I liked the "before top coat" picture..... but then I like ANYTHING that's rusty and crusty !

You toned it down "just right" for a sub that's only been at sea for a month or so.

Your on the home streach. Cant wait to see her out of dry-dock !

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Only because you specifically asked...... normaly I wouldnt "Hi-jack" a thread with a picture of an unrelated subject.

If you want to see more, go to the "WEEKEND GROUP BUILD"  There I have posted Way Too Many Picture's !

Steve,

I really love your weathering effect! So, is the darker tone underneath the uppercoat pigments? Subtle and effective.

Steve

I hope you had a Merry New Years!

Hey Steve--thank you!

To your question... I think so. What I used on the sub is AIM Products Weathering Powder. What they make it out of I am not exactly sure. I had purchased a kit of 8 colors from a local hobby store back when I was working on the Mayflower. I think that I paid $29 for the kit. I was grumbling about having to buy the kit-- but-- to be honest--all the colors in the kit can be used for future projects. And--this stuff goes a long way. I'll be dead and buried before it gets used up. It works well. It does come off with water too. So--you can manipulate it if needed.

I'd like to mention something too about the before and after image. I really laid the powder on heavy because I was not experienced in it enough to know where I should draw the line. I was not sure if my top coat would quickly bury the effect. That is why I went heavy with it... so that I had room to work on filtering it. In the end... I probably could have gone lighter with the application of it. But--who cares.

My New Years was good! Thanks... and I hope you had a good one too!

Steve

PS: For reference... here is a link to the kit that I mentioned.

The problem of over-weathering

Why not solve my problem of over-weathering by following the process of pre-shading? Basically, it pushes the weathering back by using the hull color as top coat. At the same time--it seals it in. For the subtle effect that I was looking for... this worked pretty well. It got me very close to what I was looking for.

Below: Here is the finished product. Er...um, NOT. Here is how it looked before top coat. Beautiful isn't it?

Below: Here is how it looks after the top coat.. The sail assembly is not glued; it's placed on the model just for reference. I pushed the weathering way back. I didn't want it to look like a rust bucket. Some of the shading is lost in the image... the camera does not do well to capture the more subtle shades. Anyway--for what it's worth--that's that.

A few things that I learned in all of this:

1. The problem that Greg mentioned of weathering chalk blowing off by airbrushing seemed to be a common theme in my research. Most suggested applying a seal coat by spraying from above, and to let the coating settle on the model.

2. Steve5's suggestion to use decal setting solution is a good one. I tested it--it works.  It is something to consider. In fact--Humbrol follows that line of thought as well. I found some excellent videos that Humbrol produced on the subject. I pasted links below for if you are interested. I do not believe that you'd need to use their product line either. I am not pushing their product.

3. The other solution is to use commercial weathering powders/pigments. I purchased a set of weathering powders from a company called AIM Products. They add binders to the powder. Let me tell you... they work. I would have zero problems airbrushing as normal.

Here are the Humbrol links.

Next up? It is time to black out all of those ballast vents.

That is all from here except it's darn cold out. Blah.

It's incredibly sunny out, and only 25ºF at 1400 here in Arlington, Texas.

I'm somewhat glued to my coffee, and may stay that way.

For your neck of the woods that is pretty cold. And yes... it is a good day to stay in.

BTW. I have affectionately named the second fan, "The Capn." A tribute to your idea.

Not the first time I've been called a blowhard Big Smile

LMAO. That is not what I meant but that is pretty darn funny. Thanks for the laugh.

I did some spray work yesterday and it was clear to me that the "Capn" helps to evacuate spray and fumes. This was well worth the effort and expense. Giddy up!

Well, I made a weathering breakthrough with what I am trying to do. I might have an update later today.

That is all from here except it's darn cold out. Blah.

And I thought John Wayne TP was bad. Not sure that I want virtual TP.

It's not the virtual TP that's the problem...... It's all the swiping you have to do ..... with your phone.

What you probably need is an exhaust fan in the garage.

Say Capn. If you have your ears on--this post is for you.

I took your advice and added a second fan. I mounted it inside the basement, but, close to the exit point at the garage. You can see that I reduced the exit diameter near that point. It has been this way since I rigged the system and I was not gonna change it at this point. I realize this creates somewhat of a bottleneck and possible backpressure. I did it that way because I wanted to reduce the drywall repair for if I ever move. Maybe someday--if needed--I'll change that to dryer vent diameter.

So how does it work? Well--the vacuum was sucking plastic parts against the intake filter. If I had long thick hair like Timmy--I'd get pulled into it too. Good thing my noggin is streamlined. Ha! Yeah ok. That was all bunk--except for the streamlined.

The truth now. I checked the output at the garage and the air flow does seem stronger. Also, the filter at the spray booth intake is being pinned against the housing. The filter needs cleaning but, I don't think that the vacuum was that strong before.

This should certainly help things.

BTW. I have affectionately named the second fan, "The Capn." A tribute to your idea. Yes

Thanks for the advice.

No .  Apparently It's going to take a "note from my mother " to get that project off the ground. Every time I start to do the wiring, 10 other things jump up. My life belong's to other's.....................     Sigh.............

BLASTED!

Now look what you did. You have the Admiral chiming in. You had better get on that or else. You know how he gets.

Hmm. Well... I think I had better fix those doors and repaint them to the hull color. That will be an easy fix since I had have saved some of the original color.

Funny about the little man. That could be kind of cool. Lol.

By all means then. Go get the kit! Yes

Maybe I should leave it the same color as the hull? In the real world thats what it would probably be. Correct?

Yeah, in the "real world" the doors would be the same color...... You "could" cut a very small flat piece of plastic and pose the door open......

STOP !!!!!! Dont listen to the man behind the curtain !!!!!!    He is leading you astray !!!!

( Yea.... maybe pose a little guy in the doorway fishing...... )

THIS ISN'T HELPING TO GET THE PROJECT FINISHED !!!!!

:Timmy has been sniffing "too much" glue.  His ideas are Lame and should be ignored ! :

Maybe you should paint the door's the same color as the hull...... Stop the madness...... stop me..... before I "suggest something truely horrific.

Bakster
Hey! If you do build one...wait until mine is done. Don't embarrass me by building yours in a week! Lol.

The way I build stuff...... I would be "LUCKY" to even get the kit out of the box , in a week !
