So he!! yeah I'm in mate.

Bish, your group builds are always about such great topics. This GB might be a little too tough to resist. I don't have a subject or a plan yet but i think I am working on it. The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth is just under 300 miles north of me near Pooler, GA. There is a B-47 parked outside near the front entrance to the museum. This is their B-17 inside of the museum: https://www.mightyeighth.org/

Nice choice. Based at Molseworth where the first 8th AAf mission took off from in 1942 and along with Alconbury the only WW2 8th bases in England still used by the USAF.

I looked over their website and there doesn't appear to be anything special scheduled for tomorrow. The museum has an ongoing series, "Target for Today" that willl be showing at 2:00 pm. "Target for Today" happens every Thursday at 2:00 pm.

I am thinking about a Thunderbolt or an F-82 for this group build.

Bish,

Here's hoping I am in shape to join this GB come January.  If everything goes okay, I've got a 1/48th Monogram B-24J on hand to enter.

On the other hand, I've been waiting for the Revell 1/32nd Late Model P-51D.  It's released, but so far hasn't made it across the pond.  In case it makes it soon after this GB starts, I'll be doing it instead!

Well, I'm committed to this group build. I just ordered 8th Air Force F-82 decals for the Monogram kit. Fortunately I have two or three kits in the stash.

So I went rummaging through the closet looking for an F-82 kit to use for this group build. I opened the box to find a partially assembled model AND the Starfighter decals I ordered this morning. In the plastic bag is another F-82 kit I think I was going to use to build Tom Reilly's XP-82 prototype.

Sign me up if I can ever find, and afford a B-24 to build.  It looks like only the 1/72 Hasagawa and Minicraft Js are the only ones on the market.  The D thats available is an assebmly ship, which might be interesting.

Glad to have you on board Scott. I am trying to get another B-24D myself and i would prefer the Hase kits, but they are not cheap. I have built one of the assembly ships and have anotehr in the stash, and they are different. They do include everything you need to build an armed bomber so would just need decals if you wanted to take that option.

If the assembly kit comes with the armement, then I can go that route. I have more decal options with the D.  But I did find an interest J to build.  Decisions, decisions.

I'd like to enter a 1/72 Hasegawa P-47 please Bish. If the decals are ok it will be 'Little Chief' of the 56th F.G., 8th Air Force. There's potentially more entries to come but my new policy is to get on top of one before I add any more.

I'm in with Temptation! a P-51D from the 362 FS, 357 FG. The 357th Fighter Group was the first P-51 Mustang Group in the Eighth Air Force, training with P-51D's from November 1943 at Raydon, England and entering combat with them in February of the following year from their new base at Leiston.

I've got 2 Dragon kits in 1/32 scale. An early and a late tail. If I get ambitious I'll use the other decals in the set and do Passion Wagon with the early tail

and if ambitious...

In the pattern: Scale Shipyard's 1/48 Balao Class Sub! leaning out the list...NOT! Ha, added to it again - Viper MkVii, 1/32 THUD & F-15J plus a weekend madness build!

That sounds serious. I have broken both my scaphoids, in fact my left is still broken as it wasn't spotted unitl i broke the right 11 years later and it was to late to fix. But that sounds a lot worse to have the plate and screws in. Well, the GB runs for a year so you have plenty of time to get fixed up.

Why rescribe? I can understand describing if the B-24 had flush rivets and butt joined panels, but the type did not. Overlapping panels and raised rivets were used, which the kit's raised panel lines do replicate fairly well.

Not planning on entering it in a contest are ya? Confused.  I am working on (well, it's on the shelf but I did actually work on it in the past 10 days) a Monogram B-17G -- Got the fuselage painted and decaled, but it's still in two halves Stick out tongue

Not planning on entering it in a contest are ya? Confused.  I am working on (well, it's on the shelf but I did actually work on it in the past 10 days) a Monogram B-17G -- Got the fuselage painted and decaled, but it's still in two halves Stick out tongue

Here's the box art for my entry, I see a lot of rescribing in my future.

I think Super Glue Mongoose, Zap-a-Gap to be exact, a new bottle that will set quickly. I'll work in 1 inch sections, put some glue between the two halves, press, and quickly whipe away any excess glue with a Q-tip. A little flat coat shold hide any remaing glue around the joint.

I will be doing the Revell 1/32 P51D with updated filleted resin tail in very colorful Contrary Mary markings.

Martin, Frank's F-82 entry is the 1/72 Monogram kit, not 1/48.  I wish Monogram had done it in 1/48, instead of Modelcraft, although there is a new 1/48 kit soon to be here that sounds pretty nice, but pricey as all the new kits seem to be.

Thanks, Jeaton. Yep, the ancient Monogram 1/72 scale F-82 kit is my entry. It will be the third F-82 I've built since I returned to the hobby. I thought about the new Modelsvit F-82 kit but the kit retails around $90+ and I can't justify that expense. I have too many kits in the stash that need to be built anyway.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

The Monogram kit builds up pretty nice.  Hobbycraft copied that kit and it isn't as good as the Monogram plastic.  I built the Monogram kit a while back.

I have two of the Modelcraft kits, maybe someday I will be silly enough to try one.  Right after a Model USA O-1!

Here's mine.  Black can hide a lot of sins, but it doesn't have too many.  I did use vac canopies, the ones in the kit are a little thick.

Well, still 3:15 to go here is California and I'm looking at the B-24 instructions, but I have this stupid (imagine Calvin and Hobbes here)Italeri B-26K still to finish before I start the B-24.  At least it's almost ready for paint.  I can't even remember what GB I entered it in, but I know there was one somewhere.

I hope you all had a safe New Year celebration. Wishing all a safe and prosperous 2022.

I bought this Revell 1/32 Mustang when it first came out a while back. I was hoping to find colorful markings for a NMF non filleted tail scheme but was unable to find one I liked. There is a huge selection for the filleted Mustangs so I opted to get a resin filleted tail from a company in the UK called  Aircraft Models.

I superglued the resin parts to the fuselage sides late last night before going to bed.

The resin parts are on solid and have good fit on the fuselage sides.

Preliminary dry fitting this morning revealed a small gap on the fillet spine. Once the sides go together, I will use thick CA and baking soda as a filler on the resin allowing sanding the area to a thin sharp edge along the spine.

It's officially the first, I'm sitting at home with a cold (No, it's NOT Covid!) so figured today would be a good day to start my contribution to this mighty GB. I'm in with a Hasegawa (sorry, NOT Tamiya) P-38F that will also be a crossover for the Lockheed Martin GB.

I have some resin wheels, an aftermarket decal sheet, and am considering using some turned barrels, but otherwise this will be OOB.

This kit has some pretty nicely molded detail in the cockpit. The only thing I added was some belts made of paper.

My builds are usually built with the cockpit's closed up, so I don't spend a lot of time detailing the office. (That and I'm not that good at cockpit painting and/or detailing.)

I like to build more than one kit at a time, so this one will share bench-space with a AMT's 1/48 F7F-3 Tigercat for the Animalistic GB. Stay tuned!

