“The White
Star liner RMS Majestic made her maiden
voyage in 1890 and briefly held the westbound Atlantic speed record in 1891,”
writes Fred. “She also served as a troop ship during the Second Boer War. In
1902, a refit reduced her three masts to two. Mothballed in 1911, she was
briefly brought out of reserve to replace White Star’s ill-fated Titanic in 1912, but was scrapped in 1914.” Fred converted a
hull from Airfix’s 1/600 scale Mauretania: “The scale works out to be about 1/446,” Fred says. “Some parts, such
as the funnels, are from Revell’s 1/570 scale Titanic.” Fred also added masts, rigging, Gold Medal
photoetched metal, and lifeboat davits made of brass wire and tubing to model
the ship aboard which his great-grandmother and grandmother (then 6 months old)
immigrated to New York in 1906.
