1/600

Chris,

I have asked my LHS owner to save any 1/600 Liners he may come across. That inheritance still has thousands of kits he has not yet inventoried.  I asked him specifically about the Airfix "France". He said that it is mine if he uncovers one.  I will let you know if he finds any that you don't have.

I decided against the PE davits, they are just too thin IMO to hold the lifeboats. I was going to use some of the parts and make a combo out of plastic and PE but I don't think it will look good, I am going to use the seats though. I painted and installed the funnels. All that remains are the railings, masts, lifeboats and rigging.

The proprietor of my LHS inherited thousands of unbuilt model kits about 1.5 years ago and he is still weeding through them.  I was just there an hour ago and he offered me an Airfix 1/600 RMS Mauretania, which I took.  It was free.  Would you like it?  If so, it is yours.  I also told him that if he has any others, I would take them.  Just let me know.

The model doesn't come with the platform on the forecastle so I added it. I finished most of the stairs and am doing all the railings I won't be able to get to once the lifeboat davits are installed and in my way. I also glued on the bridge area and props. I think I'm going to do the lifeboat davits next. I have PE parts for them so it should take awhile.

Added some PE stairs/ladders, doors, and decals to my 1/600 Queen Elizabeth. I will be putting more stairs and railings. I also started permanently gluing some of the decks on, and more test fitting.

Well I don't know if it was worth the time and effort but there are now tiny white 1/600 PE anchor chains on there. I held them for painting with a tweezers and some leftover pieces of the PE tree.

Bill, I think you might be thinking of The Normandie model as opposed to The France. I don't believe there is a resin France but I could be wrong.

 

The listing for the Airfix France on Oldmodelkits.com claims that the parts are molded in white and clear plastic.  Nowhere does it say that the kit is resin.

Chris, you are doing an exceptional job on this model!  It would make for an exceptional display should you wish to pursue a collection of liners in 1/600.

Bill, I think you might be thinking of The Normandie model as opposed to The France. I don't believe there is a resin France but I could be wrong.

A member here bought the France and sent me some pictures of the kit in the box.

His particular copy- the quality of the resin castings was really horrible.

EDIT: Correction, it is the Normandie.

There are two kits of the Mauretania and one kit of the France currently on Oldmodelkits.com.  As expected, the France is expensive.  There are also two kits of the Canberra and one of QE II on ebay.
