James sent in his Airfix 1/72 scale Curtiss P-40B Warhawk. He modeled it as one flown by 2nd Lt. George Welsh 47th Pursuit Squadron assigned to the 15th Pursuit Group on the Haleiwa Fighter Strip in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. Welsh shot down two Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers and one Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero fighter, with four kills total. James used an Eduard photo-etched metal detail set, added brake lines, antennae, and dropped flaps, and used aluminum tubing for 50-cal. machine guns, 30-cal. guns, and pitot tubing.
