Bandai 1/72 Star Wars Y-Wing
Posted by Archimedes on Thursday, December 24, 2020 11:42 AM

Hi All!

The fighter is obviously the Bandai 1/72 Y-Wing.  The ground crew comes from the 1/72 Hasegawa set, and the airfield is the 1/48 resin tarmac from True Details.  The trees come from various train set terrain kits.  Paints were Citadel acrylics.

The build itself was pretty crazy.  The parts on this ship (mainly small piping) was very accurate and as a result... a ton of pieces.  This thing looks like all the controls are hydraulic!  As usual with Bandai kits, the tooling was impeccable, and the fits extremely good.  There were only a few minor cases where I needed to fill or sand.  Even with helpful and detailed instructions, it was still a pain to fit all those pipes.  They are very fragile, and in a few cases had to be repaired after they snapped.

Tarmac was painted light gray and then misted with a combination of tan and flat black.  You can find a description of that technique that another user helped me with on the "Diaramas" board.

The decals were interesting.  Only about half of them were large enough that you could even tell what they were.  The others were basically just "dots" that were easier to paint or marker on.  I did print out a custom set of decals for R2 and R5, but they proved more work than they seemed to be worth, so I abandoned them after a few failed attempts at application.

Thanks for looking!

Ah, the Y-wing!  The TBD-1 of the "Star Wars" 'verse!  Excellent finish!

Yeah, probably easier just to paint the markings Wink

Oh cool!!! Love the Y-wing and the base looks good!!! Nice work!

Although I always thought of the Y-wing as sorta the P-40 or Hurricane of the SW universe- guess TBD-1 works too though!

When I first saw "Star Wars" when it came out, I recognized the attack on the Death Star as a retelling of the traditional version of the Battle of Midway-the "Incredible Victory" version, the "five fateful minutes" story.  And the Y-wings were Torpedo Eight, drawing the Zeroes off for the X-wings to swoop in and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Ahhh I see your point. I always thought of the Y-wing as the old reliable fighter-bomber that got ignored while the newer shiny X-wings got all the credit.
