Testors going up in price
Posted by ModelMadness on Monday, May 2, 2022 6:50 AM

Just sharing this.  I watched a video that came out yesterday that says that all Testors paints are increasing their costs.  For whoever uses these, you got till May 16 before the price hike.  Those little square jars will be around $4 in the new price scheme.  Spray cans going to $11-$12.

Not sure if anyone has heard this already so just sharing for those who use the paint or use some of their paint.

Are you sure about your pricing? The square bottles are $1.89 now at Scale Hobbyiest so that means prices will double. I'm skeptical

Can you post a link to the video?  This doesn't sound right.

In the general atmosphere of increasing inflation, if this story is true, I am not really surprised to hear it.

Modelmadness, I think that I watched the same video and he said that the prices would go up 46% so those projected prices seem correct.  If true, then this would be the final nail in the coffin for Testors paints as far as hobbists are concerned, though I suspect that some true "Diehard Testors fans" would pay those prices.  I'm going to watch the three Hobby Lobbys in my immediate area and hopefully they'll go on clearance like their Model Master paint jars did.

I think I have precisely one bottle of Testors enamel right now in copper. That's it. They're already a rip off ! I seem to recall $.12 a bottle when I first started in this hobby, then I discovered Pactra enamels which to me were superior. When Pactra went out I just found other avenues not so much going back to Testors but a bottle here and there. So Testors enamel is no big force in my life to begin with.

It's good to learn the ways of a few brands and types of paint. Then when some brand goes away or a certain color isn't on the shelf you have other known means of getting the job done.

Testors are not my go to for enamels. But they are widely available, and enamel brands are getting harder and harder to find. For those of us who still prefer to use enamels, this is not good.

Sorry for being away everyone.  Here is the video that mentioned this

https://youtu.be/5GlNKW7BzBk

I went to two of my local Colpar Hobbytown's and talked to the owners and they also supported what is said in the video; they are going to raise their prices.

One owner said the reason is because they make the paint in Canada and the import regulations are causing the increase.  Not sure if that is true, but makes sense.

I also just called Rustoleum, short of saying yes, the lady at customer service did say that materials and inflation are "the cause" (her words) of the price increase that "is" coming.

Just saw another thread by MR TOM SCHRY titled TESTOR PAINT mentioning higher prices; especially on the spray cans.

Anyways, just for those who use the paints

Tojo72, I realize that the prices on everything have gone up, including paints in our hobby but recently I bought a Monogram 1930 Ford Cabriolet at a second hand store and inside was a bottle of Testors enamel paint still in the orginal packaging from a popular store in the midwest from years ago(Prange Way)and the price was $0.29.  I want to keep it in the packaging but I'm curious to see if the paint is still any good.

Hi Tom;

Chances are if it hasn't been frozen for a long time or exposed to ridiculous amounts of bright ,hot sunlight, it is okay to use. I have some bottles over thirty years old that have run the gamut and they are still useable!

Still even though the Testors paint has about twice the rate as general inflation, I do not find the paint costs are that big of a factor compared to the kit and aftermarket accessories are.

Indeed, gasoline here has gone from around $2 a gallon in 2020 to $4.65 ( $4.75 today) yesterday. The scary thing though is home heating oil.

Yup... pre Nov 2020, gas was under $2 a gallon here in AZ. now it's over $5 a gallon at the same local station. At least I'm no longer in DPRK with their prices.
