Nice work all-sorry I haven't been posting as I read the new post-but still, great work.

Making progress...not happy about the yellow fuselage stripe...changed my mind about which plane to build and it required a wider stripe....slight difference in coverage but I'm hoping I can 'weather it out'...if it were armor, I could just add mud....anyway, happy about the camo scheme overall-camo target is on the Lego stand-hope to get a gloss coat (Future) on tomorrow and then decals early next week.  The 109E-7/B (the 'target') in the pic is Georg Doffel's 109E on the  Stalingrad Front in 1942.  Found enoug pictures online of planes in 5 SchG1 to give me an idea of the mottle effect.

Yeah, you should be able to. It looks good and I really can't tell from the pics except all but the slightest diffrence.

There are some great builds going on here!  These are the planes I love.

I started my 1/72 Razorback over the weekend.  Not much too the kit, I had 2/3 of it assembled after one session.

I have since installed the wings, stabilizers, and cowling.  This one ought to be done by the weekend!

Robert-the Razorback is coming along nicely-looking forward to progress pics-I've not tried 1/72 yet but I'm thinking I need to.

Steve-thank you-I think weathering will lighten up the camo-or a very thinned coat of RLM 76.

Decals on-at least the 'major' ones-from a Ministry of Small Aircraft Production sheet-nice selection of options but the decals themselves are very thick-think old Tamiya thick-or thicker.  They have received a heavy Solveset bath-hopefully that will help.  Another coat of Future should take care of any silvering.  Other markings/stencils will come from the Hasegawa kit.

Bob - Very nice plane!  I keep meaning to build a German aircraft, but always end up finding something else instead.  Maybe 2022 will be the year!

The Razorback is done, I just don't have pictures yet. Here it is before the decals though:

The light gray splotches were paint touch ups, for some reason the paint dried lighter that before.  I shook the bottle more vigourously and touched up a 2nd time and that resolved it.  You'll have to take my word, I don't have a picture of it yet.

How were the checker decals? they look like they went down good.

Thanks guys!  I agree this kit was quick and fun, went together cleanly and I had no issues, except one operator error.  (I forgot to pre drill the holes for the rocket holders so left them off)

They laid down perfectly for me, I pretreated the areas with a fresh bottle of Micro Set and another coat afterwards.  They set right in to all the cracks and over the raised areas.

Robert, the P-47 is superb, I really like the paint job!  Also, lots of other nice work being done here, I haven't popped in as often as I should have lately.

I've been away from my bench for quite a while, for various reasons, but finally got back on Sunday.  My last post showed the Airfix Beaufighter in primer, and that's where it stayed, until I got going again and decided to try my hand at pre-shading, to break up the otherwise plain grey top surfaces.  I wasn't drawn to the usual "pre-shade the panel lines" approach, so decided to try mottling instead, in black -

I've never done pre-shading before (or mottling with an airbrush, for that matter), so I was quite pleased with my first effort.  Next stage was to apply the main colour over the top.  I really over-thinned the paint far too much and, as a result, almost flooded the model's surface by applying too much.  Fortunately, I realised in time and stopped.  Very carefully using kitchen paper to wick away the excess liquid from the trailing edges of the inner wings - where the pooling had occurred - just saved my bacon, but left a very scrappy result -

Thankfully, no remedial works were needed, so I let it dry, and carefully re-applied, using a more normal paint-to-thinner ratio.  

It doesn't really come across in the photos, but the colour variations are definitely there, but subtle, which was exactly what I wanted.  Hopefully, this will be a good base for the limited weathering I intend to apply a bit later.

Incidentally, the paint is Vallejo Model Air Medium Sea Grey, with my home-brew thinner (about 60% de-ionised water, 35% Isopropyl alcohol - the 99% variety - with the rest being flow improver and retarder (both Winsor & Newton)).  

More to follow, probably next weekend.

Got a bit more bench time in today, so I continued with the Beaufighter's paint job.  It's a simple two-colour scheme, and the upper-surface grey has had a week to dry thoroughly, so I masked it up and airbrushed the black (Vallejo Model Air with a couple of drops of home-brew thinner).

I used the "wheels-up" option gear doors as masks, the ones I'm using were painted on the sprue -

The blobby bulges aren't a case of extreme flash, I used blu-tack to mask the already-painted interiors.  Anyway, off with the masking tape - 

Cowlings dry-fiited in place, and canopy masks removed -

I'm always nervous when removing the masking tape, but I was well pleased with this result - not too shabby at all, I think.  The black seems to have brought out the colour modulation in the grey, and I'm not going to bother using a wash on the panel lines, as I think they look fine as they are.

A close look at the observer's position will reveal some bad smudges on the canopy.  I use Pmask vinyl masks, which normally cover the whole area to be masked but, in this case, they only covered the inside edges of the framework, so I used my usual masking tape to fill in the rest.  The residue actually came from the tape, not the vinyl masking - I have some sticky stuff remover somewhere, so I'll give that a try (trial run on a piece of scrap first!)

After that, the next job is a coat of Pledge floor polish, attach canopies & engines, then decals.

Thanks, JBRaider, I admit it hadn't occurred to me how odd that might look.  Hmmm - a "what if?" mottled scheme could be interesting, maybe a Luftwaffe-style desert one?

Been slowly closing up the fuselage and ended up having to wait for tooling to help me flex and twist it to get all the panel lines to align properly.  So, while waiting, I started getting the engines done.  Still have tons of engine accessories to tack onto the outside of them, but I'm pretty happy with how they're looking so far.

Sounds like it's fighting you, Eaglecash, but those engines are looking great!

I've not done much with the Beau this weekend, just a couple of minor touch-ups to the paintwork, and started on the dangly bits -  rockets & launch rails, auxiliary fuel tank.  Nothing really worth taking a picture of yet, so I didn't

Heh...check out this elaborate contraption I came up with for getting the panel lines aligned on the Frog fuselage.  Took a little bit of experimentation with placement of the square dowels, but it worked...even put rubber feet on the dowel ends to keep them from damaging the plastic.  FINALLY got the top of the fuselage closed up last night though.

Thanks Hutch.  I was able to get the panel lines to line up by putting the tail against my stomach, while holding the middle in my right hand, and pushing on the nose with my left to give it just a little bending.  But, there was no way in hell I was going to be able to continue to do that for the 30-40 minutes it was going to take for the melted plastic to re-harden.  Just had to mimic what I was doing manually with the medieval torture device I built.  LOL