Good luck with your builds everyone. I'm looking forward to finishing more than 3 in 2022!

PJ,

I'll follow along with your build as mine is pretty much the same.  I thought about buying an aftermarket tail with fillet too for the early model, but decided to wait for the late version.

As promised, here's some shots of the sprues and decals for the P-51D-15.

This comprises most of the pit.

Fuselage and wings.

This is wing tanks, bombs and rockets.  Three canopies, probably of different types.

And Barracudal decals.  The reason I bought the 1/32 scale P-51D.

Next up is to give the sprues a bath.

I waited a bit but got  anxious and got the resin tail anyway. The fillets started I believe on 10NA frames and the others got field mods. The IPs changed slightly I believe on 20NA frames. I read about some gap issues on the belly area so we will see once the build progresses. I'm kind of stuck till I can paint in the garage again. We are still putting away Christmas things so hopefully I will reclaim my painting area soon so I can get colors on the pit .

Didn't get much done today, but any progress, not matter how small, is still progress...

Today I focused on the booms. I've read that this kit isn't Hasegawa's best fitting boxing, and I saw that first hand today. I'm guessing, as Hase is prone to do, it uses a modular base kit with the bits and pieces to make the variants included in each particular box. Well, I saw today that the coolers on the booms and the intakes under the nacelles had parts that were undersized.

Here you can see that gaps in the cooler doors...

And the lip on the cooler intake...

It wasn't difficult but after some filling, sanding, shaping, and rescribing...

I was able to get things looking decent...

Next I'll assemble the booms, attack the intakes, and get everything cleaned up.

Thanks for lookin'! Of course comments, questions, and criticisms are always welcome.

Cheers!

Thanks cb. I used my pin vise with a sharp pin to punch a pilot hole on the center then use my mini carbide  bits from Habor Freight that work great. I can get some tiny holes drilled out with them but they will break very easily.

I took advantage of my last couple of days of vacation and a couple of subsequent sick days and put in some quality bench time.

I've been able to make some solid progress on my Lightning. I got the booms squared away. As I mentioned in a previous post, the inserts for the various variants didn't fit very well. I was able to get them to a point that I was happy with.

After some shaping, filling, sanding and rescribing, here are the finished products:

I was also able to get the central "pod" assembled. The instructions have the booms assembled to the upper wing before adding the cockpit/lower pod assembly. During dry fit, that didn't make sense to me. Seems to me that's where other builders' alignment problems came from. So I assembled the central section first, then will assemble the booms and lower wing sections later. Anyway, I was able to get a very good fit and good alignment, however, it seems that as the glue was setting, the parts shifted a bit which resulted in a step along the forward fuselasge sides. I'll have to deal with that.

You'll notice that I also got the nose cone installed. Like other parts in this kit, it doesn't fit well. It's too big. I ended up with a step at the bottom, but you can see I was able to wrestle that into submission. Nothing some more shaping, filling, sanding and rescribing couldn't handle.

Oh, and of course, I couldn't resist posing the main assemblies together for something that resembles a Lightning...

Anyway...more later. Stay tuned!

Cheers,

-O

Much progress, Omar.  That is a strange prop attachment on those booms.

My ProModeler B-24 kit does not have 8th AF markings, so I went looking for a likely candidate for an 8th B-24D and came upon Bomerang.  Here is the history, copied from a page on the American Air Museum in Britain web site:

The B-24D, 41-23722, Bomerang, based in Britain, flew on the 93rd Bomb Group's maiden mission on 9 October 1942. It sustained the worst battle damage of the ten Liberators damaged on the mission, with over 200 holes in the plane. Due to shortages of B-24 parts in the UK early in the war, common practice dictated, 41-23722, was to be cannibalized to repair the other aircraft, but the aircraft's crew chief, Master Sergeant Charles Chambers, adamantly refused, and the aircraft was saved with the support of the pilot, Lieutenant John Stewart.

Bomerang, was flown on Operation Tidal Wave by Pilot Roy G. Martin and Colonel Luther Smith Bird, who survived the raid on the Ploesti oil refinery complex, to return safely to Libya on, 1 Aug, 1943.

Bomerang, became the first B-24D Liberator of the 8th Air Force to complete 50 missions. On completion of the aircraft's 53rd mission on 4 April, 1944, General Ted Timberlake visited the plane and crew at Hardwick for their "50 Mission" going away party.

On 17 April, 1944, Bomerang, embarked on a war bond tour, returning to the U.S. with its crew led by Col. Walter Stewart, with Lt. Royden Lebrecht in, The Squaw, and Lt. John Young in, The Blue Streak.

One lucky B-24!

I thought about doing the decals myself, but I didn't find any reference for the Kangaroo artwork colors.  I was able to find decals for it from Dave Klaus' website so I ordered them.  If anyone else has need of the other parts of the sheet, let me know, they are all Ploesti raid airplanes.

Here's the Bomerang part of the sheet.

Here is the kit and markings I'm working on.

I know it's cliché, but is it really a Mustang without checkerboards on the nose? Wink

FINALLY!! I started the 8th AF F-82E. Not much, but a start. The seats are pretty much done. I cut some Tamiya tape on my Infini cutting board to make the shoulder harnesses and lap belts. Not sure if I'll have pilots in the seats though. Now to put the seats in their respective fuselage.

Mongoose, no, these will be the first I've used, but I think I do have some of his other decals in the stash.  It seems like a lot of the time I pick subjects that are not available anywhere so I make a lot of my own decals and masks.

CBaltrin, yes, the research is fun, and building a model with no sense of its history seems less interesting to me.

John> Interesting B-24.  Hopefully the decals don't give you too much trouble.

Fotofrank> Not bad!  The F-82 will make for a wild ride!

Fearless> Welcome to the GB!  Look forward to the Eduard P-51.

My own P-51 has had its bath and is awaiting my finishing up other projects.  Always something!  Big Smile

Outstanding work by everyone on this GB.

Been looking over things and the flaps, ailerons and elevators are all missing the riveting so, out came the RB Riveter and spent a few hours roling the missing details. Just enough to busy up the metal skin.

The parts before detailing.

After rolling the riveter.

Topside completed, the bottoms will be next but not tonight Surprise

The rivets are subtle and hard to see in the pictures but will be more visible after paint and washes.

Lovin' it. Lovin' it all!

Hey fearless, I kicked around the idea of doing Landers' Mustang for this GB as a crossover for the Animalistic GB too. I'm glad I didn't! By the look of your start, I don't think mine wouldn't have compared!

Keep up the great work all. Great lookin' stuff!

I have a two reference books regarding the Mighty 8th AAF , so

I've beenthinking about joining this group build for a couple of weeks now and was going through my kit stash to find something that would be suitable .

I have chosen the 1/72 Academy P-38J Lightning

The kit decals have the "California Cutie" markings which I found reference to in the Mighty Eighth in colour book

Please sign me up .

Helo, can’t comment on the 1/72 scale but the Academy 1/48 P-38 is a great kit. I built one as a commission a while back and went together very well.

What a shame...

free model day WOOHOO!!!

