tamiya 1/350 prince of wales

I hear she is a challenging build but when finished she is fine looker.  Will keep a watch on this post.

I'm also building her Steve. Including PE, barrels and deck. The camo is a bugger.

Finished the hull (paint and weather)and working on the super. Not looking forward to the Pom Poms.

Thanks marcus , should look really nice , but I'm already having issues with the PE .  Model crazy  , will you be posting pics of your build , would love to see your weathering .

I took it from the pic I found of the POW just arriving at Singapore a few days before her sinking.

got the hull primed and started painting , I think it was greg who got me onto ,stynylrez primer , this stuff is great , always had trouble with primer until now . found some 1.8mm brass rod , which I will be using for shafts .

Looking forward to watching this! I have POW on mdeck for later this year.

I had to get some bluetack for the camo , finally able to do some more work on her .I chose to do the box art , just to be a bit different to steve . now for some weathering .

I’m pulling up a lawn chair here. Like a lot of other people I have this in my stash. I also have the Pontos set which I got for a really good deal which is the ONLY reason I have it!

Great job on the Camo so far. I have been contemplating on how I’m going to do the Camo on my PT boat when I do the later version. It looks like you got beautiful edges on her.

thanks steve , I have a bit of PE , not that confident with it yet . I like blue tack for that reason mate , nice edges . I wasn't that particular with the camo , I just wanted the colour scheme round about right , and different to steve's , who is going for the historical look . and doing a grand job of it to .

That's correct Steve, no one, except a rivet counter, is going to question the shape, size, or color of the Prince's camo. There are just not many photo refrences and those have been colorized.

finally able to get the wood decking on , this @#$#@ thing fought me all the way , almost gave it away , the glue tried to come off the wood split everwhere , mongrel thing it was , but at least it's on , bit iffy in places , but as I said its on .

you can see at the back of the wave break some daggy bits , hopefully they won't stand out too much

My deck was the same for me. I constantly had to go back, look at it in diffrent light and even carve along the planks to help let out the air. A place or two I added a little thin CA into the slits to help it adhere. I got them dow to the point where I'm not worring about it anymore.

thats a pity modelcrazy , the other one's I have done were great . got some work done on the turrets , will have to redo the barrels , not happy with them . also laid the chains in place , not glued yet

If I may ask, what brand of decking are the two other Steve’s using?

Hmmm, Steve5 did you clear coat it 1st? Seeing that you lost some of your hull red in that next to last shot made me wonder about the clear coat first.

I've found usind oils, burnt umber for new rust and burnt Siena for old rust, works well. I thin it with turpenoid and either use very little or a little or less. Then touch it with some clean turpenoid and let it flow naturally. On my POW, I did go heavy but that's not the norm.

Thanks gentlemen, I’m still on the fence on using wooden decks, but with the gaps on the POW as well as other kits, it will be easier laying deck than trying to hide those seams!

I agree with (Model) Crazy Steve on using oils. If you don’t like what you’ve done, then wipe it off and have another go at it. Although I think he meant Burnt Umber (Dark Brown) for old rust and Burnt Sienna (Reddish Brown) for new rust. You can also do salt streaks with either a Titanium White or a Zinc White.

I use Windsor & Newton Artist oils because the pigment is ground more thoroughly and the mixture uses better ingredients than student grade. A tube goes a long way so the cost is worth it.

Fantastic model. The story of her demise is quite worth reading. She sank herself mostly because the damage control was extremely, well, damaging. The torpedo damaged screw and shaft was attempted to be restarted, resulting in a failure of the waterproof gland and bearing that then led to fooding of the engineering spaces. At least the crew largely survived, unlike say Arizona several days earlier.

The four-rifle turrets never worked. One or more usually was out of operation.

A couple of interesting points. She lies in only 223 feet of water slightly more than 1/4 of her length.

Repulse was actually the longer ship.

223 is a (very) deep dive with scuba.
