A 40'-long ocean of 1/2" textured plastic is the setting for a Battle of Midway diorama featuring 22 Japanese and 18 American ships plus 70 aircraft of various scales. It was built by Karl Lau, who flew Corsairs from the USS Lexington during the war. Randy shot pictures of his friend’s massive forced-perspective display and writes, “Most of the diorama is based on 1/720 scale ships from various manufacturers. Aircraft scales varied from 1/72 scale (closest) to 1/350 scale (aircraft approaching the ships), with 1/720 scale planes right next to the ships or just clearing their decks.” The diorama was broken down to four sections for transport to the Pacific Air Museum in Pearl Harbor, where it celebrated the 70th anniversary of the battle.
