Changing Email Adress in Profile

Hi! I'm trying to change the email address in my profile since I have a new one. Everytime I update the email ID field and submit the update, I get an error message that the ID is already in use. I still have my old email ID but I'm going to delete it soon and want to get notifications for topics to the new ID. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong!