I know, I know, the wheel wells are all yellow. Heresy! Sharpen the torches and light the pitchforks! Big Smile

I've seen, heard, and read arguments with more variations than can be counted, green, yellow, bare aluminum, and all combinations of those finishes. IMHO, considering the variations, no one can say with certainty what 44-72218 had for factory original finish, or what was added in theater...

Yellow looks good! That being said, I want this thing to be right, so if someone KNOWS something i don't, I've got a brush and plenty of paint Wink

Thanks, Bish. I've had a tough time getting motivated since Christmas. This Monogram kit is a simple build and should get me going. The major components are built, the fuselages and the wing. Now I'm assembling all of the little stuff. I'll have some pictures in a day or two before the F-82 heads to the paint shop.

Fearless, look at this link where I took a lot of photos of a very authentic restoration, other than it being way too shiny on the outside for a wartime airplane.

Ditto One can only approximate specially when only one or no pictures exist of the particular aircraft. The one I’m doing has only one known picture in existence so artistic license is not an issue.

Thank you for the link jeaton01

That is a beautiful bird and those closeups are really clear. Now I see that while this Eduard kit has the most detailed wheel wells I've ever messed with, it is still lacking a ton detail. when I get home, I'm going to compare the pics and the model and see if I can incorporate any improvements...

Not a whole lot to report on my Lightning but there are a few things to share.

First, I got the transparencies installed, but before I could, I had to deal with a small problem.

During dryfitting, I noticed the rear canopy wouldn't sit flush against the fuselage.

Turns out the armor plating behind the seat was too tall. So, I had to remove it and cut it down. I used some liquid cement to soften the joint, then carefully pulled the piece away.

After I cut it down, I reinstalled it, and the canopy piece fit beautifully.

The five-piece canopy assembly was a bit fiddly and took some time to get together, but the parts go together nicely.

I bought a Montex mask set and got the framing interior colors sprayed.

I have to say that I'm disappointed with the Montex masks. This is the third set I've tried, and all three have been too big. With all three sets, I've had to cut each mask into smaller pieces to get them to fit within the molded framing. For the side windows, I had to use the masks Montex provides for the interior of the transparencies. I don't think I'll be using Montex in the future...

Anyway, I have to go back to work tomorrow. I don't think there will be much to share until next weekend. Now that the transparencies are protected, I think I'm going to attack the boom attachments, clean up seams, and replace any erased details. Stay tuned!

Feel free to share your comments, questions, and/or criticisms.

Thanks again for lookin'!

Nice work O. I don't like Montex masks. I find they never stay down especially on curved pieces. I bought a few as they are cheaper than Eduard, but have since replaced the ones i can. I try and avoid vinyl masks now.

Well, I'm not in a position to build a bomber. Depending on the scale, I can put at least 4 fighters on the shelf that one B-24 or B-17 would take up.

I don't know about you, but if I were in flying in your B-24, I think this ratio of escort fighters to bombers would be to my liking. Wink

Well, yeah, but at least we need enough bombers to make at least one box formation!  But likely as not they'd all be B-17's flying 2000 feet higher while I get all the flak!Crying

My wife constantly warns me about that...

Have any of y'all ever done a YB-40 conversion on a B-17F? A Google search turned up a couple of resin sets to modify either the 1/72 Revell or Academy kit. I might have to dig deeper IF this Mustang wraps quickly.

According to scalmates there were 2. One by Blackbird Models and the other by Paragon. But both are quite old and you would struggle to find them. Paragon no longer exists and the Blackbird one is out of stock on their site. I'd like to do a BQ-7 conversion but its never been done so might have to scratch one.

I see your point on the availability of a YB-40 conversion. That is unfortunate. Probably for the best right now though, there's lot's of work to do before another project...

Got the pit completed.  I used the kit decals and placards but were not enough so I dug into my spares for anything looking close to what the pony used. The wood floors were painted black and would show some foot traffic From use. I simulated this effect by dry brushing dark brown on the worn areas.

I wired up the radio battery.

The pit sides after paint and decals.

I used some Verlinden 1/32 seat belt buckles and wine foil to make the seat belts

Used The kit decals for the instrument faces then added clear parts cement for the glass.

The F-82 is all primered with MM gray enamel primer. As I wait for the primer to cure for a few days I pulled this Tamiya P-47D out of the closet. cbaltrin suggested a "Razorback" Thunderbolt would be a good follow-up to the Twin Mustang. I ordered decals to build the Thunderbolt as a 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron airplane. I should have the decals in about a week.

If you casually look at the clear Revell parts they appear to be ok but, look closely at the front windscreen panel and is not flat but looks like a clear puddle. The canopy sides distort in a wave pattern.

Here is a perfect demonstration

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A664rUqiW7I

So the same company that makes the resin tail makes a great replacement canopy and windscreen. Looks like I will be ordering it since my clear parts are VERY distorted.

Also some caution during joining the fuselage halves. I like to dry fit parts to test the waters before using glue and the pit side frames, front and rear bulkheads MUST be sanded thinner to allow the fuselage to close. I read about this issue in a review and sure enough I experienced the same problem. Some sanding with a coarse sanding stick fixed the gap issue.

My kit and decal set came today.  Except I just found out the decals are a two part set, and I ordered part 2.  I should have also ordered part 1 and of coarse, its out of stock. LOL  No biggie, it was the nose art I needed and got.

OK gang, when I last left you, my Lightning was masked up and awaiting its booms. Since my last installment, I was able to get the booms attached and cleaned up. The fit wasn't terrible but there was a bit of filling and sanding needed to smooth things out. After I got the assemblies together and cleaned up, I went back and replaced lost rivets and panel lines.

Then I sprayed some Alclad gray microfiller. This helped fill in those tiny sanding gouges and made those spots that needed more love a little more visible.

Then I got busy with the primary painting. Here it is with its primary coat. I'm still going to go back and distress the paint a bit more.

Now that the big parts are assembled and painted, I'm going to turn my attention to the fiddly bits. As it stands now, I'm pretty happy with where I'm at with the Lightning. I think the worst is over. Should be downhill from here.

Of course, feel free to share you comments, questions, and criticisms.

Thanks for looking. Stay tuned for more!

Cheers,

Talk me off the ledge fellas...

I'm already nervous about NM finish...

Somehow i missed these spots during fitting, construction, sanding, and priming, NOW these sink marks showed up. I have no idea how I overlooked them.

Anyway, just venting a little, I'm gonna try and sand this mess down to an acceptable level and repaint.

UPDATED this post instead of creating another one...

Whew, repaint was successful, aluminum all wrapped. Letting the gloss coat dry until at least tomorrow...

Hey gang, I'm posting in the hopes of getting a little feedback. This is the first time I've done this amount of chipping on a build. I'd appreciate a little constructive criticism. Whathca think? I'm going for a used but not abused look. Is the chipping convincing? Thoughts?

I don't know about the wear areas on that type, but it looks to me as though where you have put them looks about right. I am not a fan of chipping myself, but if it matches real life photo's, then who is to argue.

Finally got a response from Revell about the canopy and windscreen issue and replacements will be sent free of charge. The massage said it will take up to 6 weeks for the parts to arrive so hopefully these will have no distortion.

