Tiger I Zimmerit Question
Posted by KruppCake on Monday, July 15, 2024 9:57 AM

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on this forum. I used to be a huge fan of Armorama in the past. I am currently building a DML mid-version Tiger I (kit 6624) and was wondering whether the turret should have zimmerit behind the stowage bin or if that's something I need to sand off, as it's molded into the plastic.

Anyone know if Tigers that had zimmerit had it behind the stowage bins? (Yes, I found books and reference photos, but I couldn't come up with an accurate answer for this myself).

I also found a youtube walkaround of the Saumur Tiger with zimmerit there, but there is no guarantee it had a factory-installed stowage bin.

That's actually a damn good question. Was the Zimmerit applied before such fittings as stowage bins and other accessories were installed during production or afterwards?

Yes, I found numerous wartime photos in my references of zimmerit all the way around the back of the turret (if this is what you mean), and underneath and behind the stowage bin. It looks as if the zimmerit was applied completely around the turret prior to installing the stowage bin. This was only made obvious by close-up photos showing the stowage bin removed or destroyed.

On the other hand, if your question meant to ask if there was zimmerit applied to the back of the stowage bin itself, I found no evidence of this in any of the photographs I looked at so far. I think the stowage bin was too flimsy to bother applying zimmerit.

Hope this helps.
