“The (1979) Disney movie ‘The Black Hole’
was pretty forgettable, but the ship model that starred in it was a real gem.
It was highly detailed and spectacularly lit,” Mike says. He modified MPC’s
1/4225 scale USS Cygnus by cutting out
sections of the ship and replacing them with 1/32"-thick plastic pieces he
designed in CorelDraw, backlighting those places with 18 amber LEDs. He added
six more LEDs to the forward observation domes and control tower on the back;
the engines have four blue LEDs. Engraved black and chrome gold aluminum plates
detail other areas of the exterior. Mike painted with flat gray and various
shades of gloss yellow and bauhaus gold, and filled in unlit portions with flat
black.