And some progress done with the pony. Got the fuselage closed up after sanding down the thickness of the pit side frames and both bulkheads otherwise the fuse halves will have a slight gap.

I drilled out the carburator intake panels

Working on the main gear wells now.

Thanks Fearless.

The main gear area was sprayed Humbrol Metalcote polished aluminum and after drying was buffed with a Q Tip. Next I spent a couple of hours masking to spray the stringers and crossmembers zync chromate green. This is how things look with the parts unglued and waiting for the Fundekal red stencils that go on the NMF sheet metal between the stringers.

The two visible mold marks will be covered up by the main gear struts once secured on. Lots of plumbing to come.

Thanks, Jeaton. This Twin Mustang has not been my favorite build. I've built three of these old Monogram kits in the past couple of years. I'm pretty sure this one will be the last one I build. I still have two more up in my stash closet. I will persevere and finish this and make it look good despite my attitude toward the kit. Maybe I'll pose all three together after I finish this one.

A build I am much more proud off. A Tamiya P-47D Razorback. The finished build will represent a Thunderbolt of the 5th ERS based at Boxted. This is the cowling for the airplane. The red and white are Tamiya paints, the blue is MM Insignia Blue enamel. All of the ERS Thunderbolts had this red, white and blue cowling.

Finished the R, W, and B trim on the F-82 today. The red and white are Tamiya colors while the blue is MM Insignia Blue enamel. If you look closely, you can see where the Tamiya tape pulled up the Alclad from the primer. So, I'll be doing some touch-up on the Alclad after the blue enamel cures for a couple of days . . . more masking. After that comes the blue on the noses and the anti-glare panels on the noses.

Yes, I am adding the Thunderbolt to the group build. The kit is the Tamiya P-47D Razorback in 1/48 scale. I think I'm getting my *** back after a mid-winter slump.

Yeah, that's right, Bish. The pressed paper long range fuel tank isn't a problem. Every Mustang and Thunderbolt kit has a pair of those. Loon Models made the life rafts under the wings and flare attachments under the fuselage, but they are long out of production.

Just incase: Loon Models LO48219. Maybe someone has this lurking in their spares box.

The F-82 Twin Mustang is complete. Finally. Not my favorite build. This is the last one of these old Monogram F-82 kits I'm going to build for some time. Anyway, enough of my complaining. While the aircraft wears the 8th Air Force logo on the right fuselage, the airplane was based at Kearney AFB, near Kearney, Nebraska. The model is finished with Alclad Dark Aluminum over a grey enamel primer. Decals are from Starfighter. The decals are very thin and are easy to apply. The heavily colored markings like the 8th AF logo did need Solvaset to snuggle down onto the raised panel lines.

Good evening folks,

I'm in need of some P-51 wisdom. Hopefully y'all will know something that I don't...

I have not seen instructions to fill this hole for a particular variant. However notice the difference in the paint and decal instructions from one aircraft to the next:

Any insight would be great!

Next check out the decal colors. I have always understood that Landers' aircraft code had a red outline.

I knew he had different variantions of the paint scheme, but I am not aware of a yellow outline. Again, maybe I've been reading all the wrong stuff. But this just looks strange...

These are definitely not red...

Perhaps this is the supposed yellow outline version...

and surprise, surprise, no checkerboard decals for the wing tips.

maybe I'm the victim of Mandela effect, but Eduard and I are not seeing eye to eye on this bird at all...

Please help!!!

John. Thank you. yes its the nose art addition, why would I keep it so long? . The size of this kit is big for 1/72 and 1/48 forget about it.

latest pics sprayed green blotches and now plan for gloss coat.

Yee Haw! This one is about wrapped up. I just need to attach the drop tanks, flaps, propeller, antenna, add a fiddlly bit to the inside of the canopy, a handful of decals, and the final coat of clear...

Looks good fearless. Your BBD is giving me the Mustang itch...Although, the 6 on my shelf tell me I need to build something different.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Fearless I know this is a little late. But Lifelike Decals did an anthology of Big Beautiful Doll. If you look at version 3 and 4 they do seem to have a yellow outline and no checked wing tips

Nicw work everyone. Hopefully I can start this GB soon; although, I may need to do something simple first to ensure I finish. I have a few 1/72 P-47's in the stash (Tamiya, Hasegawa and Academy versions...)..   I plan on doing one for a GB on "another platorm" so I might as well add them here as well... Probably gona be 'Little Demon' from 353rd FG or Academy 'Eileen' from 78th...  Still  plan on doing the Airfix P-51D ultimately though...

Thanks Frank, however I don't want to be taking credit for something I didn't do, those checkerboards are the kit decals. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Finally received the  replacement  clear parts from Revell for my P51D and are equally distorted as the first ones!  So much for good quality control. I sent them another email with pictures this time so there is confusion. This is frustrating.

PJ,

Your bad luck with the canopy got me to check my own for the late version Mustang.  My eyesight might not be so good, but they look fine to me.  You have my sympathy.

Gary, this is how my parts look. Notice the distortion in the circled areas. The front windshield panel is very wavy. The distortion is not noticeable at a quick glance but a closer look reveals the imperfections.

The windshield side panels look good.

If Revell doesn't come through, and it may take awhile, I can let you have one of mine.  The front has only one, so I need that, but your welcome to the other two.

Just try gfowler2012 at yahoo dot com.  You should know how to interpret that.  Big Smile

Gary

PS> The kit apparently tries to replicate the different types of canopy.

http://www.gaetanmarie.com/p-51dk-mustang-canopy-variations/

There seems to be a "Intermediate Inglewood" type, a "Late Inglewood" type and a "Dallas" type.  You'll probably need the "Intermediate Inglewood" or the "Late Inglewood", depending on the date your building.

Finally. Some headway on the 5th ERS Thunderbolt today. I pre-shaded the airplane with Tamiya NATO Black. I cut out a painting step. No primer. I cleaned the Thunderbolt really good with 70% isopropyl alcohol then proceeded with the pre-shading. Right now I have a Checkertale Mustang and P-40 I'm working on and I painted the checkerboard pattern on both with no primer and had no problems. I'm hoping the Thunderbolt goes the same way.

Yes, I did.  Did you receive a reply?  I'm going to be busy the rest of the afternoon, so there'll be a delay in replying.  I have to return a heart monitor I've been wearing for the past 24 hours.  They have a drop box at the clinic.

Did you decide on the type of canopy you want?  I can just send you both.  I'll keep the Dallas type for my build.

Yikes! I can't believe it's been a month since my last post! Before I share the latest progress, let me say that I'm impressed with the work going on. Quality work all around, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's finished builds. Keep it up, everyone!

OK, so I was able to get some progress made on my Lightning. I was able to get the resin wheels and landing gear painted up. I also got the prop assemblies done. Oh, and some decals and detail painting. I did have one minor setback though. During decaling, my kit slip off the jig and knocked the canopy and armored glass loose. I was able to repair the canopy, but in an effort to avoid marring the inside of the windscreen with glue, I decided to leave off the armored glass. Oh well. It wouldn't be one of my build if something didn't go wrong.

