Monogram Mafia
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Sunday, February 6, 2011 12:28 AM

Due to the name coined by our own DoogsATX,  I'm checking on a the interest level of a Monogram Group Build. Build any two (2) Classic Monogram kit s(or Revell re-releases of them), any subject, any era, any scale, and get "made"... Crossovers, WIPs OK as long as they aren't over 50% compete...  I say two because, face it... Start date, any time from right now to 31 March, completion date, six months from your start time.. Start-time cut off is 31 March... You wanna piece of the action, you gotta be committed to "This Thing of Ours"...  If you can't swing two Monogram kits in six months, "den fuggedaboudit"... You ain't what we're lookin' for... Ya gotta be an "earner" if ya wanna get "made"...

Successful completion means you're "made" in the Monogram Mafia..

I'm takin' my badge now,  though... I figure I've got enough Monogram kits under my belt to have earned it already.. Any youse gotta problem wit' dat?

I haven't seen what they look like, but I suppose so if they have helmets and no mask. I'm planning a pair of T-6s. These will be copies of two that we have based at my airport, that are two of the four "Screamin Rebels" airshow team. They do wear regular military style flight suits with custom painted helmets.

Here's the team. Already built the one in back, in exchange for a ride!

The one up front and the grey/yellow are the ones planned, might just pick up some more and do all four, but then I need four pilots!

Do older Revell (pre-Revelogram merger) kits count, or only proper Monogram kits?

i'd already be done if this started 6 months ago... Whistling

The Revell kits are fine, as long as they are ex-Monogram kits... There's some Revell kits that can get confused as ex-Monogram, like the Revell 1/48 Spitfire Mk II and Bf 109G... Neither of those would qualify, since they were initially Revell kits from the late 70s, when Revell wanted to get some of Monogram's 1/48th scale market.....  The Spit and Messerschmitt kits that are Monogram are the Me 109E and Spitfire Mk IX... I dunno if Revell has re-released those though...

It's like the 1/48th  B-17s... The 1/48 Revell B-17G is an Ex-Mongram kit and would qualify, the 1/48 Revell B-17F isn't, and would not..

If you have any questions as to your Revell kit being a "Valid" Monogram kit, just ask and tell ya if it is or not....

Well, they have Korean War-era HGU helmets, no visors, but they DO have O-masks, they're just not wearing them.  They're sorta hanging at the throat.. Easy enough to shave off though..

You COULD use the T-6 pilot figure, and just add the helmet-heads from the Huey Hog kit... They're wearing visored SPH helmets with boom mics... If you have the Huey pilots, they can be converted to T-6 crew fairly easily, although one has a ose that could cause a fit issue...  They're not wearing Mae Wests either, but the F-80 pilots are..

I get a pic or two posted in a bit of the figures.. Be easier for you to decide then..

Actually I was thinking the Revell kits when Revell and Monogram were competitors, like the P-26 I'm finishing up. Thats ok though, I've got plenty of pure bred Monogram kits to go with, I've had my eye on a P-36 for awhile.

You talking about the 1/72 scale Pea-Shooter? That's a 1967 Revell kit...

Id like to hop in, but I'm a little confused about the start date/finishing time....could you explain that a little more Hans?  Not to mention, I probably wont be allowed access to my stash until the later parts of March....and I need to snoop through the boxes to figure out which are actually Monogram and not a Revell kit.

Is it just "as soon as you can, get 2 Monogram kits finished within 6 months of your start date"  ?

Hey Owl...I had to read it twice..lol...You can start today but must start by March 31st and can take 6 months to complete them. My question is, shouldn`t we have a firm start date just so everyone finishes up around the same time? AND, are we limited to just 2 builds or can we build as many as we can?

Sorry about any confusion... Yeah, you can start right away, but you gotta be rolling NLT 31 March...  As for the finish-time, I gues it would be easier if we had a deadline, so let's call the finish date 30 SEP 2011... That's six months from the start deadline..

As for the number, knock yourself out, but ya gotta do two, minimum... However, if you're a diorama builder, and you get both kits on one diorama, that'll count....

That is the one, although it is stamped 1982, quite some time later than the Monogram interwar kits which were done in the late 60s. Modified mold or old age? Clown  It is just waiting for rigging, so it wouldn't go for this anyway.

The only reason I brought up Revell is Revell and Monogram from that earlier period are often kind of lumped together as Revellogram since the merger. I wasn't sure if this was the Monogram Mafia because that sounded better than the Monogram (and Revell) Mafia or if it was the pure Monogram build which you have clarified that it is.

