Daniel Elles
Longmont, Colorado

Having scratchbuilt an 1870s Gatling gun, Daniel notes, “It’s not to exact scale but I would estimate 1/12 scale would be very close. The actual size is 4.5" wide, 8.5" long, and 5" tall with 4"-diameter wheels.” Materials used include basswood, piano wire, aluminum tubing (for the barrels), galvanized sheet metal for the wheel treads, a short segment of PVC pipe for the round body, and HO scale track nails for most of the bolt heads. Daniel boiled basswood strips for about 30 minutes, then, while they were still wet, he wrapped them around a small coffee can and clamped them overnight to form the wheels.