Anyway, here's where I'm at. Keep in mind that the prop and landing gear assemblies are just dry-fitted for the sake of the photos.

Slowly but surely my Lightning is getting there. Of course, comments, questions, and criticisms welcome.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,

More progress on the 5th ERS Thunderbolt. More pre-shading. Since these airplanes were labeled "War Weary" I'm trying to show some real wear and tear. I sure hope it works. I'll shoot some O.D. later today. The underside is already painted. I don't have any Neutral Gray paint, so I mixed 2 parts Tamiya Flat White to 1 part Tamiya RLM Gray. The resulting gray color is a little light but it looks good to my eye.

Yeah, kinda looks like a bad patchwork quilt. Here is the Thunderbolt with O.D. and Gray paint. I clear coated the airplane with Tamiya X-22 Gloss Clear. I'm going to try to paint everything I can: National insignia, theater markings, invasion stripes, tail number. I've scanned the Xtradecal sheet so I can make stencils with my Silhouette. Stay tuned.

Well...she's done!

Final thoughts,

Big Beautiful Doll turned out alright. The cockpit was, EXCELLENT. The glass is super clear. The rivet and panel lines were deep enough for easy panel wash work after the various coats of, primer, paint, clear, etc were added. Otherwise, for the money, I was not impressed with this kit. Don't get me wrong, it's got a lot going for it, window masks, PE, many build options, etc, but I probably should have built the Tamiya. I've heard so much about this Eduard release I wanted to try it. The fit was mostly OK. However, for a new mold from a major manufacture, "mostly OK" ain't gonna cut it. Oh boy, there were sink marks too, 4 pretty bad ones. Also, there were some inexplicable design decisions made. For example, the landing gear was so unnecessarily weak, that sitting on the shelf finished, I wouldn't be surprised if this thing collapses under its own weight. The PE connection points for the drop tanks are super dumb. You need three hands to have a hope getting those things right. The decals have that ridiculous clear film that works "OK" on the large decals, but trying to pull that crap off the relatively thin font of the "Big Beautiful Doll" decals nearly caused me to have to pick another paint scheme.

So, be aware of what you're getting into with this one. You can build an absolutely gorgeous Mustang, but it's got more warts than it should for the money.

(IMHO)

Thanks. I have several files I can use to output the national insignia, so I'm good there. What I really need is the correct color blue for the insignia out of the bottle or the correct proportions to mix the blue. The Tamiya Insignia Blue is too light. I guess Google will be my friend again.

I usually use Tamiya TS-15, decanted of course. It's close enough for me.  MRP also makes an insignia blue.

Hey gang, I just wanted to post some proof of progress. I haven't have much bench time as of late, but I have been plugging away at my Lightning. I was able to get it flat-coated and demasked. Unfortunately, I found that there's a small blemish on the interior of the port window. I'm not sure how that got there. I considered pulling the canopy off and seeing if I could fix it, but I didn't want to run the risk of making things worse. I was able to get the Lightning up on her legs. My biggest complaint with Hasegawa's Lightning is the main gear door attachment. It's terrible! Not much left to do. Hopefully, next time I post, I'll be showing photos of my finished build.

Sorry for the quality of the photos. These were snapped in a hurry. I promise to post better photos next time.

As usual, comments, questions, and criticisms welcome. Thanks for looking!

Going out back to paint the under wing insignia. I'm painting the blue first to try to avoid having a white outline. I tried it out on my paint mule and it seemed to work pretty well spraying the white second. I'm using Tamiya X-3 Royal Blue for the Insignia Blue. The paint color looks dark enough and on the gray and O.D., the blue should appear dark enough to the eye.

More progress on the 5th ERS Thunderbolt. I have the Xtracal decal set for this build but I'm trying to paint as much as I can. I finished the underwing insignia yesterday and I think they look terrific! I had to go with Tamiya Flat Blue instead of the Tamiya Royal Blue. The royal blue just didn't work. I'll try to finish the national insignias this weekend. The tough ones will be on the waist with the supercharger vent doors open.

Hey gang, just a quick update on the progress of my Lightning. As of today, it's 99% done. I just need to add the belly's colored formation lights and the gun barrels. I have a set of Master Model brass barrels, but they're the "smooth" jacket type for later Lightning variants. I've ordered the "early" types with the perforated jackets. They should land on my porch by the week's end. Once they're here, it'll be a matter of slappin' 'em on and snappin' some photos! Anyway, as a teaser, here are a couple of shots of where my build stands.

Of course, comments, questions, and criticisms are welcome.

Cheers!

Fearlessfarless, Fotofrank, and Ortiz>  You're all looking splendid... well, your models at least!  Stick out tongue

Thought I would post something to prove I'm actually doing something, which is... not much.  Painting the pit and checking fit is about it.  Had to decide on the type of seat to include (the Warren-McArthur).  Didn't know P-51s were so complicated!

Oh, and I'm getting the 1/48 scale Hawk P-51D ready for restoration.  Looks miniscule next to the Revell 1/32nd P-51!

Speaking of completing projects, I got this in the mail today...

Looks like I can wrap up this build this weekend. Hopefully I'll have some shots of my finished product by Sunday. Wish me luck!

Looking good crown, the paint looks great.

I too have been slowly working on my Mustang while waiting for the replacement parts that came in but are just a tad better than the kit’s so I will take that to the bank so to speak. Revell sent me 3 canopies and like Gary pointed out are different types.

The wing panel lines were puttied up to the center of the wing just like they did back then then shot silver enamel paint on most of the bottom wing and all of the top wing as this was the process done on the later Mustangs. Gloss black was sprayed and then was polished with Novus 2 to get a glass smooth finish. I experimented with a couple of panels and shot gloss dark grey to get contrast and break up the solid polished aluminum color yet to come.

Alclad Polished Aluminum was sprayed but allowing some of the dark base color to peak thru for the metal tonal shades.

It takes a bit more surface prep work but the extra effort pays off.

I'm sorry my participation here has been so poor, my time (and energy) is being absorbed by a new workshop I am building.  I'm putting the roofing materials on now and as soon as it is weathertight I hope to be around more.  O's P-38 is beautiful, the B-17 looks grand, and the pilot will appreciate the fine work on the Spitfire cockpit!

More progress on the 5th ERS Thunderbolt. I used my Silhouette to cut masks for the national insignia, then lots of Tamiya tape to mask the area for the invasion stripes. I'll lay down the Tamiya Flat White tomorrow followed by NATO Black. I've been learning a lot with this build. Pre-shading, post shading, masking, but mostly patience. Don't Hurry!

Even more progress on the 5th ERS Thunderbolt. I finished painting the Invasion Stripes on the wings this morning. I know this sounds like a big brag, but I'm really impressed with myself. Everything I've learned over the past five years is really coming together with this build. It's very exciting!

I cut stencils for the national insignia with my Silhouette cutter, sprayed the blue first then the white. Then I cut a mask for the national insignia then masked for the invasion stripes. Yesterday I sprayed the white and this morning I sprayed the black. After I peeled off the tape and masks and saw the results, I thought, did I really do this? My new attitude of DON'T HURRY is paying dividends.

