of armor.
Thanks Duster and redleg.
I'm glad I only trained on m110's and didn't have to crew one.
SPLASH, OUT! Bob
13B - Glad you are enjoying the build and it has brought you back. Should have more for all of you to view this weekend.
Steve - Nice to see you!
r13b20 Excellent job so far! This thread caused me to rejoin the forums. Hi y'all.
Excellent job so far! This thread caused me to rejoin the forums. Hi y'all.
Hey back at you
Earl - Thanks....me too!
Looking good Mike, can't wait to see the final product.
Earl - Actually the show is the end of this week. Looking forward to it.
Hi Mike, how was the show? Wanted to attend but I had back problems again.
Gino - Thanks, looking forward to seeing you, it will be great to have mutual supporting fires at the show!
Looking great Mike. See you at AMPS.
Earl - Thanks
Fantastic! What more can I say?
Lee - Thanks for stopping by and for your comments.
Mike, your artillery just blows me away. Good job.
Lee
I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
Bill - As always, thanks!
Tracks, spade, and carriage, oh my! Nice update Mike, looking good.
Earl - Thanks for the comments, glad to have you along for the ride. Hope it make your ride that much easier.
I was always impressed with the accuracy of the M110A2. Especially hip shots , where you have nothing but terrain maps. Nothing came close to the accuracy of the M110. I am following your build closely, as I want to do mine next and I hope to do mine as acturately. as possible to yours. Have a great day Mike!
On the way over!!
Ernest - First thanks for the comments. As for the tracks, I used the AK product directly to the metal links. Works just fine. Since it is a solvent base, Mineral Spirits, based wash it works very well on the bare metal.
Hey Mike! Been away for a while and am getting caught up on things in the forums. Looks like I missed the start of another of your big guns, but after reading through the entire thread I've got to say you're doing a bang up job here! I really like the chipped paint effect with the AK product! I've got a bottle myself, but haven't used it yet. I also love the look of the tracks....question: did you apply the AK track wash directly to the metal Spade Ace links or did you prep the links first?
Gino - Thanks, nothing like the big boy! Modeling its swan song appearance is proving to be fun. I have done more scratching and chipping on this one build then all my years of modeling put together!
Looking awesome Mike. A great build of a great piece.
This week was finishing the rest of the assemblies with sand color and scratching. The gun carriage edge was painted with my rubber black mix as the gasket between the carriage and the hull. Next it was treated with the AK Scratch mix and then the ODS Sand color as previously discussed. Here is the view of the carriage after scratching.
Here is the other side of the carriage
Here is the recoil spade assembly also treated in the same method. The spade needs a bit more scratching considering the way it is used.
I painted the pads on the track with my rubber mix (50/50 Flat & NATO Black). Here are the tracks now ready for mounting.
That’s it for this week, now its time to begin assembling and adding details.
As always if you have any comments, please feel free to drop in.
Tony - My old friend, it is always good to hear from you. Thanks
You and the lovely lady keep your powder warm!
OH WOW Bro that's lookin killer
Karl - Thanks for stopping by. The worn effects works well. You do have to follow the directions. You need multiple coats, then apply the paint and as soon as the paint is dry, start scratching. You don't have to milk a can of Aqua Net, it is in a much small jar, and based on this build like hair spray, one jar should last a long while!
As for the 80s hair....I had buzz cuts in the 80s....now if we go back to the early 70s we are talking serious hair! LOL
Gamera - Thanks for stopping by and for the comment.
Very cool, the dinged up road wheels look fantastic!
Superb work, Mike! You KNOW that I"m loving the worn look!
What did you think of the "Worn Effects"? I tried it, and can't say that I thought it offered any advantage over hair spray---plus, you can't really get "80's hair" with it if you want.
Steve - You know I never do anything simple! Thanks
Sprue - Thanks
Very clean realism, REDLEG
Oh Good, You didn't go over board- just a simple build
SERIOUSLY: looks Super ! The road wheels and drive gears are outstanding
Earl - Thanks, so far what you have seen;
Eduard - Photo Etch Set for M110A2
Barrel Store - Metal Barrel for M110A2
Spade Ace - Metal Tracks for M110/M107 series
Verlinden - Vehicle Tool set
still to come
AFV - Sand camouflage net
MV Lenses for the headlight and BO light
Scratch build Aiming posts and ramming staffs
Scratch muzzle cover and covers for the pantel and gunners quadrant
Scratch decals for the drivers periscopes
Cast section chest
Still contemplating personal gear & MREs
That's what I have so far
Mike, Outstanding!! What aftermarket details did you use for your build? Don't mean that as a slur to your model building ability, it is just fantastic what you accomplish. You should write a book for us newcomers to get ideas and to learn how to give us help in our builds.
On the way over.
Mike, You're looking good with this. I have the same kit. I don't like the split barrel with the kit. Are you intending on using this barrel as supplied with the kit? The accuracy of the 8" M110 was incredible, I was sorry to hear that it is not in the Army arsenal any longer. Keep up the inspiration to make me try harder to do better on my model making!
On the way, over.
This week’s progress includes the tracks. Worked on them during the Super Bowl and finished up later this week. Here are 4 sets of 36 links. On side should have 74 or 75 links, thus two of these sets plus a couple of loose links, which will be added to fit. At 36 links it makes it easier to work with for finishing in my opinion.
Here is the last assemble, the gun upper carriage. The last few details and filling work completed. Here is a closer view. You can see my use of Archer surface details welding lines. Here is the recoil spade. It has been base painted with NATO Green and the AK Light Rust wash to give a rust bleed look near the bottom. That’s it for now. Next to finish the base coating and start some add on details. As always if you have any comments, please feel free to drop in. Rounds Complete!!

