Ships of the German Flag GB 2020

Chris, to the best of my knowlage except for bow/stern waves and the black white & stripes on the Bismarck I don't believe the Germans used white in there camo. I'm sure with some thought I could come up with other examples. I believe the color you would be looking for is Grauweiss (Grey White). I don't think the Tirpitz in it's splinter camo used white either. The bow and stern of that scheme looks to be Grauweiss as well.

I could be wrong though.

I have Volume 1 & 2 on German Naval Camouflage from 1939-1945 and Steve you are correct about the camo schemes.  They only used white paint for bow/stern waves.  Tirpitz did have white paint stripes beneath the ladders of A and D turret so the crew could find their way in darkness and bad weather.  The white stripe was applied in the May-June 1941 refit but removed sometime before 23 September 1941 while getting ready for operations against the Soviet Navy.

Looks good there Steve. Drilling those holes is the one thing i wish i had done on mine.

Seriously! Revell didn't make a sight for it? I'm glad there are AM creators that think of such things. The Pontos set for the Bismarck is around £175, pricy but contains probably everything missing from the kit.

Steve, I like that tube idea, like installing a pressure hull behind the limber holes on a sub.

Just seen the post in the other thread of the GB being moved here.  Repeat, I would like to enter the ICM Kronprinz  1/350 scale ship in the group build.  Along with the kit I have two PE sets, one from White Ensign and the other from Gold Metal Model, along with metal barrels from RB models.  There most likely will be the odd and end PE added to enhance detail I believe will need enhancing. 

I should be able to start the build sometime in September once I clear the dry dock of another build.

I'm really looking forward to your build Marcus. I have the Konig in the stash but haven't purchased the PE or barrels yet. I purchased turrets from Micro Master for the Dreadnought and they look great. Here are some turrets for the Konig class.

This makes it official, I started a base for the Tirpitz, so my build order is a changing! Once I got the old train tunnel mountain out it just called Norwegian Fjord and I got started 

Here's the layout

grabbed some wood at home depot and made a base. Used MDF board to lift the mountain up. I hit the front edge with the oscillating sander and put an angle on it so the water will lap up against the shore at different points.

finished Trondheim Fjord! The center area will have a stream running down the cliff face shortly.

A small update but well worth the effort.

Using the fold out plans from the Kagero book, I was able to locate and drill out the last holes at the bow section needed on this boat. I then used my Chopper to slice little tiny frames and glue them on. I REALLY like the Chopper by the way, it has proven to be well worth the cost.

And finally I glued the hull halves together, although I am now wishing that I hadn't. I'm planning to drill out the forward part of the torpedo tube hatches and add tubing behind them to add depth and to locate one of the torpedos inside. It probably would have been immensely easier to drill these with the hull seperated...

This has been a major exercise in patience during the two last evenings. I will start on the conning tower to take a break from the hand drilling.

So to be clear, a conning tower on a submarine is a pressurized cylinder separated from the main pressure hull by a trunk. It would be a place where torpedo attacks could be plotted while submerged, using an attack periscope.

It sits directly above the main pressure hull.

Both it and the main pressure hull are enclosed within a light boat structure,

The conning tower is enclosed in a fairing generally referred to as a "sail".

Type 2s didn't have a conning tower at all. There was a sail, which had a open bridge on the top, but the pressure hull access was through a hatch at the base of it.

USN submarines in WW2 often used the term "fairwater" for every thing outside of the pressure hull from the waterline at positive bouyancy; up.

I know the feeling. 10 days in and i am still working on the port side of my hull, have not even looked at the starborad side.

Thanks mongoose, Steve and Bish. Yea it’s tedious and boring and it’s safer to use a hand held drill than a powered one, some of the holes are just too tiny. Changing gears working on the conning tower will give me a break from the monotony of drilling.

Hey Guys I need some advice - flags, the bane of my existence! I'll ruin 6 or 7 it seems like before getting something reasonable for my model. Already killed one so decided to stop and ask what you guys do to get a good, rippling in the breeze, flag?

 I have these decals at the moment but can get something else if needed.

I trim a piece of kitchen foil the same size as the flag then apply the decals to both sides of the foil. Next day when dry I touch up the silver edges and shape the flag.

Hmmm, maybe my impatience is some of the problem  I'll try a day instead of an hour. 

I do the same if using decal. I usually print them out on an HP printer. Original HP ink doesn't run when wet so they work with water and glue.

I have some fabric flags from AMP and they fold up really nicely.

plasticjunkie - Impatience, nope it's me. My decal came right off the foil. I used the duller side of foil. Anything special you can think of that i need to do different?

going to experiment with canopy glue on the one i just messed up 

Coat the foil with Future Floor finish or any gloss paint, then apply the decal.
