I'll stsrt off with the Graff Spee, I got this kit from a person that I built the Mogami and Akagi for.  I've never built a Trumpeter kit before so this should be educational.  I got it with the wood decks but it needs more.

Who make a decent set of P.E. and barrels?

I have the Eduard PE set. I also have the Pontos deck. And in regards to your weapons, here are some more options. Although the 3D route is pricey, however, you don’t have to fiddle around with really small parts!

I unsersatnd Steve however remember, once you sign up, you have as long as it takes to complete it. I don't believe anyone is building a Schnellboot or the Tirpitz. If I had either, I'd throw them in.

Steve,

Alright, put me down for the 1/72 Schnellboot. And if I really want to go even madder than I am now, then put me down for the Graf Spee too.  I’ll have to look at what else I would want and need for the Tirpitz but I have a feeling it’s going to get expensive. I hope I live to regret this...

Oh yeah, I've delt with Shapeways before, picked up a set of Phase Cannons for my NX-01 Enterprise.  They were smaller than I thought but have nice detail.

I found a set of pontos decking in the box along eith a barrel set that had been hiding under some partsw and some P.E. railings.  I still am going to look into the Eduard sed and the White Ensign parts.  If I feel lucky with the V.A. I just might go with the Shapeways guns.  We'll see.

Love the badges Steve. Going to be hard to pick just one! Cant wait to see everyone's work here. Some real talent checking in here so far!

I have a solution in mind...Gonna build multiple kits on this one and grab my favorite badge for each!

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

I have thought about building another ship just for the badge. I may enter later but I am going to go and do an armor build or two before I decide.

That’s the one Bish. I’m going to have to go through your excellent WIP on your Schnellboot. I can’t remember if you shaved down the hump around the forward gun position and if you replaced the kit’s weapons with metal barrels. If so I really need to go over how you did them please and thank you.

I've been thinking of switching or at least doing more 1/700 scale ships going forward. I particularly wanted a Flyhawk kit to try out and since they have lots of Kriegsmarine this GB was highly anticipated. For my primary build lets lay the keel for the ...

Steve,

The Tirptz is the Revell 1/350 kit. The Graf Spee is the 1/350 Trumpeter kit.

Hard time finding a P.E. set for the trumpeter Graf Spee.  I've seen listings for the AQcademy kit But I'm not sure if it will fit the trumpeter kit I was given.

I even went to the Eduard site but when things got added up the price of their P.E. set was radidly heading towards 70.00

Here’s a complete set for the Trumpeter kit. I’ve purchased from Robi many times and he‘s awesome. The set comes with the detail and rails. You’re looking at around $40.00 USD. Hope this helps.

As far as i know there is only 1 Eduard set for the Trump Spee. 70.00 seems a high price given that the set is just over £22.

After several tries using my credit card and getting nowhere, I decided to take a chance and use my disability card from the V.A./Gov't.  To my surprise, it actually went through, I should have it from the guy you recommended (thank you for that,) in a couple weeks, then maybe the smaller guns from Shapeways.

I went into town yesterday trying to find the paints I'll need, or as close as I could get so I'm pretty much ready there.

Then, on to s few computer problems taken care of so I can post pictures again.  I've got some time on this one.

I havent started on the Koenig yet. But looking over the ICM kit, I decided that the kit desperately needed PE. So I ordered the PE detail kit from toms modelworks today to go with it.

That's great BB. You will quickly find however that Tom's is not in the same league as Eduard. The quality is just fine but the instructions leave a lot to be desired. Once you figure them out though, they look good Yes

Matt,

Tom’s PE is a good set. Just be aware that it is delicate so you won’t have more than two maybe three attempts at bending it before it breaks.

The Konig definitely needs PE, especially for rails. It’s gotten to the point for me that a ship doesn’t look finished without it.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with her.

GMorrison

I'd like to enter with an old stash member.

SMS Scharnhorst, a full hull resin kit from Combrig. 1/350.

I'll have to make some decisions about era and paint scheme.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing you build this kit Bill! I know you’ll do an outstanding job on her.  I’ve always wondered how resin kits go together, now I have a chance to see it.

Yeah my railing and cranes kit from Eduard for the KGV has been good with a few small mishaps. (First time really doing PE). But I couldn't find an Eduard kit for the Koenig anywhere. I saw a kit from white ensign and toms. White ensign was backordered so I went with the toms kit. See how it goes.

i do have the full pe detail set from Eduard for the North Carolina. Should be here in the next day or two.

Question is, do I start on the North Carolina, or the Koenig first!?  Confused

Thanks Steve, yes it will be a nice model.

I don't know why but the Germans seemed to always want a pair of cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.

Short history and if you are interested read Castles of Steel.

She and the second Gneisenau were both launched in 1906 and were the capital ships of the German East Asia Squadron, based in Tsingtao China.

As you know, Tsingtao Beer is a 100 plus year old brewery that bottles an excellent lager.

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were 8" cruisers. The squadron also included the 4" light cruisers Emden, Nurnberg and Leipzig. Later joined by Dresden.

At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the Squadron left China to sail to Germany via the Cape at South America. Emden was dispatched to the west to raid in the Indian Ocean.

All ships were repainted from the peacetime buff over white, to gray.

Emden created her own story, well worth a read The Last Cruise of the Emden.

The Squadron sailed to Chile and engaged the British at the Battle of Coronel on 11/1/1914, sinking two cruisers.

The Squadron continued around the Cape Horn and entered the Atlantic intending to sail home.

On November 8, 1914 the British received information about the battle and sent two 12" battlecruisers, Inflexible and Invincible to battle the Germans.

On December 7, the Squadron attacked the Falkland Islands, intending to destroy the wireless station and capture the coal bunkered there.

Unexpectedly, the two British ships and three cruisers had arrived at the Falklands a day before and were anchored behind a headland which obscured their presence until the Germans were in close range.

In the ensuing engagement on December 8, the British sank Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and all of the cruisers except Dresden, which escaped and returned to Germay.

Maximillian Von Spee was killed on Scharnhorst (the flag ), his son Otto was killed on Nurnberg and his son Heinrich was killed on Gneisenau .

BB, IMO, of the PE sets I have built with, Eduard is the easest, followed by White Ensign, Hasegawa then Tom's, due either to their thickness or instructions. I have never tried Flyhawk and have several off brand Chinese sets which seem to be fine. They all look good when finished and sometimes one manufacturer is all that's available. If you need any assistance with the instructions just let us know. Someone will undoubtedly be able to help. The Hase set I'm using for the Akagi is incredably thin and while the insttructions are fine, the parts are extreamly fragile.

GM, good history. I don't know much of the WW1 naval battles but should. There were a lot more than just Jutland.

retdfeuerwehr, that sounds fine. Did you want me to put down all three?

For those interested, the classic Revell Emden kit was probably the first Revell ship in 1/350.

Its a fine kit and for a long time was about all there was WW1.
