I finally finished the Beetle. 16 months, I think that is a new slow record for me.

Most importantly, thank you to all of you who rooted me on and gave me so much advice and info.

What I learned: Vehicles done right are harder than I'd thought. My hat is off to all of you who make your vehicles look so great.

I am looking forward to trying another vehicle and hopefully be able to apply some of the advice I got after my mistakes. Thanks again.

Greg, your timing is as impeccable as your work. I saw on the news the other day that VW is closing out its last production of its last version of the Beetle. The end of a long line.

Yours makes a splendid 'farewell salute' to the Bug!

Hope you do another vehicle soon. There are lots of fun ones out there!

Greg

You win...looks as if one could just climb in and start it up! It's been fun following the build; I'm looking forward to your next one(s).

Greg. Well Done. It looks like a VW. I have to admit thet when I look at all the muscle cars being built (most so Very Well) It"s good to see a nice unassuming car, looking for all the world like one you could see in someones driveway.

p.s. I took notes of your mistakes   -er- "learning experances" so I can apply them to my current project.

I saw that too, Greg, and it made me sad. When out and about my wife doesn't understand why, when I see a VW Beetle, I almost always stop and gawk a little.

Thanks so much for your kind words.

Mike, thanks so much. And for following along.

Thanks a lot, Nick. Seeing some of your cars inspired me to give this a go. And something to aspire towards.

Steve, it makes me happy when somebody can learn something from my goof-ups. I think that a big reason to post WIP's. Thanks for that!!!

And for your kind words.

Magnifico, my good friend! You have done the iconic Beetle justice. Very wonderfully done. And congrats on pulling it through to it's conclusion. You should be very proud of the fine work you have done.

Given the news of the end of the production of the Beetle, when I stop by our yard full of them, I certainly give reflection on an illustrious and rewarding journey of a trully historic car.

I look forward to your next project Greg.

Cheers, Joe

Thank you, Steve. Your use of German is clever, and yep, I had to use Translate just to make sure you didn't call me a name or something. Stick out tongue

Mach71, I do appreciate your taking the time to comment. Thank you.

Good question. Because I didn't notice the whitewall decals until finishing-touch time, and having never applied decals to the rubbery model tires (or at least no remembering same), to do it right I would have wanted to do it prior to mounting the tires and attachng the wheel assemblies to the chassis.

I actually regret it, I think they would have looked cool. You are right.

Greg, a great looking Beetle!  I built the same model in blue and then I lost the trailer hitch.  I found the hitch a month later under the bench in a box that I rarely look into and there it was!  I thought the hitch went into the trash by accident.  When I had finished my Beetle the rear suspension was raised and I thought that it was for the trailer hitch.  Yours is raised as well.

Well done. Most kits look, in some way, not real. They may be very well built but somewhere there is something that tips one off that the item your looking at is not the real thing. This VW is an exception to that generality. Your kit looks spot on to the real deal. When I look at it I see a car sitting in a studio having its picture taken. Again, very well done on the realism factor.

MrMike, I surely do remember admiring your blue bug. You did a fine job and was an inspiration. Among other things, you sure did a better job with those side stripes than I did!

I also noticed the raised rear end during the build. It bothered me then and it bothers me still, but I don't have the skills to raise and lower suspensions. Yet, anyway. Interesting you noticed it too. I settled on what you said, figured it was for the trailer hitch and accepted it.

Brandon, you are too kind. Thank you very much. In person, my bug looks pretty good from 3 or 4 feet, closer, with a good set of eyes, the whole 'first model car in a long time' thing starts showing. Surprise

The raised rear suspension on the Beetle is for the benefit of the trailer hitch.  Just like on a 1:1 car, the rear suspension is raised to help level the trailer and to allow for extra towing capacity for the vehicle.
