I feel ready to finish this GB as the Midway has sailed into the completion harbor over at American Flag etc.

I spent this afternoon getting the boxes and model out and organizing myself.

I follow Rob44 in his excellent build; mine is the earlier version of Compass Rose in the story.

Here's a photo on Sackville. Can anyone identify the vertical objects on top of the depth charges? They come in the kit and in the Eduard PE set, and I've found photos of them onboard corvettes as early as 1942, but I would like to know what they are.

Smoke generators maybe?

Bill, smoke generators would be my guess. Though a differant design, they do have a similar apperance to the ones on the German S-100.

Bish is exactly right, they are M1 smoke floats.

I really look forward to your modification of the revelle kit to the original type corvette described in "The Cruel Sea". I think it will be a lot of work, but I am sure very satisfying!

If I might the Eduards railing and ship modifcation PE sets are great, you do not need the armorment one in my opnion, the L'Arsenal dinghys, decck gun and depth carge racks are great.

I do have an extra Eduards PE railing set that I would send to you if interested. Send me a private message.

Time to bring this GB back to the top of the list 

im off and running with my KGV build. Working tonight on supporting the hull for a waterline model. This one will be, as usual lately, an out of box build. My only adders will be what i have around the house already As I have more time than anything else haha

Now i need to go through and check out BB's KGV for pointers. I remember check'n it out months ago and noting I needed to follow along for future reference!

Yeah Chris, that deck need some supporting. Good start.

And here is KGV nestled down in some foam for the winter haha

All the portholes are cut out. next some paint on the hull and then I can mount the deck and start on the superstructure. I have about 8 coats of gesso on the foam right now. It's got a nice ripple to it that I think goes along with the easy swells I've portrayed. My current thought is to have the anchors coming up like she's about to get underway. We'll see how that goes.

edit- i got the hyperlink to work in the past so it showed just a short title but no go today i guess.

So a couple of you guys have built the Tamiya KGV and you other swabbies have probably seen something similar. Could you share how you dealt with these ejector pin marks? The bottom ones will be covered completely by the pom poms(i think that's what this tub is). The top ones are really visible though. The square boxes on the laft and right are 9mm apart outside to outside for reference.

I generally will do a light scrape with a chisel blade, followed by a light sand if they are really shallow.  Deeper ones will require filler.  I like PPP for ease of sanding. 

I'm using PE so I didn't mess with it. 

Otherwise, I'd do the same as GH

 I'm having trouble finding the right colors for KGV. Hoping some of what you guys have researched could help me out. Any place that really helped you get the color choice nailed down?

That was a hard one. I (am) mixing my onw. The refrence material on the subject is difficult to pin down. I do know Lifecolor makes a RN Western and Eastern approches sets. I didn't see them until I had already painted quite a bit.

They are't hard to work with either. Seem to spray well but haven't tried to bruch them yet.

Another paint brand that does Naval paints is Hataka - but can't comment on how accurate.

MC I'm going down the mixing road myself. those kits are hard to get ahold of without paying more than they cost for shipping 

spent some time looking at scale colors. Think I'm going to try those at the very least. I went ahead and ordered a few colors to try. https://scalecolors.com/
they have the basic royal navy colors. They did have a new set for the cruise ships and a couple of those gray blues look good. I'll post up some spoon samples when they arrive.

Edit- man I'm still going over all the references to tones and this is my favorite run on sentence that runs me in circles lol

"Observation No.1 names 507A, as do No's 63 and 65. Observation No. 61 names M.S.4. and 507C. None of the observations state B5 was on KGV, but HMS Anson is noted as having the 507A substituted for MS1, from which the other 3 shades were the same. Furthermore, the summary table of the report lists ships without B5 as "No B5" in that box - for KGV it says "N.K.""

Tonight was all about mixing colors. I got in my ScaleColors paints. Anxious to try them out. They had a few of the Royal Navy colors so this is half ScaleColors and half Vallejo right now. This is one of the original color photos from the Imperial War museum that I'm working from along with the Sovereign Hobbies work on Britmodeller as well.

And here's my color pallet. I've circled what I think are my current choices. The MS4 is the toughest as they show color swatches that are more grey or more brown(like in pic above) so it may be my artistic choice as to how I proceed. After walking away for awhile and then looking again I may add a touch or gray tomorrow and see if I like it. Apparently the lighting and the colors next to it is what they say causes the different tones. Take a look and let me know if you guys would go a different direction or not.

Some of the alternate colors I'm going to try and use to do some shading as I go along. Should be a fun weekend!

So I really like the 1942 camo. Of course the ship is 1945, so it's a good thing I'm not building for accuracy. Here's the profile shot

Of course they are out of stock everywhere. I did find the AK colors but in Europe so I could paint in a few months if I want to pay for shipping. Instead I spent some more time mixing. Here's my color pallet now sprayed over white primer preshaded in grimy black for hull weld lines. figured might as well see how well the paint covers and if there is anything to be done with some variation in the colors.

left to right they are 507C, B5, MS4, 507A

the Vallejo Model Color mix as of now is:

507C 3:1 white to Light Grey

B5 10:1 Azure to Dark Sea Grey

MS4 10:1 Deck Tan to Light Grey

507A Lufwaffe Uniform WWII

You can just barely make out the preshading in a few spots. That's the iphone there as you can see most of it with the naked eye, except the B5 which for some reason covers the best. Will have to be careful with that one. If I can get a decent pic I'll post it for opinions. I'm on the fence about how the preshading looks and may try something different.

Now if only i could find some air brush thinner  went everywhere today and nobody had it. Maybe this will still be on hold as Amazon wants $20 for a bottle of the vallejo stuff. Distilled water here i come. Dare i risk it having not tried it before?

That looks really close Chris. The British Eastern Approaches camo is hard to match.

Painting the superstructure and the funnels in that scheme are tough on the KGV class. Ask me how I know.

Jack that's a handy table! The commentary in that post is even better though. I will add I completely agree with the guy from Sovereign - Vallejo is smoking weed when they define their colors. I bought the intermediate blue and it is seriously a dark grey! Near as I can tell Vallejo has also changed their numbering compared to the color in the bottle over the years. Some of the colors don't match what the bottle says anymore so I go to the hobby store, shake up the bottle from the rack, then open it and see what it really looks like, then swear about what am I going to do now cause this silly numbering system on the rack makes no sense

ModelCrazy you've confirmed that I need to keep all the superstructure pieces seperate until final assembly :-) I was honestly thining of building this one in pieces since it seems like everything is independent until you get to the final rigging. I even think I can rig both masts before final assembly. Then all I have left is the wires between masts. What direction did you take?
