Its a slow system adding all those little bits and trying to keep it looking random. I keep finding a spot here or there to work on a little more. I am however going to the store to pick up some paint today so I'll be ready to tackle that.

As for the tug Woody its waiting for nacelle caps. I keep looking for something to make them from but will most likely just have to turn them.

Ok here are a couple of detail pics...hope this will stay the hungy wolves Whistling [:-^]

This is a test on the bridge windows, I realized I need a better camera as its a little fuzzy:

Heres a look at the hull bottom and some of the detail added to the sheild generator:

And a look down the topside trench (lots of goodies here):

And a quick explanation of some of the delays. Heres a look at the project holding area of my bench (excuse the mess) there are six projects waiting for me Grumpy [|(]

If a clone of a cat cost $50,000 I wonder how much it would cost to clone me...wow then I could get some stuff done:

I was thinking more of a metalized gray not so much a full on metalic. Kinda like the touch of silver to the white on starships.

I agree. No metallics. The Star Destroyers are white with a drop of light grey. I'd use very light greys and very light blues to add some difference between the panels, but metallics would just look wrong.

i wouldn't use any metallic paint, Matt.

At that scale, metallic will look fake on all of that awsome work you have done.

Stalling...and hit a brick wall. So I need to work out some minor details and I'll be back at it. If anyone has any input on what they think the over all color of this thing should be let me know. I was thinking about a mid range metalic grey over a darker blue grey. Some of the CGI's out there look preaty good that way.

Thanks. I have thought about kitting this but I would have to build a new master for most of the hull as I went over board on the detail and have a little to much under-cut for the RTV to handle. It wouldn't take much to do it I'm just not sure there would be enough interest in this to justify molds. It wouldn't be cheap thats for sure.

for anyone not wanting to read an answer probably in the middle of the thread,
Interdictor cruisers, were a form of star destroyer class, just a bit smaller(ok a lota bit), with less armament, but those huge balls, are for making artificial gravity wells to trap starships from making hyperspace jumps, thus rendering them capturable, or defeatable by the empire.

Sorry about the pics guys. Our computer forgot who it was. It all started with it misplacing its display driver so I was left with 16 color display ( yes 16 color not 16 bit) and none of the web software could open. Banged Head [banghead]

With no other option we had to do a full system restore. Once all the software is loaded up again I promise I'll get those pics up Big Smile [:D]

The good thing is all I lost was a couple of programs and none of my build pages or files. FYI if you load super smart pc games in your computer do not leave them unattended...they do very bad things.

I mount the bulbs to ABS plastic (it takes heat better than styrene) just in case and then glue the mount where I want. The grain of wheat bulbs don't give off a lot of heat but I figure better safe than sorry. Tongue [:P]

Nothing like sitting there admiring your work all the while a crater is forming in the surface of your build. Trust me I speak from experience. Wink [;)]

the problem I have with my lighting plans is how much wire to use and what gauge and what type of power source to use . I could always use a lantern battery. and I definitely know that if I am going to light the Bussard scoops I will have to open up that bulkhead behind the scoops but leave enough plastic to attach the clear parts to. BTW are Grain of wheat bulbs hot enough to melt the plastic ?

Oh most definitly Mike! The plan is to paint the outside of the Interdictor in a flat black primer rather than gray. The inside will actualy get a self adhesive silver reflective sheet where needed to increase the lighting effect.
You'll have to let us know how the lighting goes on the NX-01. After I bought mine I could'nt help but think of lighting it.

well as it so happens I have over 20 Grain of Wheat bulbs 10 of the regular 10 of the regular with the black base and sticky adhesive backing, 6 or 7 colored lights and a couple of 2" bulbs (since I amg going to try to light the Enterprise NX-01 those two bulbs will be going into the warp nacel).

Maxx whatever you do dont paint the interior ( where the lights are going) black sure it will keep light from seeping out but it will also absorb more of the light that you want to show through the windows. Spraying the interior chrome silver will have the same effect of preventing light seepage but it will also provide you with a medium to reflect light enhancing the light output (sort of like the reflector in a flashlight) and you would use less Grain of Wheat bulbs.