There's a huge front headed our way. Lots of wind, drenching rain, for a couple of days, so I may not be able to paint the invasion stripes on the fuselage until Monday.

Truly impressive work gents, great job guys.

Got some painting done on the canopy, partial anti glare panel, prop spinner, windscreen and rudder. The checkered rudder decal had to be trimmed to make it fit properly. I shot the rudder white then red and tested tge trimmed decal that looks good to my eyes.

Will start on the checkered nose soon.

Thanks Crown. Love how you Fortress turned out.

Very happy how well the nose checkerboard  decals came out being separated into 6 parts lining up very nicely. The decal film is very thin and of excellent quality. Lifelike Decals are fantastic. Lots of Solvaset helped to snuggle things down specially near the prop area.

Mary has 14 kill marks on the canopy frame so it's best not to *** her off lol!

I have most of the big decals on but still have to spray the wingtips white to add the checkerboards. The metallic shades are very subtle but different tones are visible. The puttied wings were sprayed with Floquil Old Silver for the lacquered silver look. Also used Flory Dark Dirt wash to pop skin details. Lots of tiny stencils are yet to be applied.

All panel lines on the top and bottom were puttied up to the middle of the wing chord wise direction. Gun panels left as is. Flaps, aelirons and the two large panels on the bottom wing near the radiator intake were NMF. The wing was sparayed with a lacquered metallic paint and will have a different color/tone than the fuselage, flaps and ailerons that were NMF. The rudder however was fabric and will have a duller color if painted silver.

To add to PJ's exposition, here are some drawings that I have found helpful.  I recently bought a book about building the Mustang with many production photos and these drawings don't seem to argue with the photos.

The Jennings Helig photos show where the silver lacquer was applied but there is much more detail in the second two about primer and filler application.

The access doors in the leading edge ahead of the landing gear were not painted in the photos in the book, where Jennings indicates they were and the second drawings indicate they were not.  The primer and filler were applied during wing construction, not after final assembly..

Very sharp, Ernie!

I'm getting closer to starting on my Monogram B-24D.  I ordered some PE for it, for the bomb bay and seat belts.  The ProModeler kit came with a pe panel that goes over a decal so that's covered.  I hope that method works.  I'm at the finishing stages on an Eduard Yak 3, an Italieri B-26K, a Pegasus Martin Baker MB.5, and pretty far along on a Hobbycraft 1/48 CF-105.  I'm putting the siding on my new workshop, so I can spare some time for modeling now that rain is no threat.  I've been working on the 4 models above for so long it's sort of a grind but when modeling gets tough, a modeler just has to keep grinding!Dunce

Yup.  As for the 1/72 Italeri kit, it would have been easier and maybe cheaper to build the ICM 1/48 kit.

I built that Italeri as a SOG Counter Invader a while back. I had to replace the tires with resin AC130 ones and a couple of other mods. But it makes a great display piece.

I put in a resin cockpit, the Whirlybird tail correction, lengthened the tip tanks, stole the main wheels from an Aria/Lots AMT 707 kit which I have several of.  The fit of the replacement panels on mine was poor, as was the canopy.  But it will be nice when done.  I admit I have developed a bad attitude toward Italeri kits!Angry

That sounds like lots of extra work ans should look very nice.Yes

I built mine several years back for a Viet Nam GB. i modified the pit by scratbuilding it, replaced the tires, addedresin mg barrels, scratched some cluster bomsvused as truck killers. I know I did a couple of other things but can’t remember now. I did use aftermarket decals. As I recall the kit’s fit was very good. I would love to find another to build as a CIA Congo ship. I have the decals for it.

Been away from the forums for most of the year (not that I am on them much to start with) and trying to get caught up on all of the amazing builds. The quality of work and attention to detail never ceases to amaze me.

PJ your P-51 is incredible, i am in awe over this one

I started on the Academy P-51 with an Eduard set for the cockpit. It is a lot of work and while it looks okay my PE skills are lacking.

The kit went together well and I was able to get the primer, preshade and base coats on this last week

Noticed a seam that needs to be taken care of on the bottom

Hoping to get the white stripes and the decals on this weekend.

I was going to do the Old Crow at first but the Malcolm Hood on the Academy kit is horrible. So I am working on a variant with the hinged canopy, Cpt. Victor Frances's "Miss Dallas"

Thanks JB!

So the kit has extra tanks and some nice 500 lb. bombs that would look good in a vignette setting so I had an old picture frame to use for the base, some Sculptamold and water to make a tarmac. Taped up the edges to protect the wood.

The Sculptamold was mixed and poured, smoothed out and expansion joints added.

Then craft acrylics were used to paint and drybrush the tarmac. Oil stains were added.

Figuring out positioning things. The disposible paper tanks and bombs need paint and decals.

Brake lines were also added to the main landing gear.

Brilliant, PJ.  I do wish you would give the brake lines a little more attention.  There should be a rubber hose that spans the scissors and is fastened at both sides.  We don't want our hero to break a brake line!

Thanks for the pictures John. I wanted to add the lines before attaching the struts but I forgot to do so before attaching the mains. I'm afraid to damage the mains at this time but may try something anyway. The pictures I saw had the lines as all metal or had rubber hose detail from what I could see but your pictures are really well detailed.

First, to catch-up.

Nick> Nice going on the fortress.  Well done!

JB> Your P-51 is coming along nicely.

PJ> Beautiful work!  You've done a marvelous job.

As for me, I'm coming along slowly with "Alabama Rammer Jammer".  Would go faster if I didn't spend so much time on other stuff and concentrated on it, but she's coming along.  The pit and fuselage are together, and now I'm working on the wings.  I have a bit of sanding to make them fit correctly.  As a note to other modelers, tolerances are tight and perhaps a bit of a mismatch can cause things to not fit.

This may not be the best P-51 in this build, but I'll try to finish her to the best of my ability.

Thanks for looking!

Thaks Gary. My kit parts fit was very good. I did not use any putty at all. I did have to thin the pit side frames to get a good fuselage seam line otherwise it was a tad too wide producing a slight gap.

Appreciate the headsup on the brake line detailed pictures you posted. Will come in very handy for an upcoming comission build next month. I was able to VERY carefully remove them and simulate the black rubber part that flexes with the mains and re attached them. I wish I had four hands but finally got them on. Will post pictures once we get back in town.

OK. The 5th ERS Thunderbolt is finally done. Murphy's Law helped with the completion. I tried to paint as much as I could. The invasion stripes, the cowling, the national insignia are all painted. I discovered painting the insignia on the waist to be sure to close the super charger vent doors. Open, they are pretty difficult to paint with stencils. I have two more Thunderbolts in process and I was sure to close those doors. The three letter aircraft code, the tail number and the nose art are aftermarket decals. I should have made a stencil for the "Tony" but didn't see that until I Dullcoted the airplane. Anyway, here it is. Comments welcome. Oh yeah, the guns are brass from Master Model.

