I wasn't Implying that the comic wasnt worthwhile. I Eagerly wait for each episode.

I just meant that it "catches" my eye and I wind up looking through it 4 or 5 times......

And the next thing you know..... 4 hours have elapsed !

We just need to make sure that we get invited. 

I'v got my lifevest packed.

Primer is applied. A few things to note:

1. With close examination I could see that my filler work on the main deck could be better. Using CA was probably not the best choice for the cramped quarters of that piece. It is a little wavy in some spots and I may have lost some detail with the hatch covers. It will have to do though, and it is certainly better than not doing anything. The fit of that piece was atrocious. I'll take the end result over the gaping gaps. The point in this is ... I need to get better at filling. Maybe more experimenting with Tamiya Putty and such.

2. I did have some lint/dust issues when I sprayed. It occurred more at the beginning of the spray session and then it gradually tapered off. I am not sure where that was coming from. Maybe the jar from a previous paper towel cleaning. Not sure. But--I can remove those before color coat.

3. I forgot to fix the leading edge of the conning tower. Dagnabbit! So--I have to fix that and then finish with the coating.

4. From what I could tell my filler work on the cadillac fins is adequate. I need to look closer, but, from what I was seeing, it was looking acceptable.

5. My condo stinks of lacquer thinner. Blah! I used Tamiya Extra Fine. I like this stuff because it is fine grained. But, I hate the smell, and... it really does not sand well... in my opinion. Someday, I might try an automotive primer that may sand better. I am sure the smell will be no better. If you guys have suggestions on this, I am open to it. Again...something that sands well. By that I mean that it feathers nice. I find that the Tamiya sort of tears up leaving ridges. Again... just my opinion. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Wow. Respect-O-Meter just went up a big notch.

Condos are not what a person might call roomy.  And I've both built and designed condos.

While not Herculean--a shipmate of mine retired to a 3 bedroom Condo; two of those are railraod layout--it's still impressive.

Well--time to do a retract. I wet sanded the model and I had no issues. I don't know what I had done different the last time that caused me some issues. This time, it sanded smooth as silk. I might have used too course a paper on my last go. Not sure. I used 4000 grit this time around. It did well to pull down some areas that came out slightly pebbly. So--for now, I'll stick with the Tamiya. Sorry Tamiya for my doubting you. 

Further inspection of the cadillac fins confirmed that they are good to go. There are very minor irregularities, but they won't be seen. I am calling it good.

It is hard to image the piece to show those details. Here it is anyway. 

Say Capn--great to hear from you. My Condo is a two bedroom with a half basement. In light of that, the Respect-O Meter may have dropped. LOL. My first go at this hobby was out of a 2 bedroom apartment. That was cramped, and I vented the fumes out of a window. 

I have ample room. My second bedroom is pretty much a pseudo workshop. The basement is where I spray, and I vent it through a wall into the garage. The problem is, fumes still build up down there. When my furnace kicks in... it spreads it throughout the condo. Ah well. It is a small sacrifice. Fortunately, I don't use lacquer very much.

Your friend using two bedrooms for a MR layout is my kind of person!

Many year's and many layout's ago, I had to "punch" a hole thru a bedroom wall into ... of all place's ... a bathroom. Just so I could get a return loop installed.

It freaked my friend's out every time I ran a train over the toilet!

Thanks Tim. Yeah, I am happy with them. My filler work turned out ok. Speaking of filler work. Along with the depression on the leading edge of the conning tower... I had noticed a sinkhole in another location. Trying to expand my filler arsenal, I reached for the Tamiya putty. In the past I struggled with feathering their putty. This time, it went well. I did some things different. I wet sanded for one. Then, I started with 2800 grit and finished with 4000. I sprayed the primer coat and it looks good. 

This week I will be spraying the color coat. It is great to have reached the paint stage. I am still undecided about the final color. I am pretty sure that it will be a shade of my own concoction. Run for the hills!

So Tim... two questions for you.

1. How would you do streaking on the hull? Like to simulate discoloration from metal exposed to water for a prolonged time. Similar to rust but not rust. Follow? What would you use? Pastels? Oils? 

2. How is the bomb shelter coming along? Aka house foundation. Still slinging blocks?

Lastly, that is funny about the wall. You are a hoot, Sir.

Well..... The easy question first.....

My wife decided she loves me too much to let me "SQWISH"  myself soooo.... We have hired a "Professional" to complete the job.    (THANK GOD!!!) But we have to wait a month before they get here.

( Not that I didnt know what I was doing....... but the "danger factor" was at 10 ! )

As for streaking. I would use Oils. Give her a cote of Gloss cote first. Make's it easy to fix mistake's without pulling up previous paint, and help's make the streaking go on "more realisticly"..... (That's a real word..... isn't it ...???   )

What you probably need is an exhaust fan in the garage.

