That is some outstansing work with the fiber optics. Definitely some really cool stuff you are trying to achieve with it. This is fun to watch.

I'm sorry to hear that the Mayflower is on hold. Yet, I can understand. It is indeed immensely sad that PB's actions has had the terrible impact it has. I bemoan the loss of years of valuable reference material as a result. That is all I will say on that subject. It has been beat to death and I in no way want to derail your fabulous build thread.

Just glad to see you at it and demonstrating your marvelous skills.

This is a fascinating WIP. Although from 1964 to 1968 when the show ran I did not watch it much, I guess I felt too old for it - thank goodness I'm feeling a lot younger now.

I am interested in your use of fiber optics and led's on your project. I have a ship in my stash for which I might - only might - attempt to use some lighting when I get around to building her. Your thread is very helpful in that regard and it's also entetaining and instructive from a modeler's point of view.

Keep up the good work! Looks like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel  (sorry about that turn of a phrase ).

 

Hey Mike--how are you. I'm glad this is helping you. This has been a real journey for me too. At the start of this I never thought I'd be monkeying around with fiber optics. Yet-- here I am... monkeying around with fiber optics. Stay tuned because I already have some new developments on what I did today. I will post updates as I progress. I think that what I plan to test out could prove helpful to you and others that want to work with this stuff.

And yes-- the light at the end of the tunnel is near. Lol!

That's Bishop the day I found him under a pile of junk at work. This is him now.

The first picture was his first "Experience" with food, so he dove in face first ! He weighed 3.3 oz. when I found him.

Now he's 13 LBS !!!

Oh man...Bishop is a cutie. I love cats, always have. That kitten picture of him is hilarious.

Okay, I have to ask. Do I get something for turning 19000? Stick of gum? Sanding stick? Piece of candy? Yeah I know... nada. 

Hey--say hello to Cobi. She is 18 plus years old. She was a stray as well. Taking her in was one of the best things that I ever did. She could not have been more loyal. For over 18 year she'd meet me at the door when I got home from work, with her arthritis-- cataracts, and all. In her younger years she'd wait on the window sill looking for my return from work. I'd see her staring out the window at me as I got the mail. She had an amazing internal clock knowing when I'd be coming home.

Cobi fought the good fight. Thanksgiving weekend of 2017 she had to be put down. I miss the little rascal. I am sure I will get another one but I want to take a break. The last two years were rough will all the health issues that she had. Anyway--I feel it fitting that she be part of this thread because she so often was next to me when I worked on the models, or, while I typed endless posts on the computer. LOL. 

No condolences please. It was her time and her suffering is over.

Sorry ..... Shortly after I posted the whole "Chicken Thing" ......

Bigfoot snuck into my chicken coop and ATE the Saber Toothed Chicken's.

I did manage to get a very blurry picture ( They alway's are ) of him as he ran toward's me.

OK .... Truth ...... I tried "repetedly" to get the Plastistrut tubing/ teeth to stay in the chicken's beak (without glueing it there ) but "FAILED" every time.

(Trust me,.... I Wanted THAT picture, almost as bad as you wanted to see it !)

 

 

 

Buddy, that is too funny. You clearly have captured something exotic, rare, and ferocious. We should all be very afraid.

Interesting update, Steve. Working with fiber optics looks cool. I did something with it once, something train-related, but I don't remember.

The Seaview is looking great lit up, and on a side note I'm surprised how much that conning tower with the diving planes installed looks like the vertical and horizontal stabilizers on an airplane.

(incidentally, I am looking at the Admiral, currently paused on my TV as I type). Pretty sure it's the very first 'Voyage' I am watching.

Hey Greg... Yeah fibre optics is cool. The light is very directional but it has its purposes. Also...it won't be a brilliant as something like an LED, but, again, it has its place.

Now that is an interesting idea. I will do some testing. Thanks for that. Good thing I didn't glue them in.

My two cents about the optics. I use plastic cutters to cut the fibers to the desired length. This leaves the ends somewhat jaggy.

Dont remember if it worked ... ( heck .... dont remember why I "landed" on this planet either ! )

I think that some of wrangling I did made the holes a little out of round. Dang soft plastic! Not much I can do.

Take some Plastistruct or Evergreen tubeing, slightly larger than the optic fiber, and make your own "bezel's  ( very thin .... tiny even ) and slip the optic through them. Viola... navigation light housing's.

Excellent update Bakster.  Your build is beyond cool.  Top drawer stuff we're witnessing here.  Hope you get to feeling better.

Well--I felt well enough to do a little work.

Below: Looking towards the bottom of the conning tower you can see how I fed the fiber optics. It's a bit tight but the fibers are flexible enough. 

Below: A view from the outside. I did it so part of the optic protrudes from the wall simulating a glass bezel of some sort. Similar to how it is molded in the first place. It does little for the lighting when viewed from the front because most of the light comes from the tip of the optic. My other option was to pull them in flush. They look cool that way too. On the fence and I am open to opinions.

Below: Isn't fiber optic cool. I positioned the optic towards the window where the sun was coming in. Look how it lights up. This is such cool technology.

You will want to sand the end flat with a sanding stick and then use a polishing stick of some sort. The end result will look like a crystal clear lens. Trust me--it makes a difference in how the light looks and how well it transmits. You want to do this to both ends of each optic.

I was perusing the forums and found you building this. WOW! What a cool project and subject. I haven't had the time to go through your entire thread and see all that you have done but, what I've caught so far is quite excellent. Count on me to follow along with you to the finish. Really want to see how this comes out.

By the way? What came of your Mayflower?

Hey Joe! It is great to hear from you. Yeah I did wonder and I have thought about you more than once. It sounds like you are well, and that is good to know.

Thanks about this project. It is a long thread so I don't blame you if you don't get through it all. It will be good to have you watching. Unfortunately, the flu has me sidetracked and nothing has been done since the last update. It could be a few more days before I start again. 

Ah yes, my glorious Mayflower build. I hammered away at it for two years. Then, a series of setbacks ultimately sapped my will to continue on with it. I decided to set it aside and build a more "simple" build. The idea was to rekindle my modeling juices and then go back to it. That is what this build was supposed to do. The irony in all of this is that not long after shelving the Mayflower, Photobucket drove the final nail into the WIP. Two years of work is lost. There are some fantastic posts of advice from others on that WIP. I may still try to reconstruct my portion of it but there will still be gaping gaps from other posters. It will be a ton of work and I don't know if I have the stomach for it. Maybe I just carry on from where I left off. We'll see.

Steve, that looks awesome all lit up!

I've apparantly missed the debate on PPP sandability. My opinion is that it is very sandable, if anything, could be argued it is too sandable/soft. But me, I like the sandability because it sands fast and I have little patience sanding putty. I just want it over with.

It is not being wet-sandable that bothers me a little.

Timmy, I was hoping you weren't going to say 1/87th!!!

Yeah I remember a discussion about sandability. I am glad to hear from you that you can. This might be worth a try. Btw. I recall reading somewhere about the Tamiya brand. That they had the same problem that I encountered. There was no clear answer given from that post though. Just their opinion that it does not feather.
