Hey Everyone,
Im spraying Vallejo model air and model color and am looking for a good black primer. Ive heard terrible things about vallejos primer pulling up etc. I have had good luck with Tamiya BUT...they dont offer it in black.
The reason I want black is I like the look of black based paint jobs...am i better off priming in gray and then spraying flat black acrylic paint?
I tried some krylon in a spray can and honestly it didnt go well. Went on too heavy and grainey...may have ruined the kit truth be told.
Perfection is having fun and relaxing...not building the perfect model.

This Gunze primer is one of the best out there. Haven't actually used their black yet, but their grey and white surfacers are awesome. You won't have problems with adhesion using their primers.

I've used Mig Ammo's Black "One Shot Primer" on a few builds and been very happy with it. I've also used basic flat black, both enamel and Tamiya Acrylic and been happy with that for a primer or black base coat as well.

Completely agree. MFS 1:1 with Mr Leveling Thinner sprays perfectly and lays down a nice satin finish. If you find seams that need filler, the MFS sands and feathers really well.

When I want to use a black undercoat, I use Army Painter "Base Colour Matt Black". It's rock-hard, and I use it to support a scuffing weathering technique.
Have a look in the Painting forum, too. You might find more suggestions there.

There have been several recent threads discussing Stynylrez with a wide range of experiences. Consistency does not seem to be one of its strong characteristics and it's more than just an occasional frozen bottle. Every order is a roll of the dice, IMO.
Agreed I won't take the chance for what it costs.

Just got finished using Stynylrez black which i sprayed. Ive had 2 bottles of black for awhile now. Sprayed easily and well except for dry tip. Layed on good and dried quick and pulled down fine on the model - detail still shows great But im brushing Model Color which goes on well until i thin the brush a small bit then the paint doesnt hold well. BUT, this may be bc no matter how small amount of water i use w/ the MC, its too much. I do like this primer. I have also used Plastikote spray which i also liked.

Badger Stynylrez and MiG One Shot are one and the same. I have not personally used it, but have heard you need a largish tip, and semi high pressure (30 psi) to get good results. my go to is rattle cans from Mr. Surfacer. I have Mr. Surfacer 1500 in black, and Mr. Surfacer Mahogany 1200, and Mr Surfacer 1000 in grey; as well as Tamiya white and Tamiya pink rattle cans in stock. When it comes to primer, I prefer the rattle can supply. The Mr. Surfacer stuff bites nice, lays smoothly, and makes for a great base for worn paint effects....
