I have just used MRP for the first time. Deffinetly does not need anything added, sprays lovely just as is. I got pretty good coverage with one coat, but gave it a second. One thing i have noti8ced and that its very much like Alclad in that it shows every mark and scratch. You need to make sure the surfice is well prepared before useing it.

 

Good to know!  I had to order from overseas so I bought a bunch of colors to justify the shipping.  They seemed to offer colors that are hard to get (Bronze Green, Dull Dark Green, etc.) Looking forward to trying them!

Indeed it is. I've had it in the stash for months. 

Its a lovely looking kit in the box and I've been thinking about building it since it arrived in the mail.

I haven't chosen a scheme yet, but both look cool. :)

I think I'll start it this weekend.

I have only found 2 places in the UK that has them and one of those (the cheaper one of course) doesn't have the complete range. I did a comparison with my current range, Xtracolour, checking all of the German aircraft and armour paints, and MRP has them all plus a few extra. I am going to do a couple more test builds, but i am thinking of switching over completly to that for all my German subjects at least.

Steve, your suggested top colours look spot on to me.   I'm thinking the box art of the fw 109D might be fictitious, or did the Luftwaffe revert back to early paint colours in 44-45?  Maybe paint shortages would explain it?

I think Monogram have just gone for a generic look. If it was me, i would find a profile i liked and do that.

What type of paint is MRP - acrylic, enamel, lacquer?

Its an Acrylic lacquer.

Mr. Paint is great stuff. And yes, you can absolutely mix with other brands, and can use Gunze/GSI Creos Mr. Levelling Thinner with it (so I assume also Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, though I have not done so).

Last night, actually, I was shading an A-36 with MRP Olive Drab and some Tamiya Desert Yellow, then darkening with MRP mixed with Tamiya RAF Dark Green and Black. Absolutely no issues.

No, i only got it recently and have only just used it. I tend not to try mixing paint brands, but i might give that a try as i need to lighten it a bit for fading and only have the 3 camo colours.

Thanks for the heads up BD, i was going to do some fading with my enamel paints, but now i know what to do.

I've thinned it with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, it works perfectly.

Hello all,

I finally got some free time to build the first kit for the GB. I must say thus far everyone has produced some great looking builds. This is my first AirFix kit and I did encounter a few fit issues but nothing a little sanding could not cure.

At this point I am going to let the glue dry for a couple of hours, and then putty, sand and put on a primer coat. I plan on doing the winter camo scheme once I get to that point.

Nice start Hunter! Looks like the kit has some pretty good detail. I will say I believe the landing gear bay should be RLM02 (looks like RLM66, same as cockpit?) but I may be wrong, if so hopefully someone can correct me

Looking forward to seeing that winter camo scheme. Those are always fun to tackle. Looks like it's the same "Red 2" that I did a while back, but hard to tell from the box art pic.

Rooster - I went back and looked at my paint conversion chart and Hunbrol #245 is Tamiya XF63 German Grey. I sure hope the chart is right LOL. I checked three different charts online and all of them said XF63. If not I will be cutting the seams to take it apart to repaint. And you are correct, it is a "Red 2"

Seeing your tribute quote, Is this the month that the UK puts down all those red poppys to remember the fallen during WWI and WWII? I think that is such an excellent way to pay respect and remember those who paid the ultimate price. I have seen photos of this and it a beautiful scene.

That looks great too Rooster. I've got that kit earmarked for a Hungarian F-8. I might grab anothery for the winter scheme I think.

If your talking about that large display that was out side the Tower of London a couple of years back, that was a one off. Though the display was broken up and sent to different parts of the country. And this year tehre aresmaller displays around the country.

But yes, November is when we have the rememberance for the fallen, the 11th of course being rememberance day but the main rememberance parades are on the closest Sunday, so this year on the 12th.

Here too in Canada, the 11th of Novemeber is Rememberance Day.  The red poppy is a huge symbol at this time, many people will wear one over their heart in the two weeks leading up to said date.  Though it was a Canadian that wrote the poem 'In Flanders Fields' back in 1915, introducing the poppy, it would be America that would be the first to officially adopt it as a symbol of the fallen.

The problem here in the States is that we have both Memorial day and Veterans day. And most people are not clear on their true meanings. Veterans Day is for the living, the vets who have served to honor thier service, and we remember the fallen as well, but it's primarily for the living. Memorial day, which everyone treats as remembering everyone who is gone, is actually to remember those who have given the ulitmate sacrifice for our freedoms, so we remember. Most of the time these to days are blurred together and muddied up with one thing or another. The important thing for us is to 'remember' and understand what was given by them for us.

Take it easy on me...still learning how to properly paint figures LOL!

Last one....the instructions call for #246 Matt Sea Grey (RLM 75) for the bottom of the aircraft. According to my chart conversion that would be Tamiya XF22 RLM Grey. Would that be correct? Thank you for your input.

Nice work so far. I do believe the gear bays should be RLM 02 (a lighter version of the Tamiya RLM Gray. a 1:1 RLM Gray and Khaki [XF-49] should get you there).

As for the main colors, they are the standard RLM 74/75/76 scheme that the Fw-190s wore at that time. So the lichtblau on the bottom, and the top should be gray violet (the lighter color) and gray green. Mr. Paint and Gunze make these colors straight outof the bottle, as does Model Master (though I've heard they're shutting down their line of military colors).

For the top I'd use RLM 70, the black green. For the underside, Tamiya doesn’t make an RLM 75 equivalent. You would have to mix it or if you want to stay with acrylic, Testers makes a Model Master acrylic RLM 75. You would be looking for grey violet.

BTW, figures are hard to paint in 1/72 scale so don’t expect perfection.

Hunter good question on the colours, as the instructions do not follow standard factory schemes as laid out for the Luftwaffe.  Assuming they are correct, then I guess this aircraft, or the whole unit were an exception to the rule?
