Revell 1/96 Cutty Sark
Posted by madcitydave on Friday, December 14, 2012 1:25 PM

I have lots of parts remaining from a 1/96 Cutty Sark if anyone is in need.  It took two used kits to build a complete ship.

Would you happen to have the main and fore course yards?

All the best

Yes, all yards are available but not the lower masts, which were warped on my original kit.  Just let me know by number which items you need.  $10 plus postage is fine.  You might want to call me to talk about some if the issues with this kit, at 608-575-2528.  Dave

Yes, I have the flags.  What is a "Scientific" Cutty Sark?

Scientific was a brand of wooden models. Decent detail but you had to make a lot of parts yourself. Cutty sark was one of many models they offered.

Hello, I have built this scale model 4 times and I am getting ready to build it again...great selection.  I am building the 1960 version this time(again)..and I will highly detail it.  Great ship...last of her kind.

Any photos of your previous efforts?  Let me know if you have any missing, warped or broken parts.  You can have whatever you need.

I don't have the instructions easily available but, the two spars I need are the two largest spars both in length and diameter.  I plan on using them on Revell's 1/96th Thermopylae.

I'll give you a cal.

Started my 1960 version of this wonderful 1/96 kit of the CS...I'm finished with the hull and am now beginning to work on the bowsprit.

It'd suggest fitting the bowsprit but not installing it until rigging begins.  I had to modify the hole in the hull to,get the bowsprit to line up.

Indeed...I already made the mods myself.  I had to file the insert round and to align it with the bullworks.

I will only mount the bowsprit, not the jib boom or the dolphin striker at this time.  I weather everything before I install it..so that takes time as well.

Today was an epic day for model building...I put in around 8 hours...yippy.

The hull is finished and I am finalizing the deck  houses and furniture.  I tosses the unscale and erronious railing system and began from scratch. I cut out the access door for the main cabin access and built an open one. Now I am adding some scale barrels that will chain lashed to the aft deck house...to induce the feeling of externally stowed stores...sometimes done when the hold was full or namely when a short trip meant them being removed at a later date before the long journey began.

This kit is an earlier version so the detail is very well represented.

Next will be finishing off the main house and I will be changing out the unaccurate boat with one more accurate and better to scale.  I will be changing out the short inaccurate galley stove pipe as well.

I found after some patient soaking that the nearly 50 year old water transferes still worked well....just after I trimmed them prior to soaking..so they would fit their locations better.

Well...off till next time......I hope to have some images by then.

I was just thinking about using some barrels or rope coils to hide the ejector pins marks in the deck.

I always use rope coils to hide imperfections..along with spars and similar stuff.

The best way I have used to apply coiled rope is easy........lay out a thin layer of Elmer's on a piece of scrap wood and then coil tour rope on it...then using a thin blade cut under it and pull it up..without distorting it too much then lay it down on your spot...fix any errors and you have a nice coil glued down and the glue dried transparent.  Looks great.  I came up with this trick about 45 years ago.  It's probably how everyone does it......

Good luck.  I hope to have some pics up today.

And where I left off.  I will add spare spars and rope coils too..as I work my way forward.

I left lots of molding imperfections and minor imperfections....cuz I'm just plain lazy........:)

I did a bit more adding *stuff*.  I chained down the barrels and I remembered a story in one of my refererence books about how *SouthEasterners at times would belay everlly large cargo directly to the deck and secure it to the cabins...In my case extra long cut lumber that failed to find a home in the hold.

As I work my way forward...I add details.  I will finish off with coiled rope..when the time comes..still lots of deck furniture to be added.