Did Monogram do any WW1 kits or are all of the Revell of Germany kits available now originally Revell kits?

I'll most likely start with a P-36 towards the end of the month, I'll figure out #2 as I go.

Here's the F-80 pilot. The right arm is molded separately. I can cast you as many as you need...

Monogram bought the molds and released three of the old Aurora WW1 kits in the 70s; The Sopwith Camel, Fokker D VII, and SE5A, which they felt were the most accurate of the Aurora kits,.. Revell-Germany has re-released the ex-Aurora Fokker Dr 1, but it was never released in a Monogram box, AFAIK, so the first three are the only Monogram WW1 kits that I know about...

Not familiar with Am F-4s or Encore Deuces.. Unless you mean the Monogram F-4C/D or F-4J and M-34 Duece? Revell released the 1966 Monogram M34, but I'm not sure exactly when that happedned, only that it was post-1970.  Monogram re-released the 66 kit in the 70s, and it was one that Shep Paine did a Korean War "Mail-Call" dio with..  I don't know if AM (Accurate Miniatures?) released a copy of the Monogram Phantom.. Is this a kit you have on-hand (or are you just tryin' to sharp-shoot me)?Wink

Same goes for the Deuce.. Do you have one on-hand? I don't know about  an "Encore" 2 1/2 ton M-34s, none of my sources list anything like it, only the Monogram and Revell kits shows up...

I'm not a jet guy, but I do have a Mongram 1/48th F-4J Phantom (The Cunningham/Driscoll "Showtime 100" kit) on-hand... Can you post a picture of some of the sprues so I can compare it?

The Huey Hog pilots were actually the first thing that came to mind. What you guys are showing me can be easily modified. They don't really have to be perfect. Ultimately, they're gonna end up hanging from the ceiling at my airport.

PMs comin! Much appreciated!

Hey Hans, you said on the first post " any subject, any era, any scale".

Could you please define a little, especially "subject", thanks!

Only thing about the Hog pilots is they probably gonna need their legs modified, and the one guy is gonna need that arm changed out.. The T-6 'pit is narrow! If needed, the F-80 pilot's helmet can get a boom mic added pretty easily too...

Sure.. "Subject" in this case means "Genre" or "Category".. Monogram Aircraft (military or civilian), Armored Vehicles & Tanks, Cars (Show and Theme-cars too, like the "Red Baron" or "Cop-Out" funnycar), Trucks (military or civilian), Ships, Figures, (Real) Spacecraft (Like the Apollo stuff), and Sci-Fi subjects like the "Classic" Battlestar Galactica Viper and Cylon Raider)...

Godfather,

The Accurate Miniatures 1/72 F-4's are from the original Monogram molds from the mid-80's, which were a scaled down version of their 48th scale brethren. I have one of the original ones, the J, kit #5440, copyright 1985. The Monogram 1/72 C/D came out at the same time.

I think I confused everyone about the Deuce; I actually meant the Encore re-release of the Monogram F-102 in 1/48 scale. It's in the Squadron catalog, and is kinda pricey (they included some resin goodies), but then again, the original has been OOP for a long time.

Thanks Hans, I think I might pop in with either 1/48 F-14 Tomcat, or 1/48 F-15C Eagle, and also to make it interesting, I have been itching to get started on this:

An original release Corvette ZR-1 released in 1989 1/24th scale, Special detailing package that includes engine wiring and plumbing.

I'm glad this is going to be an interesting and diverse GB, Monogram has ALWAYS been my favorite model company.Toast

Gotcha.. I'm retired from the Army, so "Deuce" automatically meant "Deuce & a half" to me, lol...

If the sprues from the AM Phantom are Monogram, then I reckon it'll fly, no pun intended..

Got mixed feelings about the Encore F-102... The idea is to show what can be done with Monogram kits with either scratch-building the details, or using some AM parts...  The Encore kit comes with resin parts, but I don't know how much of the kit is Monogram and how much is added-on after the fact... Since there's no rule against  AM parts, it kinda falls within the build parameters, even though the company added the parts..  Lemme think on that one an hour or so, see what I can find in the way of a review....  I'll have an answer for ya NLT 1630 Central Time...

I've got 25 finished Monogram kits that survive out of the at least 100 or more I've built over the last 30 years, do I need to wait on my badge before displaying it?Angel

Also, CONGRATULATIONS Hans on passing the 10,000 post mark!!!! My hat's off to you sir!!Bow Down
