OK guys, I completed this section, at least until I get the IJN ladders from B&A in Australia and attach the deck, but I'm moving on. The black paint under the 25mm AA gun platform is where I'm checking if I need to add some filler. I also need to add the railing before I spray the black base.

I added some detail interest to the area under the deck but can't find any pictures of it to really know what was in there. Probably no one will see them anyway. This is the area where the three AM (Alliance Model Works) 1.2cm twin AA guns go. I glued the bracing on the AA platforms and set them aside to dry before attaching them to the hull. This area is going to need to be repainted. Lots of dust in there No

I have been working dillegently every night on the Akagi. I have been replacing the bracing parts with the laser cut paper parts. Each one takes me about an evening each and still have several parts left to do. After this do I work on the AA guns or planes or do I go back to finishing the hull?

Whichever, make sure you have a good storage system. I use those hinged lid divided boxes like electronics parts or fishing lures go in.

Great point GM. I have a ton of small plastic baby food containers with lids that I saved when my grandkids were ibn their baby food period not long ago and they are perfect for separating and sorting out parts during a complex build as this one. I use a piece of masking tape and label each container with the reference. Once the parts are glued I peel off the tape.

Thanks John. It looks like I have a few more bracings to add for the platforms. I cut that oval part out of the OOB part, cleaned it up and sanded it thin. I glued it on last night before turning in.

The OOB piece looks more like prison bars rather than bracing (or whatever it is). It looks good Steve.

After completing the paper framework, at least as far as I can go now, I started back on the hull. I decided to scratch this....bracing? Or whatever it's suposed to be. I didn't like the oversized piece provided in the kit. In fact, the pieces I installed are oversized compaired to the picture provided in the "Kagaro Super Drawings in 3D" book, but WTH.

Thanks Mark. I'm completing the paper framework today and going back to the hull assembly.

I still need to get 3 sets of 3D IJN pulots and crew. Northstar is the only one who makes them and it takes 4 months to arrive for reasons only Northstar knows Confused

How did I miss this one. I think that I am insane when it comes to me working on P/E but you take the prize so far. Absolutely brilliant work.....Cheers Mark

I heard you were doing all six carriers of Kido Butai in 1/350 Although I think you would have to scratch Hiryu and Soryu as I don't think they are available yet !!! Looking forward to your future project

The reports of future Kido Butai builds have been greatly exaggerated, although I do want to get the Kaga and Shokaku in 1/350. Both are far more expensive than the Akagi and of course I would need to get the PE set for them.

I have the 1/700 Kaga triple decker in the stash and may have to get the Hiyru and Soryu in 700 as well. Lets see, that would just leave the Zuikaku

Buddy, yeah, I guess your right. My eyes and sanity need a break.
I got the laser cut paper from a guy in South Korea. It took some time for me to track him down after I saw his build on Pintrest. Outstandig modler. He had said that while his Akagi "LCP" was for sale, he never expected to receive an order from another country.

Steve,

Outstanding work.  I would finish the hull up and then move on to the smaller stuff.  Where did you get the paper details?

After this one, the other 5 will be done wrapped in flames as they appeared just before heading to the bottom.

Other than the smoke and flame, a lot less detail.

Thanks guys.

GM, yep, I got em. Most are full with the POW and NC parts though

Tojo, don't kid yourself. I'm positive your Akagi will turn out awesome. Hasegawa makes a beautiful kit OOB. I don't think I will go to this level on another build. I don't even want to add up the money I've "sunk" into this thing and I still have more to get! It may have been better, and absolutely less expensive, for me to go OOB.

After looking at this,no one here is going to see my OOB version of Akagi, which I am pretty pleased with but this surely takes it to the next level.A great tutorial to boot.

Do you have enough eyedrops to do all of those guns?

Thanks Buddy.

That's an idea. I saw some brass rod that Infiny sells or maybe something from Evergreen.

I saw the cutter from Black Cat. A little pricy for 1/350 scale. It would be smaller that a WW2 destroyer.

Steve,

Jiust got caught up with this build.  All I can say is wow.  In one of the earlier posts, you were wondering about the cable stays material.  I don't know the diameter you need, but have you looked at brass rod or stainless steel sutures?  Maybe there's a draw plate available to get the brass rod to the thickness you need.  Just curious, did the Coast Guard ship on Black Cat Model's website happen to find it's way to you?  Looking forward to more.

Thanks guys.

Here the gun is finished and next to a kit gun. It took me around 3 hours but now I know the sequence. They should take about and hour each and have 13 more to do....unless I loose parts.

Steve, I had a similar incident a couple weeks ago on a large detailed thread. I did not rewrite mine either and simply cut it very short. Sorry to hear and hope we didn't miss anything in the write-up.

By the way, those guns look really nice. It will be interesting to see how all that detail pops once you have it detail painted. Bow Down

Well I had a very long and thought out response, I sent it and the site had an error!!!Angry

I lost everything I wrote in the last 20 min so I won't retype it again. Let's just say, a lot.

Yet another reason, becides spell check, to type everything in Word first.

Some more work last night. I worked on the braces to the 25mm gun platform but there is some filling I need to clean up before I take a pic of it. I opend up the Infiny twin 25mm gun set and started assembly. I believe each of these guns (14) may just take an evening to build. This one is only half built.

Infiny Models are not for the faint of heart.

GMorrison
I think on a BB they were about 4 feet tall. At 1/350 that's about 1/8". I'm not sure where to get those currently. Try Floating Drydock.

That's what I remember from the painting instructions, that the maximum height was 48"

NJ had some differences around the bridge area vice Missouri, but that would be rivet counting.

If Floating Drydock doesn't have the decals, GMM used to have a set of white wartime numerals.  That was long ago, though.  As far back as wehn I got the xeroxed copies of the hull number painting instructions.  Sigh.
