I didn't know they made ship masks. I guess if they make a wood deck they should be able to make masks. Looks good Scott.

John, I hope you have a great vacation weekend.

Ben: Dang! That Kingfisher turned out so good! Good luck with the replacement!

John: Have a nice vacation and see you when you get back. Those teeny sailors are going to look good.

Scott: Those masks look neat! Much easier than trying to measure and cut them by hand. Is it possible though to take a pen and just write the numbers on the mask if they're confusing?

I believe I finally have something worth posting... my completed OSU2 Kingfisher aircraft. This will be my third attempt at getting something accurate and period correct for the early 41 USS Arizona. My first build was the kit planes which looked awful. Second attempt was the Trumpeter planes but I painted them too dark. I also was looking at them through the photos and thought some of my detailing was a little out of scale. Everything else you should already know if reading the whole string.

Actual aircraft from USS Arizona:

Image

Color I am going for on my planes:

Image

Remember that the Arizona aircraft are suppose to be Non-specular Blue-Gray (ACUS 06) over Non-specular Light Gray (ACUS 05) bottom (almost white); only one roundel insignia on top of the left wing and below the right wing; no stripes on the tail.

Once again I added the antenna to the left front corner in front of the canopy; the left wing sensor probe; and added new two piece PE pontoon struts. I sourced them from spare Eduard PE that I modified to fit the aircraft.

Here are the kits pontoon struts:

Image

This is my replacement struts:

And here are the finished little floaty things which are smaller than a US Quarter:

Image

I am calling them DONE and now making final presiding before the spraying of the hull and superstructure.

Thanks everyone for your kind words regarding the little floaty thingys.

I am really taking my time and trying to be as authentic as possible to the early 1941 ship.  I am still working some very small issues I will bring up later during the build up of the hull and superstructure.

Rest assured that I have not pooped out of the GB and hope to have something to show of the hull and base sometime soon.

Other than that, I am really enjoying the builds going on here... carriers, battleships, and deck mask, oh my!..... (lions, tigers, and bears).

Received my eduard PE detail set for the North Carolina today. Multiple frets in this kit. Including hatch door, cranes, railings, you name it. Going to be interesting for sure. Time to test my skills!

Yep, it's a big set. The doors on the kit are pretty good, unless you're going to show some open I would forgo replaceing them. Just my 2 cents I would replace the hatches, cranes, cats and everything else though. The catapults are quite the fiddly setup, this is where a PE bender comes in handy, but a wide pair of tweezers will also work.

I'll get back on my NC after I reach a certian point on the Akagi

MC It's hard to say which of your builds I want to see more of! I have the NC so that one may win out on the watch list for selfish reasons. I'm saving for those Vegas tickets tho Yeah

Thanks, I guess I can be entertaining since I'm not building anything! My LCT is still sitting there, I've done some work but nothing compared with what you guys are doing. I really need to post some photos but I'm a little embarassed with how little I've gotten done.

Mongoose: I can empathize with what your saying concerning the level of work and rework, the lessons learned, but all I can say it that is one terrific looking carrier in the day or night!

Thanks for sharing the build process with all of us. While most of us do not add another dimension like electronics to our kits, we sure can appreciate them.

NICE WORK!

Wow! Can't believe all of the amazing work that was done while I was gone!

My vacation was hot one but loads of fun. 1st cut hay was just finishing up on the family farm so I got to spend time with all my extended family in the trucks, tractors and around the barnyard. There is nothing like eating a home cooked dinner off the tailgate of a pickup in the field.

More steady progress today. Put a few decals on the fore and aft flight deck sections while i was waiting on other stuff to dry. I bought the Starfighter decals...they don't fit! While they're made for the Tamiya kit the ones around the blast deflectors didn't match any of the shapes. I cut those apart and stitched something together. Here's what the elevators look like for reference as these weren't even close. Even if I'd sanded off the existing details they come up short by 1/16". I would not recommend these to anyone.

So, time for the save...maybe. I decided to start them at the edge of the ship and work inward. Then break them up on the inside edge of the elevator where the aircraft would go over and over them slowwly wiping them out. Definitely going to take some weathering, maybe very focused to reflect A/C travel paths. What do you think, workable?

mounted the island. There's a little torque on it from 130 fibres so I decided 2 screws would ensure it doesn't pop free in the future.

and finally put my figures in and lit it up!

Actually have to travel for work this week. Gonna help a buddy with his clear coat issues while I'm in North Carolina. Back next weekend with more progress!

That's surprising Chris, Starfighter decals are usually quite nice. I like the island all lit up. Crew sure adds life to a build.

The lighting and crew really bring the island to life Chris. I will be right behind you with progress on my figures. These tiny figures have really been bogging me down, been taking frequent breaks to keep from getting too frustrated.

Speaking of figures, I need to make up hundreds of them for the flight deck. Do you guys have any ideas of a good way to make up some guys standing at attention? See the pic below

my initial thought is that they don't have to be detailed, but not sure just a 'peg' would be enough? Once i placed figures in the island it became obvious how many i might need to spell the equation lol throw some ideas my way.

Chris, take a look at Northstar, They have several nationalities at attention and in that scale it's easy to make some swabies by just painting them white. That many will run you some bucks though, it will from anyone. The only beef I have with Northstar is their surcharge for PayPay and the extreamly long ship time. Goint through them is lees expensive that some of the sellers on eBay though.

How about using strip styrene for the inner figures and real figures for the outer row or two

I would be very interested to see how that would turn out if Chris decides to go for it.

yes a real possibility. I'm also on a Fb page for 1/350 and 1/400 ships and there i just learned that tamiya makes a group of 144 'at attention'  sailors(plus some other poses). They have just a little bit of depth to them. Another suggetion i got was matchsticks that, if i used them, i would combine with the idea to do the inner ones in styrene. Wonderful ideas i can combine to a solution I believe.

I better go sketch out the size and see how many I Need to do the outline...