What has worked well before is to duplicate the dryer exhaust vent (the outside bit is a stock item, and usually easy to match).  You then connect that to however you are venting to the garage (or add a booster to just evacuate the garage)

Condo assn. will almost never notice the second vent.

When I owned a house, I started with a 2x the width of the double hung windows (all the same size other than the bathroom, handily enough).  Which had a vent set in it.  Pinned the sash closed on the insert.  Blew both dust and fumes through that.  Nice thing was that I could dismount it all to set up for overflow guests.

love what you are doing steve , I also agree with timmy , oil's over a gloss coat are pretty easily managed , and their's a lot you can do with them mate .

Say Capn... THAT is not a bad idea. I think that you are right. I am probably not getting enough air draw. It would be easy enough for me to do too. I am gonna give that some serious thought. Thanks for that!

Ok... so you are in the oil over gloss camp too. As you guys know, I am still getting my feet wet with modeling. I have thoughts and perceptions about things that may or may not be correct. So, what I'd like to do is tell you my concerns with this, and, you guys walk me over the impasse. 

My main concern is with spraying the gloss coat. What do you recommend for the gloss? I know that a lot of people use Future. My concerns about using Future is that it is a bit of a skill to lay a nice clean layer. I did not do too well when I tried it years back. My main concern is a finish free of orange peel and or sandpaper. What happens then if you jack it up? I don't want to be stripping the model and starting over. Especially, when I have electronics mounted within the sub. Or can it be sanded out? And if you can sand it... how does that affect the color layer? Sanding would make the clear opaque and block the color layer. Or do you then polish it? My brain hurts.

The next point then is this. Assuming I lay the gloss ok, and I do my fancy oil work. Then... I need to spray a dull coating over the top of it all. Ideally, I'd like the finish to be semigloss to flat, but, certainly, not a gloss. This is yet another layer to worry about, and, all these layers start to kill detail. My brain really hurts.

It seems less problematic to me if I'd use pastels followed by a top coat of dull to seal it. Two steps... done.

Like from the movie The Fly... Help me! Help me! (Sorry Greg) I remember that creeps you out.

 I have been using humbrol clear gloss , goes on really well , just don't try to put it on too thick all at once , 2-3 light coats .

then mix your oil wash , apply , dry for a couple of minutes and wipe off what you don't like . let it dry over night . on my victory I didn't apply a dull coat , I wanted a washed out wood effect , but if you satisfied with your finish give it a coat , then you can use things like tamiya panel line accent colour's , another highlighted oil colour , in spacific area's , even some ground up soft pastel crayon's , these are great for rust effect's , and the light one's for salt damage .

Hey Steve... That is great info. Thanks so much. I want to confirm one thing about your process. Do you need to thin the Humbrol clear for airbrushing? Or is it good straight from the bottle? If it does need to be thinned.... are you using their recommended thinner?

Steve... okay, good to know. I'll order the thinner too for just in case. All this fuss for just a little weathering. I plan it to be pretty subtle. But, just like with the fiber optics, it will get my feet wet to it. And, I sure enjoyed messing with the fiber optics. Cool stuff.

I use Testors Gloss coat. As long as you don't "go off" with a lot of coat's , the detail's will still be there. They also have a Semi-Gloss.

Tamya has a Satin gloss that could be the perfect final coat.

Thanks for clear coat advice as well. You guys have given me something to think about. I HATE THINKING! 

I went to HobbyTown today and picked up some Tamiya paint. I bought a jar of dark gray, and one that is lighter. I'll mix the shade that I want. I am also picking up on the Capn's venting advice. I am going to do it. I found some inline duct fans that should fit the bill. I am adding that to my to do list.

You know... work is really getting in the way of my modeling fun. Just saying. All those hours at work when I could be at home slinging plastic. Sigh.

Well, I better quit yammering and get some work done.

Greg's thoughts on a couple things for your perusal;

Your idea of using pastels with a clear coat over the top: I recall doing this back in my weathering train car days. The airbrush blew the pastels off, was really frustrating. It can be done, but it's a goofy process I'd try to avoid.

Your asking about clear coat, specifically Future: I've had nothing but trouble trying to spray future (it dips nicely, and I agree with Cadet Chuck, I hear it works good on floors). I'd rather see you use any of the clear coats mentioned already, that's just me.

But then I'm all the time reading of folks says "Huh? I spray it all the time, no problems". So who knows. 

Oil washes: glad you have some expert advice from other loyal followers, cuz I know nothing.

And no worries re the Hedison quote. BTW, his name (David Hedison) came up at Eurchre last night. Hmmmmmm, odd.
