Floating USS Kidd off her Moorings Video
Posted by CapnMac82 on Saturday, May 11, 2024 12:24 AM

The Kidd Museum put out a video of the first part of getting her off her mooring blocks and moved a mile or so down river to the camel she'll ride when they tow her to Houma, LA for her yard period coming up.

Some cool detail video (if not too close up) of their interpretation of WWII Meas 22

For my 2¢ USS Kidd is the best of the three museum Fletchers preserved in the US.

A tour is very much stepping into 1946 or '47.

Thank you for posting.

Did she avoid FRAM or was she backdated?

Did she avoid FRAM

She was held in the Inactive Reserve Fleet is my understanding.  As a late-built ship, it was felt to be inappropriate to convert her to DDR or DE status.

There were enough Fletchers that a few retained a pole mast and kept all five turrets.  Despite how many wer efit with tripod masts and refit with Mk 22 3"50 replacing the 40mm mounts (and the top weight changes meant losing Mount 53).

There's actually a pretty good museum ashore for Kidd, and that will remain open while she's in the yard.

If you want to build a correct Kidd, from either the 350 scale Trumpeter Sullivans kit or the forthcoming 200 scale I Love Kit, then you need to invest in the new Anatomy of the Ship The Kidd, published by Osprey authored by Stefan Draminski.  It is hardbound, 336 pages and claims to have 600 scaled line drawings and 400 color 3D views (I have counted neither).   The book presents archive photos plus drawings and views of:

·         As launched 1943 with a 20mm tub on the bridge face

·         Summer 1944 in Measure 31/10d

·         April 1945 as she appeared at the of the Kamikaze attack which cased her to be withdrawn for repairs

·         September 1945 in the 14x 40mm gun tubes anti-Kamikaze fit

·         Summer 1951 as reactivated for the Korean war,

·         1957 with Hedgehogs, and lastly

·         1963 with MK32 torpedo over the stern launcher, as turned over as a museum ship.

Included are hull lines and frames.  There are hull plating drawings which will allow for the placement of the sonar array. The rigging diagram is extensive, but I would have liked to see the lines called out by purpose (stays, antenna, halyards, etc.).
It is more complete than the popular press Classic Warship or In Action type books.   It will be more expensive than them but presents much more information.  I got mine through Amazon.

Recommended for the detail-oriented modeler.

It's a good visit, but remember to leave time for USS Little Rock, too.  Only light cruiser museum ship in the world.

"Light cruisers today Four are preserved as museum ships: HMS Belfast in London, HMS Caroline in Belfast, USS Little Rock in Buffalo, New York, and Mikhail Kutuzov at Novorossiysk." https://www.google.com/search?q=Only+light+cruiser+museum+ship+in+the+world.&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-CA:IE-ContextMenu&ie=&oe=

Posting on the Kidd's IG page that they are removing the 40mm guns and are shipping them to the USS Texas' workshops for upkeep.  The crew at the Texas have the tooling and experience to do the job and it will cost less than the learning curve involved
