Ole Yeller

Next up in the queue,  Bob Hoover's P-51 mount 'Ole Yeller'.  And once again the Airfix 1:72 Mustang.  De-miled by sanding off the gun fairings and filled the shell ports.

Photos seemed to show that Ole Yeller was finished in a Cadmium Yellow,  different from the Chrome Yellow seen on Hoover's later Rockwell-tagged Mustangs.  Painted with Vallejo Model Color Flat Yellow, thinned for an airbrush.   I polished the paint with an old T-shirt to knock down the flat.

The decals are by Draw.   They recommend that they be applied over a gloss surface.  My polishing technique didn't quite fill the bill and the carrier film is apparent on the large lettering on the wings.   Solvaset didn't quite settle them in.  Draw did provide some spare green color patches to fix the striped area on the nose.  They came in handy filling in for the nose decal that didn't wrap smoothly

Added a couple of underwing antennas using 0.006 stainless wire.

And to answer K dogs prior question, No I'm not doing soley racers.  More aircraft in private hands.   I have Gen Anders' (USAF retired & ex astronaut) ValHalla decal sheet.  While done in USAF Iceland air defense marks, it does carry a N-number.   I'm dissatisfied with my Arctic Red paint over the Alclad aluminum.   I need to strip the red & repaint.   My next Draw Decal order will include the National Health Service Spitfire markings and several other non-military items.

These Airfix P-51 kits are nice.  I pick them up for 10 bucks at Hobby Lobby (six bucks when model kits are on sale).  Pair them with some unique decals (most of the Draw sets are 6 to 8 bucks) and you get a week of modeling pleasure and a neat product for not a lot of pocket money.