Photographed the Mustang out in natural light this morning to capture some of the Alclad metallic reflectivity that is present but subtle consistent with weathering in an operational combat aircraft.

Progress has been slow, but the P-51 is about ready for primer.  The flaps are not attached, but I'll do that after.  Mostly it's just to check seams.  Hope to get to it tomorrow, along with a couple of others.

Got to remember to cover the ID lights.   Wish me luck!

The primer went on without a hitch.  It showed a couple of seams that needed work, so they're puttied and ready to be sanded.  And I remembered to cover the ID lights!

Looks like its about to rain, so any further painting will have to be postponed, but I like how it's turning out so far.

The P-51 has it's base coat laid down.  I used Rust-Oleum Metallic Silver (it says it bonds to plastic) for the base.  Turned out okay.  I actually laid a coating of gloss black over the fuselage and left the wings in grey primer, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.  Spray cans, I suppose.  Still, any variations in tone will have to be done in post work.  Right now, I'm letting the base coat de-gas for a few days, though it seems to be completely dry.

Next up, trying to do invasion stripes on the bottom of the plane.

Thanks for looking!

Welcome, Dave!  I know Bish hasn't been around, and no telling when he will be back (if ever), but Robin Old's P-38 will be a nice addition to the group build.

As for me, work continues on the P-51D.  I've started striping the fuselage and finished up the OD anti-glare.  Now I've got some wing stripes to do (not invasion stripes, thank goodness!)  I'm wondering if it would be best to install the wing flaps now or later?  It's a question of ease of painting a stripe on them.

Shiny, isn't it?

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Gary!!  Your Mustang looks incredible!

I'm thinking about doing Scat II in full invasion stripes and am thinking about building the wings and booms seperately and doing the stripes before joining them together.  I always struggle with getting the recognition stripes lined up correctly on the wings and the tail surfaces.  I haven't built a plane in a long time, so I'm looking forward to the challenge!

Thanks, Dave!  I prefer "it looks okay".  I view other's efforts at P-51s, and I'm almost ashamed to post mine.

I went ahead and attached the flaps.  Then I measure and taped off the wing stripes.  When I peeled the tape up, it left a ragged edge.  I guess it had something to do with the Rustoleum paint and the acrylic flat black.  It didn't adhere well.  So I'll re-tape the edges and try some enamel flat black, first going over it with some light sanding.  I hope it works better this time!

Thanks for looking!

The wing stripes went down okay, what with the sanding and enamel paint.  I must remember that.  Always use enamel on enamel.  Saves headaches.

The wheels and covers are on, and I felt it was about time to start work on the canopy, so I removed the aluminun foil and scrapped off the glue.

Meanwhile, there's the problem of how to do striping on the propeller hub.  If you have any ideas, let me know.  If I could make a circular decal, I'd go that route.

The old Hawk 1/48 P-51D is nearing completion also, but it will be a 4th FS Mustang out of Italy, so doesn't qualify for this GB.

Thanks for looking!

Fearlessfarless, John> Thanks for the comments, guys!  Paint has been the least of my worries on this one.

As for the old Hawk P-51 model, it's also from the 1960s and was one I built in my youth.  I kept it around in hopes that I could restore it one day.  Little did I know that it would be 50 years later!

I also have one of the Testor's repops in the stash.  It's an interesting model, and was considered accurate at the time.  Interesting that it has recessed panel lines on the fuselage and raised panel lines on the wings!  All it needs for updating is pit and wheel bay detail.

I've been away from this thread for way too long. So much great work on display here. GAF, your HAWK Mustang is looking really good. I must have built that kit 3 or 4 times when I was a kid, the last time when I was in the Air Force back in the late '60's.

Here's another Thunderbolt. I finished this one maybe two weeks ago. An Academy P-47D, 82 FS, 78 FG, just after D-Day.

 .

As some Thunderbolts were camouflaged after they arrived in England, this kit is camouflaged RAF Dark Green and Sky. The Invasion Stripes are on the underside of the aircraft only, typical for after D-Day. Everything on this build is painted, even the checkerboard cowling. The only decals are the Curtiss Electric logos on the propeller blades. Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome.

How I would do this I would use the Tamiya thin plastic white tape that is very bendable  and can produce smooth tight curbed lines. Shoot the white color first then yellow and let it dry overnight. White under the yellow will brighten it and cut on additional coats, light tan will darken the yellow a tad too.

Now take the Tamiya plastic tape and carefully create the yellow rings then shoot the black color. Spray light coats to avoid a step between colors when the tape is removed.

I've heard of people defining the lines by rotating the spinner against an exacto knife blade.  I think I used Steve's method on this one, but with thin strips of the Tamiya yellow tape, I can't get the white tape to adhere as well as I like.

Fotofrank> That's another nice looking Jug!  Unusual to see them in British green!  Big Smile

Thanks for the tips, guys!  I ended up using a method similar to what PJ described, but I cut the tape strips about a 1/16 inch wide. This makes them more flexible.  I'll post a photo as soon as the paint dries.  Here's keeping my fingers crossed...

John> That Spitfire looks fantastic!

I finished the striping on the propeller hub, and it didn't turn out too bad.  I've seen better.

The props not attached, just stuck in place.

As of now, I still need to finish up the canopy, and then attach a few minor bits such as lights, antenna and pitot.  Then comes detailing and decaling, followed by weathering.  I've been testing various liquids to see what sort of effect they have on the Rustoleum paint.  So far, I'm on schedule to get it done by July (I hope I haven't jinxed it).

Thanks for looking!

Good morning Bish,

I would like to join your 8th AF GB with the classic Monogram P-38J Lightning in Robin Olds' "Scatt 2" theme.  No construction or painting yet.  Some parts have separated from the trees.  My chief quality assurance officer, Spitfire, reports that the kit is complete, but he will conduct further tests of the box.  This will most likely be an OOB build with a few improvements added.

Thanks for the consideration,

Dave W.

I'm down to final detailing stage before I give it a gloss coat and decals.  Minor touch up work.  Then the hard part --- a wash.

Nothing special to report.  Anything I've done here someone else has a better technique that they've gone over elsewhere.  I've managed to break off the tail wheel, but it was pretty flimsy and might have been expected.  So I cut it off, drilled a hole and made a replacement out of thick wire.  It will be more sturdy, and looks just as good.

The Hawk Mustang is just about finished, and also needs a little detailing.

I've noticed that in all the extant photos of the 352nd FS or the 353 FG, they all were sporting the paper drop tanks.

Thanks for looking!

Hello, it's me again.  I'm here to report on progress for my P-51 Mustang.  Its two steps forward, and one step back, and I'm ready to quit.  I managed to get the major decals on, but also managed to mess up the tail number on the right side.  That, and lot's of little things to do with the paint, has left me depressed and out of sorts.  I need to put this thing aside and work on something else until my motivation returns, so this will be my last update for awhile.

I'll see you around!

Tal Afar Dave,

Sorry I missed the P-38J.  I'll welcome you to the GB since Bish is MIA.  I see Spitfire enjoys the box as much as the model itself.  Good resting area!

