I just had to get this on the bench..... lets see if I can get more than half-way through it.... before it goes back in the box to sit for a year...

Theres not a lot too it... and the rigging is almost non-existing..... so I "should" be able to power through it in just a few day's . Right ? ..... Right ?.....

It's from 1967 so the plastic is a bit brittle. We will see how many parts I maul....

What a fun, classic kit!

Just make sure you install the deck at the same time the hull halves go together!  lol

As far as ship kits go, it's very straightforward and without much in the way of difficult rigging or *fiddly bits*....but it represents a major icon in the history of model ship building.

Can't wait to see how it turns out :)

Not too many part's...

And this is one "HECK" of a lump of plastic for the sail.....

I may have to come up with something a little better for a sail.

No, the rigging is very basic. ( It's been a while since I'v fully rigged a ship, so I need the practice.)

Definetly an "Icon" of the age of discovery. The Carrak's were either painted in every color they could get, -Or- no paint at all. Im kinda leaning toward's something in the middle.   ( I dont want it to look like my paintbooth "exploded " all over it.

I will be back in a week with update's. ( I'm going to miss checking in with you guy's daily.......   CURSE YOU HUESNET !!!!! )

Thank's for looking guy's.

I'm just sorry I can't check in more often.   I'm putting in more overtime than a human should be allowed to do. ( this week will end up at 67 hr's )

I leave home in the dark ..... I get home in the dark .

I'm not sure, but I think my wife painted the house...... can't tell in the dark.

No progress on the Carrak, look's like I have yet another kit that's going to sit on the bench for a year........    If only I was un-employed..... then I would have all the time in the world !!!!

I know all about the hours. When at the refinery, I used to work 16, go home and eat/sleep(maybe), then get up to go back to do another 16, then repeat over and over. Pay was good but didn't help your health and family life any. Missed a lot of stuff with the kids. I was either working or sleeping.

Knowing your work, this is going to be a great build.

Timmy;

Gotta tell you. If that is an older Imai version, you can use actual wood stains on the plastic .

Yes it is, and yes, the instruction's say to do just that.....

But, I have bad luck staining anything but real wood.

I can go one better.

Just before my first marrage, I worked in a Foundary 18 hour's a day. The bus ride there was an hour and a half. The bus ride home was an hour and a half......

I lasted 3 week's , before I threw in the towel !!! ( I was late my last day because I fell asleep on the bus, and ended up on the other side of town !

Would you believe the paint's I'm using are the Wal-Mart " El-cheepo" Apple Barrel Acrylic's ?

I'v been experimenting with them for a few month's now, and I gotta say their not bad at all. ( And, at 50 cent's a bottle I can stockpile a LOT of color's ! )

That went right out the window.....

I decided, ( just before the first wash of dirty Black ) that it really needed more color..... so Walt Disney it is.

Super-impressed by your paint scheme!  The wash adds a perfect amount of texture/weather effect.

Hard to believe you're using apple barrel craft paint :)

When I built mine, I was mouting it to a wooden base with brass pedestals, so I used a dremel to open up the hatch area (don't know why it's molded over when the hatch roof sits on it later) so I could reach in with a nut driver to fasten the hardware for the base.

Anyway, great work!

Didn't get a whole lot done these past few week's

I decided to do the Gold first. it would be hard to get the dragon's painted, then try and go back with the Gold trim. I'm going to be hand painting the scale's one at a time. ( Other than the coat of primer, I'm hand brushing the entire ship ! )

I cant decide if the dragon's should be Red, or Green.

I thought about painting them Blue, but then I would have to paint some other stuff Blue just so they would tie in with the rest of the ship.

I also have a "dillemma".....

This kit is based on a model that's been hanging in a church in Spain for the past 500 year's. So it's NOT based on an "Actual" ship. As such, it has a few thing's that are not really "prototypical"

My problem is the main mast is bent ! It's a thick piece of plastic ( about the size of my pinky) and trying to heat it up to straighten it out would be a GREAT way to embed my thumbprint in it. I dont think this was a manufacturing accident, I think they just saw the model had a bent mast, and they duplicated it for the kit.

My other option's are ...

When I rig the kit, draw the rigging really tight and hope it won't let  go in the future.....( yea ....right...)

Cut the 1/4 inch piece of the "offending" mast out, and glue the two piece;s back together. I would have to re-enforce the center with a piece of brass rod,and the mast would be a bit shorter.

Ignore it , and just assemble the kit "As-Is"..... and hope you guy's dont notice it ...... ( I can hear the protest's now ...)

I'm open to suggestion's. It will be a few week's before I get to the mast so any help is better than the "Heat" idea.

Loving the colors on this ship! And regarding the dragons, why not both red and green? I was thinking red on the underside/bottom half of their bodies, green on the top and for the legs.

And honestly, id just deal with the mast as is, but I'm not as ambitious or particular as some others here!

Tim,

The mast is supposed to be bent at that location, so my two cents is to keep it that way. You are more than welcome to look through my WIP I did recently...... on the Imai kit.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Thank you for the link !

Had I bothered to look ( and I should have ) I would have had a clear picture of what this kit is SUPPOSED to look like.

I dont plan on going into all the detail you did on your's ...... but it's bound to happen anyway's .....

....... ( just stick with out of the box Tim ..... just out of the box ..... )

You are more than welcome Tim. Another Catalan Ship WIP you should check out is Rod Millard’s outstanding build. I had the honor of having his Catalan next to mine at the Phoenix Nationals.

PS. I know exactly what you talking about with the myth of “Out Of The Box” Personally, I don’t think it even exists....
