Been out of the loop for a few weeks on forums but am glad that I came back in time to see this. For a 2nd car build ever this came out GREAT!! Details and paint came out really good and I'm sure that your son is very happy with this. Just a beautiful build all around. Yes

AND SHE'S DONE!

This is for my middle son, his dream car. We have a local car show in Sharonville Ohio which is held right downtown. So I printed up a pic of the local hardware store and then painted up a base to match the street parking against the sidewalks.

Here is my Z-28 in all her beauty and needing a little makeup in a few places. I love the paint of course, the engine as well, the cracks in the glass not so much.

One of my favorites!

I made a simple set of hood hinges. In the end some 45deg styrene triangles worked well for what I needed.

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list, we're down to that Tamiya P-38F/G to use the other nose art Exito Decal (in-flight for this one), & in keeping with MC's hydra theory I bought another F-5E to do in FROG camo! And I just got a Trumpeter 1/32 F/A-18F!

That green is fantastic! That shade of green would be perfect for the '70 1/2 Baldwin Camaro kit I have in my stash. If you don't mind me asking, what is the name of that green color shade? I need to order that color.

Brilliant and gorgeous finish!! Bravo !!!!!

Dooey how can I say no after that glowing review Wow

keavdog Thanks so much!

I'm still working on those stripes making sure they lay down nice. I have a simple idea now for the hood hinge so hopefully i can find time tofinish that last step this weekend.

Getting close to finished. Decals and the base to do, plus a custom hood hinge since the kit came with none.
my assembly technique needs work. I struggled to get the body over frame, then realized i left the firewall out, Oops. Plus some more car experience must be necessary as both windshield and rear glass cracked on me while installing it. I think it was from pressing in the middle of the glass when i applied the ca. I didn't press hard, just enough to hold it in place but obviously it was to hard. Is what it is tho.

Thanks Mongoose! I just wanted to make sure this old farts mind hadn't slipped further than I thought it had.

Getting old is really a pain, literally or should I say lots of pains? Wink And some people say that these are our golden years. I think those people are color blind.

Thanks guys! Keavdog that thread was super interesting. I ended scrolling thru the whole thing.

Jim they've got a 2.9L turbo coming out. That seems pretty typical lately. Maybe even getting to the party lte as many others have one. The mustang has that little eco boost twin turbo that kills!

Very nice work! Toast Love the engine. At first glance it almost looks like the 348 that came in my '60 Chevy.

My memory is slipping a little but i either heard or read somewhere that the new HP camaro is loosing the V8s in favor of a special dual supercharged inline 6. Anybody hear anything about that? Years ago we took a 6 out of a buddys camaro and put a 283 in. I guess times have changed.

Interesting idea here (starting with the second comment)

http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/3561-making-door-hood-hinges/page/2/

There are PE hood hinges as well, not sure if they are fixed open or functioning though and a company called Decalcas makes a couple hinges, but not cheap and mostly in europe...

Does the firewall have cutouts for hinges?  May be able to lift a set from a different kit

Thanks,

John

Hey guys I need some help… There are no hood struts. I want to have the hood up but I don't have any other cars to pull parts from. Anyone have a good idea how I can make the hood struts to hold it up?

That was some good advice there oldermodelguy! I watched the videos and read the MCW guidelines. I thinned it Like you said, ended up about 55:45 and i added the MCW hardener at 8:1. I have mr color leveling thinner readily available and it was on the recommended list as well so made use of it.  These enamels spray super! I'm definitely a convert for anything that needs a shine.
This covered the black in those 4 light coats right off the bat. Then I went back and put the wet coat on it - I did 2 To avoid any striping risk.

Wow i like the way this looks. If I spend more time on body prep and wet sanding the primer coat I'll really show some good results.

Made myself a covered paint booth ;-)

now to wait about 4hrs before I touch anything. Off to do some Christmas decorating.

Engine looks great, just one thing, air cleaner should be gloss black on a factory stock build.

Thanks Tom! Watched a bunch of videos this morning. The rest of the day tho spent decorating Balloons

I did get a pic of the engine after the pva glue dried over the distributor.

Your engine & chasis work look really good.  Good luck with the gloss coat on the body.  Your son is going to love it!

MCW paint is airbrush ready, you shouldn't need to reduce it. Great color by the way.

awesome oldermodelguy! Well worth watching. I caught a few of his other videos on how to airbrush using this methid. I'll start with your recommendation later today and spray some spoons to start getting the technique down. Looking forward to this big time. If I get any kind of gloss like he shows this car is gonna be incredible.

Thinning should be right around the 55/45 mark paint to thinner blend. 4 coats in close succession, the later coats deliberately slower passes and wetter than the first. But test first and adjust from there, some colors are naturally more dense than others thus there can be some variation in ratio, from 60/40 to 45/55.  For enamels I have a couple of different blends of thinner I make up, both either are or have hardware store lacquer thinner in them. A high flow combo is 50/50 lacquer thinner and HWS paint thinner, then cut the paint with that as I stated above. Often LT alone is the right thing. I also do a combo of odorless mineral spirits and paint thinner. Air pressure by the way around 30 psi has been my way but I get a pretty good drop in my lines with the Paasche H and #3 needle, probably close to 4 psi but I get continuous flow after the drop.

I haven't specifically shot the MCW enamel but those blends have worked in every other enamel I have ever shot. And I know that some folks have shot the MCW the same way. Donn Yost has a video of shooting their enamels, MCW sent him first a sampling of the lacquer and later the enamel, he shot a whole video on each one if you can find those on you tube ( I'll link the enamel one if I run into it later today).

Pretty sure this is the enamel vid: https://youtu.be/TvIDaIAXnkQ

Looking good Mongoose. A car is a nice change of pace for a military modeler isn't it?

So nice to be able to paint the exterior first.   So nice to switch from Olive Drab to Plum Crazy...

Here's a new one for me, a car Yeah. Only my 2nd since i was about 14. I wanted to get my older son something unique for his birthday, what better than his dream car Right! Too bad it's not 1:1 scale.

iv gotten started cleaning up parts, priming, and even got some color on the engine and exhaust tonight. I'm really hesitant about the paint job. I'm trying out MCW's new line of enamel paints...and I haven't sprayed anything but flats on aircraft and then only a few times at most. Any suggestions welcome Idea

Practice on a paint mule or spoons to get the right paint/thinner proportions.  I have a few MCW paints but haven't used them yet (future projects) but I hear great things.  For glossy finishes do a couple light coats follwed by a heavy wet coat - just before running (takes practice to know where that point is).

Thanks,

John