Thanks for the welcome GAF and Fearless!  My boy Spitfire has never met a box that he didn't like.  He has to try them all out, large or small.  I have to draw the line though when he starts licking and chewing on the parts!!!

Robin Olds was an incredible, innovative warrior.  I hope I can do his bird justice.....

Great builds everyone; keep at it!!

The decals are sorted and work can continue on the P-51.  The antenna is on and the propeller is glued in.  About all that's left is adding the placards, the navigation lights and finally determining how much of a wash to give it.  I must admit, I'm not very good at it, as you can see by the plating around the exhaust.  I'll keep trying.

Meanwhile, the Hawk P-51 is almost done!  Obviously I enjoy working on 1/48th scale models more than larger.  Big Smile

Thank for looking!

So the P-51 is about finished.  All that's left is a few placards and the drop tanks.  I'm not sure about dirtying it up more than it already is.  Still, it looks too pristine just to let it be, and those were famous last words...

I had hoped to have it done by the end of July and it looks like I'm still on schedule.  Then on to the B-26.

Oh, and the Hawk P-51D is done, for those of you who care.  It represents the bird of Capt. R. A. Karr, from the 4th FS, 52nd FG out of Italy.  I wanted a yellow-tailed bird and the 4th FS seemed to be the only one.  I don't know why I painted it so back in the day.

Thanks for looking!

Time for another update.  The P-51 is about finished.  I can tell from the photo that it still needs a bit of work, but that's minor.  What I've started work on is the hardstand, which turned out better than I had hoped (and that wasn't much of a hope).  I had some foam board that I painted gray, then cut out a circle and it's entrance ramp to mask, then painted a light earth color.   I used white glue and sprinkled it with grass.  So far, so good.

I intend to sprinkle some gravel around, perhaps making a pathway off the hardstand.  Also, the grass should be "brown", so perhaps a coating of a light sand on the grass (since this was supposedly the middle of winter).  I guess we'll see.  Meanwhile, there's decisions to make as to whether to attach the drop tanks or leave them loose, and cutting a slot in the canopy to install an aerial wire.

Well, it's a good thing we have till the end of the year!

Thanks for looking.

I think if the antenna wire is installed there is a roller in the bracket.

John,

Well, the problem is that the aerial wire should pass through the canopy to run to the radio inside.  However, they forgot to include an opening in the canopy.  I'm going to try to use a hot needle (or x-acto blade) to melt through the plastic and rig it that way.  Like everything else, I'm nervous about doing something like that.

A very small burr in a dremel at high speed and low pressure might be best, the friction generates the heat to melt through.

John>  As to the aerial wire, it became a moot point.  I learned that most P-51Ds of the 8th Air Force didn't have aerial wires.  Learn something new everyday!

Well, it's finally finished, or finished as in “I don't want to work on this anymore”. This 1/32nd scale P-51 has led me on some interesting adventures in modeling. Can't say I enjoyed them.

First some history. Arthur C. Cundy Jr. was born in Birmingham, Alabama on the Fourth of July, 1924. His father was a veteran of the 1st World War. His mother, Virginia Key, served as a recruiting officer in the WACs. She was a direct descendant of Francis Scott Key, who wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner".

Cundy joined the USAAF in 1943, and graduated from flight school in 1944. He arrived in England in August, assigned to the 352nd Fighter Squadron of the 353rd Fighter Group, based at Raydon in East Anglia and reported to the unit on August 21. The 353rd was the fourth fighter group assigned to the Eighth Air Force, and had become operational in August 1943, just in time to participate in the Regenseburg-Schweinfut mission. At the time Cundy arrived, the group was still flying the P-47 Thunderbolt.

The 353rd re-equipped with the P-51D beginning in October, and was fully operational on the Mustang by mid-November. Cundy scored his first victory, a Bf-109, on November 27. He shot down a Fw-190 the next month. By January 1945, he had moved up to element leader and been promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

On March 2, 1945, Cundy claimed two Fw-190s and one Bf-109 to become an ace with a total of six victories.

On March 11, Cundy was flying P-51D Mustang SX-D 44-14963 “Miss Jackie II,” the personal aircraft of 1st Lieutenant Lindsay W. Grove, when it developed a coolant leak over the North Sea as the group flew outbound toward Germany. Cundy reported he was heading back to England, and was last seen diving through the undercast. His remains have never been recovered.

I've chosen to portray his aircraft as it “might” have appeared in December / January 44/45. The paint scheme changed over the few months in service, so there's some doubt about what it actually looked like. I went by this photo and guessed on tail and wing markings, though it's a good guess.

Note I didn't detail the aircraft as others have. The build was straight out of the box.

Now about the model.

The Good:

  1. It's about half the price of a Tamiya kit. If you don't want to detail an engine and open panels then by all means this is for you.

  2. Detail is good on pit and surface detail . You can look at "Plasticjunkie's" P-51 NA-5 to see what can be done with it. Sufficient parts are available to make different versions (3 canopys, 2 seats, etc.)

  3. Sufficient decals are there to build two versions. I didn't use all of them as I figured they would be painted over as time went on. They went on and laid down nicely, so I have no complaints about them.

  4. Fit is tight.  I had to sand the bottom of the cockpit some to get the wings to fit.  Watch out for assembling parts and one out of alignment can mess you up, but at least it cuts down on putty!

The Bad:

  1. Canopies sometimes are bad. Ask "Plasticjunkie" about his troubles. Also, canopies are not wide enough to show closed, but are okay if shown in the open position. You might want to check if you have one.

  2. The landing gear is weak, and metal ones are recommended. Ask me how I know!

  3. The instructions are poor. It doesn't tell you about parts, and you have to do some research to determine what to use. I know more about P-51s than before, at least.

Anyway, that's about it. I want to thank Bish for running this GB (wherever he is).

Thanks for looking!

Thanks!  I know the best thing about this model is that it's done.

I wonder if anyone else will build something for this GB, what with Bish being MIA.

Gary, sorry it gave you bad thoughts!  It's still a nice Mustang.  Revell really did mouse up that canopy.  I've got some old Squadron canopies in the stash I will use, who needs the grief.

I'm scheduled to do a B-24D, but I am thinking positive and will wait til Martin comes back.

No problem, John!  As to the canopies, I can't say with certitude that they're all bad.  If I had known (or realized) the problem on the width, I could have corrected that.  But I don't know if Mustang canopies were supposed to be like that.  It just seemed too narrow to me.

Keep thinking positive!  Perhaps Bish will return, but if he doesn't in a couple of months, I may just set up an alternate thread for the completed builds.  He can take back over when he finally returns.  Let's hope I don't have to do that!  Big Smile

Great looking Mustang Gary, looks super sharp. I enjoyed building, detailing and painting mine but didn’t notice the landing gear issues you encountered. I did have to thin out the cockpit framing to allow the fuselage sides to close so don’t know if you encountered that. I upgraded mine to a NA10 cause I like the filleted tail and had a better decal selection. The clear canopy is indeed a MAJOR negative but after getting 2 replacements from Revell looking the same I simply gave up and ignore it.

Again, great finish to your entry. Beer