Nothing new yet. I had some complications with lighting the hull (due to its construction) for the windows so I decided to go with grain of wheat bulbs rather than fiber optics in some areas. The next phase once the lighting is done will be to spray the whole thing black to prevent any light leaks. I'll try to get a pic of how the bridge section will look lit. Thanks again for all the intrest in this build, its been a long haul but I'm almost there.

probably resistors so that you wont ruin the lights. if the barrels have thin colored bands they are resistors, if not probably capacitators. if they have three thingies coming out of them they are transistors

I thought I would share the status of the Interdictor at this point sence you have been waiting so long for me to get things straight on the lighting Whistling [:-^]

. Here is a front and bottom view of the beast.

Once I get the resistors figured out for the LEDs I will be on my way to the finish line. This is some what new to me to be working with this much lighting on one kit so I want to be sure before its all closed up and I cross the point of no return. I plan on posting the lighting plan so if anyone decides to build one of these or a Star Destroyer (with lights) it won't be such a nightmare.

After seeing Empire I bought a "making of mag". It had the full size Falcon mock-up and it's construction. I thought that someday I'd love to build a 1:1 scale version of my own.

Studio scale hummm. That would be a three foot model. You know the funny thing is that it really wouldn't be much more work, just more plastic. Besides I have to keep room set aside for the 75" Exicutor. Laugh [(-D]

WOW! Once again I want to thank you all for the positive and enthusiastic feedback. There have been a couple of times while chopping up thousands of tiny bits of styrene that I wanted to shelf this one for awhile but you guys have kept me excited about the final out come. There where a couple of questions about how I would build the side trenches. Here are the highs and lows of building trenches.

This is the 5/16" I-beam before detailing.

This space was built up with .040 strips cut to fit inside and make the high and low surface of the trence.

Once detailed it gives lots of surface for light to play with.

You might try looking at one of those dollar stores. That is were I bought a sack full of Christmas decorations that were nothing more than colored diode lights with their leads soldered together to form patterns like Christmas trees, etc. They each had about 10 lights and were only a $1 each. Other than that you could look anyplace with a big selection of Christmas decorations for sale.

I moved on to the main docking bay. If you look to the right on the first pic you can see the thermal formed reactor buldge. The second pic shows how the top of the bay has several small openings that will let light into the bay from the internal hull lighting. I tested it from an external light source and it makes the bay glow like the studio pics of the Star Destroyer.

The only thing missing from a docking bay like this is a scale shuttle. Evil [}:)]

First thing was to find the shape that I wanted. I cut out the bottom of the control tower and then the topside but the top needs to be just a little longer to make up for the curve. I attached the fore and aft faces of the tower to the bottom and cold formed the top so that the back gently curved down. This was then glued in place to the bottom assembly. The sides where added by using a piece of card stock to trace the profile of the side panels. Transfer the card stock patern to some styrene and cold form them. Hope this helps.

Here is an over view of the surface detail. I start by chopping up tons of different shapes and thickness of styrene. Using fine point tweezerers gently stab the styrene bit so it stays on the end of one tine. Place a tiny drop of glue where you want the detail then set the bit in place. If your ambidextrous this whole thing will move along fast Laugh [(-D]

And this is how it looks all put together. In the first pic you can see something I added (marked with the arrow) that should be on the ship but wasn't clear in the schematics. The flight control deck that would normaly sit just in front of the surface decks on the Star Destroyer would sit at the bottom of the center trench on the Interdictor. So I mounted it on a column bringing it to deck level. I thought it looked good there but tell me what you think.