Earl - Thanks for the kind words. As for skills, we all learn more with every build, like EOD there is no expert. That is the great purpose of this forum to learn, teach and share. Just keep trying and building but most of all, enjoy and have fun. That is the key for the hobby.
You are definitely an inspiration. I don't know if I could ever get to be as good as you are, but you give me hope that I can improve with every model that I build. You must be very busy with the M110, I have the same kit and I am saving your build as a reference for building mine.
Earl - Almost everyone starts a stash. It is a hobby into itself. If you enjoy it....do it. Glad I am inspiring you..
Once again, this is great info and inspiration for when I start my own M110. Once again, good job!!
Armornut,
Little did I realize when I got back into this hobby after 50 years that I would be so impressed by the armor and battleship models that are available that I would start a "stash". Am I becoming obsessed by the need to purchase models and aftermarket details almost on a weekly basis? Am I losing my mind or is this common in this hobby? Whatever it is, I am enjoying it and the help that is quite apparent from the fine folks in the Forum.
Sounds good, Mike! I'll try to check in from the road when I get a decent internet connection! :)
Karl - I will be using a modified version of the hairspray on most of the model. The NATO Green is the undercoat and ODS Sand the top color. The ODS vehicles were painted in country with non military paint and so many vehicles BADLY chipped. On the blade I would have both rust and green colors showing through the sand. As always thanks for the help. Especially on one of the few times I can use "chipping"
Pawel - Always a pleasure to have you stop by the firing point.
Hello Mike!
Noticed your latest fire mission a bit late, but now I'm watching! Good luck with your build and have a nice day
Paweł
All comments and critique welcomed. Thanks for your honest opinions!

Mike, I'm always happy to help if I can!
Just a thought--if you've never tried the "Hair Spray" method, this spade would be a perfect candidate for a test-mule. Spray a dark brown, HS it, spray a second light rust over that and degrade it and weather it with some more rust straeaks and tonal variations. SEAL IT WELL, add more HS, spray your base colors and degrade that, showing the rust underneath. Then you can drybush and paint on your metallic chips and worn areas. Use enamel for your first rust color, acrylic for anything that would be on top of a HS layer. Seal whatever you degrade before going to the next step.
Good luck with it if you decide to go that route! It might be very cool?
Karl - Thanks for the help. The recoil spade is always a mess. It will have to be three shades with sand down to NATO Green and metal/rust in places. It will be fun.
Hey Mike, those recuperators look smokin'! The whole build is looking pretty good so far.
I recently took these great photos of a rusted blade if you need some inspiration for painting that blade!
Steve - Great to have you watching
Another build I have to watch-
redleg12 The different pistons for the equilibrators, recoil spade lifts and recoil pistons were base coated in black and then painted Alclad Dark Aluminum. As always if you have any comments, please feel free to drop in. Rounds Complete!!
The different pistons for the equilibrators, recoil spade lifts and recoil pistons were base coated in black and then painted Alclad Dark Aluminum.
Working on some more sub-assemblies, the first is the recoil spade. I still have to put on the spare tracks and will keep it separated until most of the painting is completed to make things easier.
Also assembled is the metal barrel to the slide section, also the muzzle brake on the barrel.
I also assembled all the road wheels. I painted them first with my rubber mix of 50/50 Flat and NATO Black. After the tire black dried, the rims were painted with NATO Green as the base color.
The hull assembly also received the base coat of NATO Green.
Time to assemble the tracks during the game. Enjoy
Armornut - No problem...you are never finished with the stash!!
Karl - Thanks for the peek, yea the seat back is a PITA. Have one $%&* already. Enjoy the road as best you can.
Where are you headed to Karl I live around 6 or 7 hours north of Detroit.
On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

Looking good so far, Mike! I'll try to follow, but I"m on the road now as of Thursday--next stop somewhere up in Detroit, I think? It's hard to follow stuff when you're on a bus most of the day. :)
I'll be impressed if you make it to the end of this build without breaking the back off that darned seat at the back! I must have broken that thing of half a dozen times before I made a new mount using brass pins!
Thanks Redleg, I knew ODS was a managerie of equipment new and old, but wow.I jusr told my wife my stash was complete, NUTS! LOL . I'll check in again?
we're modelers it's what we do
Lee - Always great to have you stop by. Glad you are learning something from my blogs... I will keep it coming.
Mike, I always take great pleasure following your builds and I also learn a lot. Keep it coming.
Earl - Nice to have you watching
Joe,
Do you have a photo of your completed M110? The one which I will be building will also have the type used during the "Cold War" in Europe.
Thanks,
I have this kit and I am saving it for the start and finish of my M577. I will be following your build of this 8" M110 closely to help in the building of my own.
Regards,
Gino - Thanks for the peek. Here is one of the few times we will get a chance to do the "German" thing.... chipping.... should be fun
Joe - The model is a nice kit and it great that you passed it on to an FO. Come along for the ride and you will see plenty of photos and info.
Josiah - Nice to have you along for the ride.
ooooh this is gonna be exciting, I'll be watching closely, everything looks great so far.
I just finished the same kit. It was my first Italeri kit, nice details throughout. I removed the muzzle brake and cut the barrel down to replicate the M110 used during Vietnam.
