Gamera

I keep trying cars and getting horrible orange peel on them and putting them back in the box. One day I'll get a decent looking gloss finish- one day............

And there is the issue with model cars. Getting the smooth finish.

Maybe Joe can jump in on this with his process. But from what I know-- you need to sand the primer coat (if used), the color coat, and then the clear coat, again, if used. Then polish. There are polishing kits for this that include the sanding cloths. It takes the guesswork out of it and you will end up with glass smooth finishes.

Or --the other way is to lay on a heavy layer of paint to bring out the gloss. But-- you will almost always get something in the paint that will need to be sanded, and then polished.

What says you, Joe?

Hey! That looks just like my first car! LOL, LOL.

I have folks accuse me of being around when these were here. Maybe my Grandparents, Hmmm? I love the sheer fun in building this type of auto. Any plastic for Floors and Firewalls gets replaced with Basswood.

Hey! Good question, If they face planted against a tree, who did they sue. What? no Seatbelts? Or airbags, except the wind in yer face! Thirty miles an hour? You are out of your mind!

About that time or a little earlier the Fiat Mephistophle Clocked 146 in the straight mile! Unbelieveable, right?

I tend to use alot of Donn Yosts ideas in my airbrushing these days and that's definitely a step in the right direction picking up his DVD's. Dude's got alot of good advice.

You're working on one of these?

Boxart Model T 1913 Speedster 24026 ICM

That should be a fun build. Got a thread for it?

Hey Joe, yes, that is the one. I thought it would be an easy build, and in many ways it is. But, I am a bit rusty with car builds. Particlulary, in getting the finish I want. I spent a lot of time trying to get what I wanted. Too much time if you ask me.

This is my first car model in over, jeez, 40 years. Man, I can't believe it's been that long. I seem to be migrating towards car models again. I have picked up several kits over the last few years. Heck, I just ordered some of Donn Yosts DVDs too.

No I didn't start a thread. I have been documenting it, so I could. I'd say I am near 2/3rds done with the model.

Gamera

Hope things calm down and you can get back to this Bakster. Love the idea and really want to see where you're going with it.

Hey thanks, Cliff. That makes two of us.

Just a "bump" to keep this project from falling to page Two .

( I had a few spare parts left over from another project .... you can have em...)

You will just have to imagine the skeletal images I posted.

Thanks for not giving up on a me, Timmy.

Yeah. I tried posting a skeleton image early on in this thread. They have a block on skeletons or something. I was bummed because he was to be my mascot for this build.

Dang it, Timmy, here I thought Dr Doom had resurfaced and it's just a "bump."  Sigh.

Now that cracks me up, Capn. This is the first time I laughed in days.

Dr Doom says this: If you saw what I endured this weekend you'd say, Dang, that poor basxxxx really IS Dr Doom. The onslaught keeps coming.

One of these days the worm has to turn, and Dr Doom will be back, in his full Bullion glory. I have not given up on this project; I have some bullion to mine. Tongue Tied

Thanks for the laugh, I miss you guys.

Maybe still recovering from the lost but not really lost oil filter detail part? Or maybe it's the embarrassment, shame, and public humiliation of it all?

Lol. You know Greg, that thread was missing a bone headed tale of Greg. There must be some sort of bone headed thing you did. Perhaps, your list is too long? Lol.Wink

Gamera

Bakster: Did you have to put her away for awhile? I hope everything is okay there on the gold truck front. I'm really jonesing for an update!

Hey Cliff, sorry buddy, yeah... the project is sidelined. Life has been too hectic. Keeping the glue flowing in my veins, I started an out of the box build. Well, mostly it is. There will always be some mods. I wanted to work on something less demanding, so I started an ICM Model T 1913 Speedster. The kit is nicely molded and for the most part, well designed. I am enjoying the break from this project. Once this is done, I will go back to working on the Bullion Express, hopefully. That's if things don't get worse.

About the lanterns not matching exactly, I am only starting to learn in my own modeling that I try to model perfection but real life isn't perfect

Thats true

Been waiting with bated breath to see the lanterns lit up. They look great, even if I have to imagine the in-person look. YesYes

I shall assume the lanterns were made by hand, not mass-produced. No worries.

I was just looking at something and thought I might mention this. On the image below while looking at the bottom of the piece--notice how granular the finish looks. I did not sand, nor did I coat the bottom with CA. Being the bottom, it won't get seen, and being the attach point-- I didn't waste my time. Everthing above that has a nice smooth finish, the CA setting the stage for that. I have to say... I kind of like that granular look because it looks like something that was cast using a sand mold and that it was not polished.

Just musing. Wink

Thanks Guys.

The main issue is with the crown of the lanterns. One is rounder than the other and it is a result of my trying to fix a misaligned mold join. But what the hey-- it is what it is. Wink

They look pretty awesome to me!!!

In place I'm not sure I'd notice the differences without you pointing them out to me.

Hmm, dissimmilar lamps?  Perhaps a slight difference in tone/finish might suggest having to get a replacement from the local equivalent of the General Store.

Augers make my rane get all wobbly, and inclined plane spiraling around a cone is a simple concept--just hard to execute in practice Smile

So, having a starting point to work from will be a considerale advantage.

Mind, I can't ut imagine a bit of thin brass sheet to follow the base, which could have an eroded, worn, torn edge--but, back to the practical aspect os how to whittle such a thing out . . .
