Scott, I thought you moved to the North Pole. Glad to finally have you aboard.

Yes Ryan, that is a unique scheme, can't say I've ever seen it before. This will be challenging.

Here's a good example of the disc-pattern.

All this discussion about the Jagdpanzer is making me keener to follow up my 1:72 Su-100 build with a 1:72 Jagdpanzer...

Tempting....

That's what happens Mike, people share their builds and it does spike interest. I've always liked them, but they seem to be overshadowed primarily by StuGs. The thing I dread is the wheels and tracks. Yuck [yuck]

My Johann Huber kit comes with PE schurzen and an aluminum barrel. This build will keep me busy!

Eric, thanks for that photo of the Jagdpanzer with the disc pattern!  Very interesting....someone said use a circle template to do that?  Looks difficultConfused [%-)]!!

Hermes, thanks also for the photos and color schemes.  I just noticed that the scheme on the Italeri box seems to be a disc pattern!!  I must be Blindfold [X-)]!!

Fortunately there's some time before I have to worry about a paint scheme...at the worst I can go straight dunkelgelb like this one I saw at the 2007 IPMS Nats:

Don't know who did it, but it sure is nice!

Maybe we should rename this to a Jagdpanzer build. Tongue [:P]

Ernest I forgot to comment on your build. I can't attest to the accuracy, but I built a StuG IV many moons ago and I recall no problems at all. I'm sure there will be the usual tube of putty that is required on most Italeri builds.

As for the disc-pattern, I was thinking maybe you could punch holes in an index-card. I don't know if there is an easier way.

Thanks for the heads up Eric!  BTW, is that Jagdpanzer IV with the disc pattern yours??  If so, NICE job!!

I've been checking out the kit and the detail definitely is a little soft when compared to the recent Dragon kits I've been building.  I guess I should expect a lot of mold seams and gaps...normal with older Italeri kits!!

Here's how you would paint the disc pattern:

Start by painting your normal 3-color camo. Then you'll need to cut/punch three or four different sizes of discs, from about 2mm to 4mm in diameter. Next you need to cover each camouflage color seperately (and one at a time) with the discs, so they are all touching edges and cover at least 90% of the surface. Finally you spray your second color (brown on yellow, yellow on green, etc.) and then remove the disc masks. You should have a fairly random pattern (and while the model tigerman posted is quite nice, the repetitive bow-tie pattern isn't exactly correct - it looks like only one size of disc was used).

Some prefer to draw the circles on index cards and then cut out the areas between the discs. Personally I find this much harder, and it does not produce the results of the first method, resulting in a repeating pattern which is not good.

You can attach the individual discs with a small dot of vaseline, which will hold them on for painting but can be removed easily. I'd also recommend that you use index card or a similar weight material and not masking tape, because it's much harder to punch a crisp edge in tape.

Hey, wait a minute, just because you guys get to talk about all your camo configurations doesn't mean you get to kick us Hellcats to the curb. I'm thinking of doing mine in a nice OD green, with some subtle hints of fading. And if I get crazy enough I might even throw some white wash on it.

that's right!  O! D! O! D! O! D!

I finally opened the jackson kit... boy i should not have let the tamiya kits i recently worked on blind my expectation of how simple the jackson could be.  There are a crap load of parts thanks to the interior. The number is more than enough to match a new dragon kit (not counting the indy tracks.  that's cheating!)  This is gonna be a lonnng build.

Four months for this build ...

I'd really like to have something to show for this when it's finished.

IDEALLY, I would like to be able to say that I'd completed the following:

  • Fujimi 1:76 PzJg I
  • Dragon 1:35 Elefant
  • Italery 1:72 Hetzer
  • Tamiya 1:35 SU-85

That's a reasonably-ambitious 1 model per month, which probably won't happen. At the very least, I should get the first two done, though.

2 weeks to go ... Headphones [{(-_-)}]

Yeah Bob, where did everyone go? (cricket's chirp)

I just ordered some Archer numbers for my Japgpanzer. That will be the only AM I ad, unless I throw the tracks to the wall and go one-piece.

I think that we're all biding our time, trying to wrap up some other GB's so's that we can dive in feet first to this one the day it begins...and on a Friday, to boot! I see at least one build being completed by the end of the first weekend! Big Smile [:D]

I'm working on finishing the M18 for Winter Warriors this coming week (hopefully) so I can get started right away, too. I have the (somewhat extensive) Voyager PE set and Fruil tracks all ready to goWhistling [:-^]

I've been working on an AMT 1934 ford kit lately to get my confidence up before this build.  Nothing says quick and easy like AMT, especially after two DMLs and a Tamiya in a row.  Sign - With Stupid [#wstupid]

You must have had better luck than I. There is a reason I don't build autos.

I think you just need to lock yourself in your office/basement/mancave for the whole weekend and bang one full kit out. Tell the fam you're...uhhh..."reorganizing the monthly finances" or something, and voila! You have experienced the joy of marathon modeling! Laugh [(-D]

Hah, indy tracks alone take me a week!

To bide the time between now and the GB, I've started a Tamiya Cromwell. I thought i could get it built in a couple of days, but we all get sidetracked.

I'll be lucky if I can start mine in April, let alone Feb!!  I've got FOUR other GBs to finish first!!Propeller [8-]

I wish I could just lock myself in the mancave.....too many reponsibilities though  Sigh [sigh]

Hey Eric, what kind of markings did you get?  Are they for your Dragon Jagdpanzer IV?

Yes, they are the white-outlined ones that are fairly common. I bought the kit from a friend, sans decals. I already have some Archer crosses. My goal this year is to get many more Archers and less kits.

Bah, straight OOB and these things are easy as pie.  As long as you don't get in a tizzy about superdetailing the engine or anything, there's just 35 or so pieces to glue and paint.

And no camo to paint.  Tongue [:P]

Though I do want to beat it up a little and try some of that rusting stuff from Michael's on this cheap model before trying it on one of my prized armor models.

It's called Sophisticated Finishes.  From my understanding it comes in two parts, an Iron paint base and a rust finisher.

I haven't picked it up yet but I hope to on Monday.

Do you have an example of someones work using this stuff? I have a Michaels near me, so it might be worth looking into.

I know somebody around here posted a pic of it used on a Pz IV muffler which gave me the idea within the last week or two.  I'll be darned if I can find that thread though.

There is an example on the Michael's site here.  Not the greatest example, but it gives a general idea.

I also found a review on Armorama here.

I am leaning towards a Sd.Kfz. 251/22. I plan on using some PE on it and Archer Fine Transfers. Plus some aftermarket rounds. That is unless I can find my JagdTiger, or buy a new one. My JagdTiger was the old kit, so I will buy the newer DML release. With PE, after market barrel, and mantlet.
