Steve,

I'm not sure you want to hear this, but the vast majority of the spars in big steel windjammers were made of steel and painted.

The usual color was called "salmon buff." The Heller box art actually got it about right.

How much you want your fine model to look like the real ship is, of course, entirely up to you. But if you're going to paint the spare, the job won't get any easier than it is now.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

So it's too big for this model, but someday...

I really like the idea.

I goofed. Left the "hobby" out of the address. My bad; sorry.

Steve..Good night!  You're moving along nicely...clean and precise.

Check out *Cast your Anchor*..they have a nice selection of chain.  Just look for the number of links per inch you need.

Looking good!

Rob

I'm afraid Cast Your Anchor has gone out of business. When I checked its website, all I found was a statement that the site and domain are for sale.

I agree with GM...it's surprising how small the anchors are, even for a large vessel; and the chain is much smaller than one would expect.

the instructions say to make them green , even though they are brown on the actual ship I thought they looked good , and green does seem to be the major colour .

Your model is coming together very well and its nice to see the build log of this unique kit.  How did you come about choosing the color of green for the hatch covers and other fittings?

GMorrison
I think if anything your chain looks a little big.

I agree, that chain is quite a bit too big rather than too small. Keep in mind that it should be small enough to go around the corresponding "sprocket wheel" on the winch.

These photos should be worth a look to get the scale of things:

I don't know a lot of the history , it's as she sit's in the harbour now , it does have a screw , unfortunately I don't have any smaller chain , of to brisbane on sunday , which look's a bit dodgy with the weather at the moment , will look for some smaller stuff there . [ thank's for the comment's too ]

Really nice work. Is the era as she is now? I see it looks like she has a screw.

Lots of deck machinery I imagine.

I think if anything your chain looks a little big.

Im going to try some 3D printed chain. On the screen it looks very nice.

Great start Steve....These big iron Square Riggers were an entirely different breed then the wooden clippers that came before.

Nice model...I'll be watchin your build.
