*UPDATED* HeloMiniatures commissioned Tamiya Hetzer WIP
Posted by the doog on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 11:00 PM

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let ya in on the commissioned build I'm doing for Helo Miniatures for their Hetzer panzer crew box art. It's shown here in a hard-edged camo scheme masked with silly putty. I was going to do that "ambush" scheme you see everywhere but we (the H.M. guy and I) decided against it for exactly that reason--it seems like its everywhere, so we wanted something different.

In the pics here I just got it together with the tracks and skirts, and laid a quick, preliminary light wash of raw umber on it, with a light drybrushing of tan/dust. Now the real fun begins of puttng down "layers" of weathering...In the overhead shot yuu can see into the hull where I drilled a hole to allow a threaded nut to go up into it and secure it to a car display case for shipping.

I found the Tamiya Hetzer a delightful build; a couple annoying sink marks, but pretty good kit. I really think it could have greatly benefitted with a rudimentary amount of PE, like DML's. What you see is 100% strictly OOB.  The fit if the rear fenders was a little vague; be careful in lining them up correctly with their marks--i.e., read the directions first! Whistling [:-^]Laugh [(-D]

Well it ain't my DML Hetzer's rival yet , but its getting there! Lots of little details aren't painted at all yet--even the muffler is unpainted as of yet. The hatches are off as of yet; the rear one is off so that the figure can be inserted. Go ahead, let me have it!?...Big Smile [:D]

I agree with you Doog. The Tamiya kit does lack some PE and that might have been nice. However, I appreciate the pre-sag link-and-lengths track, as well as the finished wheels (Dragon's only have one-side completed)

Looking sharp so far. After seeing your DML build, there is no way I'll pan this guy. Big Smile [:D]

Just out of curiosity, what paint brand and type do you use for the drybrushing...?

Your drybrushing looks great.  As does the rest of the model.

Thanks guys!

I used a craftstore paint: "Folk Art #420--'Linen'". You cabn find it at big craft store chains like Michael's and A.C.Moore.

This is used mainly just as a first layer--most of it will be obscured by the subsequent weathering, but every litle bit of layering helps to convey a depth of weathering.

Looks great so far, I like that camo scheme. Mind if I ask what type of payment you finally worked out with the HeloMiniature people?

Beautiful Hetzer Doog, but I think I agree that it doesn't rival your Hetzer build. Photo etch would be a nice touch but I can see the point of a box build, if they were trying to keep in a budget. Still would have been nice for them to load it up for you for the fun value!

Again, congrats on getting commissioned to build for Helo Miniatures, it was well deserved. And keep the updates coming.

doog, I actually like this one better than your other one, seriously...you nailed that "hetzer" scheme that is difficult to reproduce (thanks you for not going ambush---lol)...only minor thing I see is a little overspray/soft-edge on some of the hard-edge demarcation lines, but if you put any more filters (or oil dots) on it you should be able to blend those out...5 stars, dude...

Thanks for those sharp eyes, Manny! I'll try to see if I can sharpen those up a bit! Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks to Joe, Dale, Rick, and hunter as well--I appreciate you taking the time to comment!

Am i the only one here who thinks they wish they could produce something as good as it is so far. Knowing what else you probably have planned, this Hetz is going to outshine this chappies figures.

Looks great, my only criticism would be that the camo colors are too dark, which is completely irrelevant since I know you have to make them really stand out now so they still show up through weathering.  What did you mask with?

Thanks guys!

Yeah I know what you're saying Ian; I thought that too at first, about it being too dark, but I think that it's a trick of the light--I think that the fact that it's covered about 90% in a dark green makes it look dark in the photo. I DID lighten the DY as I always do, and did an overspray with lightened Pz green over the green coat; maybe the dark wash tinted it so...anyhoo, it's since been washed in a light tan wash, which has definitely lightened up the overall tint. I'm actually glad now that I DIDN'T go even lighter on it. Punk...Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D] LOL!!!

I used Silly Putty to mask it. I roll it out onto my cutting matt, flatten it, and then actually cut out the shapes I want with an Exacto blade, and pick them off the matt with a straight edge razor...works like a charm!  Tongue [:P]

I'm not sure when the figs wll be coming out-he guy is actually sculpting them as I'm working on this. We IM each other progress photos; the one dude is in a sweater and camo pants I think; I haven't seen the other dude yet...but I'll let you know any info.

Thanks again all!

looking good Doog i also like the camo and the dark colors (sorry Ian heh) and i do agree this is a very simple kit but i suspect it seems much more simple to you because the last one you did had all the extra interior and such, the fun part is still to come with the weathering.

No respect, no respect at all! Big Smile [:D]  One little question...roughly how much silly putty does it take to mask somehing like this?  The nearest craft store sells them in little plastic "eggs".

HA hA! No problem Ian! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] One "egg" will serve up your Hetzer just fine. Serve with toast and a light wine...(if you can sneak it by the parents!) Laugh [(-D]

Hey thanks, too,  Ron and Jagdpanther and Steve! Big Smile [:D] I'll have some more "weathered" photos later on tonight after I get home from the little lady's house! Tongue [:P]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Well here's a few updated photos:

I got the "dots" done, and the muffler painted; also got the pin washes finished; still have to "chip" it...it's gittin' DIRRRRRRTY now! Yeah!

I should have it done this weekend--all I need after the chipping is some pastels and then....THEN!.....Sigh [sigh]...I have to say "bye bye"!!! Boohoo [BH] WAAAAHHHH! I don't wanna give up my new Hetzerrrrrrr!!! Laugh [(-D] LOL!!

Hope ya all find it favorable! (sorry Manny--I just COULDN'T leave it "clean"!! Wink [;)]) Do ya think it'll sell some figures?!

doog, I just got caught up on this post...what can I say?Wow!! [wow]   Another great build dude!Thumbs Up [tup]  I just don't know how you guys can do the weathering so fast.  It takes me 2 weeks just to do a rudimentary weathering job...Sigh [sigh].  Looking forward to the completion of this one Herr Doogster!

BTW, gotta give my thanks to you for showing us the packing sponge chipping method in your last Hetzer WIP post!  I started using it and its awesome!

When finished, this will be a showstopper for sure.  Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup]Make a Toast [#toast]

I love your methods, especially the dot method.  I have yet to try the chipping method because I was aiming for a lightly weathered tank but I think the dot method brought some life into my not-the-best build.

I'm not as sure about this one, it looks too...I dunno, too dark or something. I'm like everyone else in that I'm in awe of your weathering, but for some reason this one...maybe it's just still wet?