The Star Destroyer kit is a REAL pain to deal with on any level. SoapBox [soapbox]

There are tons of fit problems, some of the detail is wrong or missing, and lets not talk about drilling...or how many bits you'll break. I'll be posting some pics on the surface detail here soon and you can see the plan in action. Sorry I missed you're question on lights Mike. Yes there are. From the look of things in the schematic the gravity wells are 4 units that extend through the upper and lower hulls. The acrylic half spheres will be used on the bottom also. I've been working on the upper and side trenchs for now. I don't want to close up the bottom until I can work in some fiber optics and wire the engines. If you like I'll post a pic of the upper trench in progress...its lookin cool Big Smile [:D]

Ok guys I got to work on the upper decks and trenches.

This first pic shows a test fit of the completed array to the upper hull. The fit turned out great to my surprize.

This is the materials used to make the side trenches. The I-beam also helps to support the upper hull.

To find the hight of the front and back of the upper deck I layed a circle template on top of the sphere.

This is a view of the upper deck layout.

RECIPE FOR AN ENGINE ARRAY

690 parts styrene
1/4 oz liquid plastic cement (brand not important)
6 #11 Xacto blades
4 bandages (use as needed)
music of your choice (but not needed)
1 blender
Prep time:38 hours
Cook time: (it is not recommended to heat the array rather try serving cold with just a pinch of testors enamel)
Enjoy Dinner [dinner]

Here is the lighting set up for the main engines. From left to right: super bright 5mm LED (like those found in the bright key chain lights), panel mount 5mm LED light holder (will be inserted into the styrene tube), 1/4" styrene tube (main engine stub), silver mylar ( will go inside engine stub), and the main engine bell.

Now back to the trenches...quite literally.
ps: The blender you ask? Will thats for the mixed drink of your choice after this optical nightmare is finished. Wink [;)]

We have ignition! I test fired one of the main engines and it looked good to me so I'll go with the plan I had using the mylar as a reflector. I'm still waiting for the lights to show up so I can run all the engines at once Mischief [:-,]

Thanks for the input. What I have done so far is to sand the back side of the bell so only the the rings and blades where left. The bell will then mount to a styrene tube lined with some kind of silver mylar wrapping paper to act as a reflector and will be lit by a bright white LED. I just placed an order for a bunch of LEDs and grain of wheat bulbs and the cost is not bad at all. Most of the multi-packs are around $2 to $4 for several bulbs.

Thanks stipp I was very happy with the way they looked after detailing. I am working in some lighting for the main and secondary engines to show more of that detail. On the studio model of the Star Destroyer they had to add reflectors around the bulbs to get that great looking glow out of the main engines. So we'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks guys. I jumped around a little and started the secondary decks on the upper hull. I need to take a trip to the store and restock on styrene so I can finish up the engine array. At this point I have a good guess at what will be needed to complete this build and as far as supplies go it is turning into about a $12.00 build(not including time Dead [xx(]

). Not bad when you look at the price of kits these days. Once I get the array done I'll post it and the upper decks in order.

Actually, the gravity well generators are used to bring other ships out of hyperspace :). I'm a Star Wars junkie. I really enjoy watching this stuff being built. Great job!! Way more skill than I have, haha. I'll be watching for more progress reports. I'm excited to see the final product.

Hey Matt,

Just wondering, are you building a Dominator-class Interdictor or an Immobilizer-class? (Ok, I'm an SW geek and I really am interested in your build!) I've been looking into Imperial ship classes and was thinking about doing an Immobilizer myself, but the bigger Dominator caught my eye. Cool stuff! This is one of the main engine bells with the inside detailed. Its a little hard to see but there is a ring just inside the upper edge of the bell that sits on top of the bells internal ribs. If you look at close up pics of a Star Destroyers engines when lit you can see what I mean.

The engine bells are all formed and trimed. It all worked out rather smooth. In front of the array you can see the wood form that was made for the bells.

I don't think there is any right or wrong with this one. As with most movies that turn into many many books there are lots of interpretations. The whole build so far is on my site and it has the schematic I'm using.

