Chevelle Family builds
Posted by jimbot58 on Saturday, May 4, 2024 2:51 PM

As I mentioned in my previous post. I love Chevelles! So I have decided it was time to post photos

First is my Revelle 1969. I actually had a version of this, but was not an SS version, but a Malibu version with a 307 200 HP "Turbo Fire" engine and a 2 speed Powerglide transmission. It was pretty doggie. Plus I discovered the previous owner had wrecked it and left most of the bolts out of the front end. You could see the whole front clip bounce up and down as you drove it. It made for a great first date one night when the battery tray  came came loose, dropping the battery into the fan and cutting the cable! No running out of gas story for me!

This one I did straight OOB and did not add details such as ignigtion wires. I regrete that. The body is inly test fitted on the chassis for now. Still have to add the glass. door hardware, etc. It is the same color as the "my Grandma's Malibu" mentioned above

Another of my builds (there are many) is Revelle's 1968 SS 396. Both of thse kits are done very well by Revell in my opinion.

This kit I have been working longer on and I have been trying to match the '68 I owned. I don't have any reference photos to go by from my car, so I had to go by memory and online references. It was supposed to be Rally Red, which I got some from MCW finishes. I found it to be a little too orange. I opted Testor's Gloss Dark Red. A bit too dark, but I just want it to look ok. Wires, heater hoses and battery cables added. The kit came with some decent decals for the dash. All the chrome trim is hand painted  and masked with Alclad because I can't play very well with Bare Metal Foil. Also one of those Chrome pens I can't think of the brand, and a silver Sharpie as well!

Can't beleive how those tiny specks of dust show up on the black!

There are 3 more '68's in my stash but they are only in begining stages. I plan an all white build, a full black and perhaps a metalic all red one.

Lots to do when I retire!

Looking forward to seeing the rest of those builds if you keep doing the same level of great work. Beer

Sat here yesterday looking at the AMT 1970 454 kit and looked at the body which needs a lot of clean-up and filling and other prepwork. Hours later, even though I don't plan on starting this kit yet, it's cleaned and primed! (this is the pre photo, not the cleaned up version)

A mishap in the Chevelle family tonight!

I was trying to repair a plastic door tray from my fridge whick was cracked. I had it in ths workroom trying to repair it with the strongest solvent cement I have which is MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) which some people use as an alternative to model cement in little bottles.

Any way, while trying manuver the fridge part aroud, I knocked over the small bottle of MEK which I had filled from the quart can, and of course it went right for the hood of the Revell '67 Chevelle I had sitting nearby. I quickly grabbed it and shook off the liquid before it had done much damage.

There are finger prints that are hard to see in the photo, but I should be able sand and polish out once the MEK is fully cured. Could have been worse, it could have been fully finished.

Aha!

Another disaster bailed out from the destructive clutches of METHYL ETHYL KETONE !! Now hear this! My MEK Bottle is in a 3" by3" square of wood on my desk at all times. This does NOT garauntee an accident won't happen. It just lessens the chances. Good Save My Friend!

I did this with my bottles of decal solutions after a disaster involving these tall skinny bottles that are easy to knock over and a full set of decals for an SR-71 blackbird. I was able to find a replacement set though. The wells are for the caps which I pour a small amount into for working.
