“The kit is Academy’s 1/35 scale Coast Guard HTL-4 with much
scratchbuilding,” Bill says. “Most cockpit detail, engine area, control rods,
rotor mast detail were scratchbuilt, as the kit had very little to work with.
It’s a replica of the HTL-4s assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Westwind during its DEW line resupply mission in 1954.” Bill
painted the chopper Model Master FS15042 dark sea blue, installed seat belts
and gas-can straps of masking tape, and made control cables and avionics wiring
from monofilament. He added some homemade decals to the kit’s markings.