To answer some questions. The AMT kit would have worked great for the second design thats floating around. It looks more like a modifide Star Destroyer having the same surface decks and control tower. The design I chose was that of a new ship sharing only the substructer. You could build it from the kit but and that was one option I concidered. With every project I start I try to set goals and new chalenges for myself. In this build it was to go 100% scratch and use no kit parts or I'm just sick...Still trying to figure that out??? Big Smile [:D]

The engine bells could be robbed from the kit if needed but I wanted to build them. To form over them would increase the diameter and would not look right or fit correctly.
The Interdictor does not have much in the way of offensive weapons aside from the gravity well projectors and is limited to turbo laser emplacements on the surface. Think of it as a submarine. A subs primary objective is a weapons delivery system. They will engage in battle if needed however have a better advantage on the perimeter. The Interdictor will travel the perimeter of the battle zone where it has a clear view of the battle and pinpoint the most accurate location to generate a gravity well.

I think Stipp might be right why not use the AMT Star Destroyer engine bell and then heat form over it then you can add the detail to the inside by the way how are you going to build the trenches on each side of the ship and how are the defensive/offensive armament going to be made

I started adding the detail around the main engines. Lots and lots of little parts here. For the main engine bells I will thermal form them over a wood master that has yet to be turned on a lathe. I kept holding out thinking I'll luck out and find the shape I'm after available in one of my parts boxes. NO DICE. Angry [:(!]

So sometime after work on Sunday I'll make the masters.

They are gravity well projectors. The ship would be able to generate an artifcial gravity field that could trap and or prevent ships from jumping to hyper-drive. An Interdictor cruiser would be used in conjunction with the destroyers. Effective and formidable...now I'm really starting to question my sanity Propeller [8-]

That is top drawer stuff, Matt! It is great that you are showing us the techniques your using. We all can learn a lot from somebody as skilled at the plastic arts as yourself.
Did you call the spheres gravity well generators? A weapon I'm assuming.

Here is a preview of one of the secondary engines. The flare on the exaust was done by heating the very end of a piece of tubing with a heat gun set on low. After the edge became soft the end of a large size Sharpie was inserted into the tube just enough to flare the edge.

Will with the amount of glue used on the control tower I had to set it aside so it could cure. In the mean time I started working on the engine array. Not as easy as I thought at first. There is a convergence of 6 different angles at the secondary engine boxes. It took some doing but I think I got it.

The funny thing is I drew up a plan for the Executor at the first of the year with a start date early next year. The really cool part is that to keep it in-scale to the AMT Star Destroyer (1600 meters) the Super Star Destroyer (8000 meters) will be 75" long Mischief [:-,]

The over-all substructer will be plexi-glass with a sheet styrene skin laminated over the top. The only quandary is what I'm going to do with it when I'm done Confused [%-)]

Ok, now you've got me interested. I'm an SW junkie, but my modelling in this area has been limited to building my own biker scout armor. Hadn't really thought about building ships... but there's something about the Imperial-class ships... and I always thought the Interdictors were a really cool idea. I may have to start something similar.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Now that the face of the control decks are detailed it consists of 160 indvidual pieces and the neck is comprised of just over 200 pieces. Its really starting to keep your eyes busy. Tongue [:P]

Is Tap Plastic a good source for plastic shapes?

It was from one of the books I'm not sure which one. There are two concepts of this, the one I'm working on and one that has a control section more like the Star Destroyer from some comic book art. As far as Tap Plastic goes I use them for casting supplies or scrap plexi-glass, but they do have acrylic shapes. I had the bottom half of an Easter egg that was the size I was after and found the halves that matched. Now there are eight that are exactly the same (4 top side 4 bottom side)

Very cool idea. I'd like, at some point, to put an entire fleet of Star Destroyers and support ships in a little dio/display. And I'd have to have an Interdictor there. But it would be a small scale, like maybe 1/700 or smaller, just for the sake of room.

Then I'd need to build a Rebel Fleet as well, with Mon Cals and the rest, facing off against the Empire. Oh, the big ideas I have...
