1/96 USS Kearsarge 1864. DONE!

WOW!  This ship looks AWESOME!!  The decking is so realistic, sails furled, everything just looks so accurate.  This kit has been on my "dream kits" list for so long but the prices at swap meets or on ebay are way out of my range.  I keep praying that Revell will reissue this kit someday.(hey, they reissued the 1/96 Spanish Galleon a few years ago so a guy can dream can't he)  Eagerly awaiting your next posting.

I didn't realize that Micro Mark sold after-market decking for ship kits.  I'll have to dig out my latest Micro Mark catalog.

Hard to believe how absolutely neat and clean your work is! I really wish I had your talent for this hobby but, alas, sloppiness is my bosom buddy in this game.

I'm very much looking forward to how you handle the shrouds and ratlines ... they'll be some of the biggest challenges for me - along with the running rigging of course.

Thanks Mike. This is my second sailing ship and I was hoping it would neat and clean. With my Constitution build I learned a lot. But the results were a good five foot model(looks great five feet away but no closer). This time my goal is to do better. 

   The deadeye/strops/lanyards are a real challenge for me. With the Constitution I thought the best way to do the deadeyes etc was to build the deadeye assemblies then add them to the ship. But after they were attached to the kit they tended to twist or become slack. Not the look I wanted.  Many modelers thread the deadeyes after they're already attached. I'll experiment with different approaches and choose the one that works the best. Part of the problem is the Kearsarge has a deadeye/strop/eye splice combo like the USS Constellation. Some kits use turnbuckles but I see no evidence the early Kearsarge used them. Stay tuned.deadeye:strop:loop by steve hawley, on Flickr" alt="" />

It's not flikr.  Your link has the "cs.finescale.com" appended to the beginning, and so it is searching this site for your photo, not Flikr.

Need to be sure to get the right link pasted.  If you click on his name (also highlighted as a link), and delete the cs.finescale.com, it will take you to his Flikr page.

Thanks Mike. I'm glad you're around to see it. I'd have this sucker done by now but my racing in FLA has delayed it's finish a bit. But I'm close enough to getting it done that I'm thinking of my next project. It will be something without so much scratchbuilding...I hope.

 Soon I'll be doing the dreaded rigging. Not looking forward to that.

 

 

When I rig anything more complicated than a simple sloop, I take my time.  I only rig for at most a half hour.  If there is nothing else but rigging left, I have another kit to work on after that.  I enforce that rule.  Makes it better for me, anyway.  Please do not rush the work.  I full-rigged ship should be considered a long time project.
