The First Gulf War 30th Anniversary Build
Posted by Glamdring on Sunday, December 6, 2020 3:12 PM

We are 30 years removed from the First Gulf War, and this is a group build to commemerate the beginning of combat operations by Coalition forces on January 17th, 1991.

The subject can be any piece of military hardware or figure used by the Coalition forces or Iraqi military, in their 1991 configuration.  (Ex. if someone has a kit of the USS Missouri, it must reflect the ship's Gulf War setup, not WW2 or Korea)

I will use this Wiki page as a reference factor for entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Gulf_War_military_equipment

 free image hosting

Combat was over within 6 weeks, but I think we can take a whole year for this one.  Without any further ado:

Rules

-Start Date: 1/1/2021

-End Date: 12/31/2021

-Crossovers are allowed.

-Kit can be started, but only if progress is within the first couple steps of the instructions

-Kit can be OOB or stocked with AM, your choice.

-Build subject should be in a 1991 configuration, and markings should match Gulf War theater deployment.

-Progress photos are necessary.

Once I create it, the completion badge can be claimed after the last photo is posted.

I'd like to join in on this. I was a reservist, mobilized for Desert Storm, hard to believe it's been almost 30 years. I don't have a subject chosen yet, I'd need to go through my stockpile to see what I have, but I think I might prefer something that I drove (which wasn't much). I'll do some research to see what's out there.

tempestjohnny - that's a nice, iconic choice!

Put me down for a Tamiya 1/35 Challenger 1 Mk.3. Planning on placing the order for the kit next week along with PE to replace the horrible mesh included in the kit, different decals and a couple resin figures.

I made an error at the local hobby shop today and bought the Tamiya 1/48 m1a2 abrams variant instead of the m1a1 used in Desert Storm. Based on my research though, I could pretty easily convert it to an m1a1 for the group build if that is ok with you Glamdring.

Keyserj - If you can make a go of retrofitting it, that's cool with me!  I'll mark it down as an A1.

keavdog  - Glad you joined, I have you down!

Welcome to you both!

This link is a good source to find out if your build was involved in Desert Storm.

Jasper - Thank you for your service, welcome aboard, and I look forward to your choice!

Thank you Glamdring!

I couldn't finding an interesting kit of anything I drove, so I'll go with something that was most certainly a lot more fun to "drive" than anything I touched.

Tamiya 1/48 F-16C block 25.

I'm looking forward to everyone's progress!

Did a cursory look through the kit and decal stashes to see what's on hand for this build.  Right now, providing I stick to my New Year's resolution of not buying any new kits so I can reduce the stash (hey, it's the thought that counts) I can do the following a USMC OV-10D, an A-6E TRAM, AV-8B Harrier, A-10A, F-14A, and an Italian F-104 that participated in the Kuwait campaign. If I decide to add to the decal stash, then a F-16 and some RAF ac could be added,

Hey gang, I think I'll get in on this one. I don't have a subject yet, but since crossovers are allowed, I'm going to see if I have something in the stash that will kill two birds at the same time. I'll let y'all know as soon as I have a subject.

Cheers!

Actually, I have a 1/72 Revell M1A1 (HA) that I think was there. The armor guys would have to concur because I have no clue.

I think I am gonna jump in on this one too!  Either with Revell's 1/48 F15C, 1/48th A10, or their 1/48th A6 Intruder....

Hello!

Robert invited me here (thanks a lot!) and I thught - nice, I'm starting it anyway, and I can always use some additional info, so here I go:

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

It's 120mm scale Verlinden resin kit 631.

There's also a dedicated WIP thread for it:

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/5/p/187241/2144576.aspx#2144576

I've already managed to paint the face:

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm by Pawel

Now I'm looking for references on the cover - what's the correct name for the cap the captain is wearing? What color would the underside of the visor be?

Thanks for lookin' and have a nice day

Paweł

Not a lot going on in this group build, eh?

Robert didn't even add me to the roster :-(

Now in the meantime I found out Verlinden got it very wrong in adding the captain bars to the cover - Marines don't do that. And the EGA (Eagle, Globe & Anchor) is wrong either - it should be "iron on" instead of a metal pin on - so I shaved it off, too. More details in the build thread, here's the painted cover:

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

So here's how the Captain looks like at the moment:

Verlinden 120mm (1/16) USMC Marine during Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait 631

I think I will now try my hand on the "chocolate chip" on the trousers, let's se how this turns out. Thanks for looking and have a nice day

Kick off is tomorrow already!

Sorry I have been letting this stew for a few days, a bad cold and other GB deadlines have been occupying my time.  What a way to spend a week of vacation.

I have the roster updated, if I missed anything, let me know.
