When you drove ahead of one in a column, dont you think they looked like a kids toy pull phone? All it needed was some big goofy eyes in place of the headlights.

Looking forward to your build on this Redleg. Certainly a vehicle long overlooked in mainstream styrene.Yes

LMAO.....never thought of it that way but yep...just remember the maintenance nightmare and how LOUD they were.....yet it was the best off road vehicle...it could go anywhere!!

I somehow don't think the styrene folks will be making this anytime soon (until I am about 3/4 through this resin build...with my luck!!). I is about as mainstream as the Ontos but does not have all the nice barrels!

Thanks for stopping by

Hello Mike!

It's so good to see you taking a shot at the Gamma Goat! I have to tell you your choice of subjects really impresses me, most of the time you tackle subjects I'd gladly do myself too! I'll be watching, good luck with your project, and have a nice day

Drove a Goat in convoys many miles...  It was the most comfortable military vehicle, driver-wise, I ever drove... But LOUD!!!!   Always wanted to put a red star on ours, the thing NEVER "looked American"...

LMAO on the "pull-toy" ref... Yer RIGHT!, lol...

You going for the "Battery Commo Goat " or a "Prime Mover for the M102 in the 82 AB" look, Redleg?

Hans- Actually......this will be the FDC Goat....I will be mounting antennas on the trailer......trying to decide if I go all out with an ANVRC 12 system in a rack and the charts laid out for view. If I can get the vehicle together with a minimal PIA...I may spend the time to set up the Funny Duck Club!!

Thanks for stopping in and the questions

That is cool.  I remember seeing them in Germany when my Dad was stationed there.  Don't remember them being all that loud, but it's been 30 years and my memory fades.  After the M60s drove out the gate, everything else seemed quiet.

I look forward to seeing more pictures.

Tonka - Thanks for the visit. The bench always has something on it. Now, I am anal....only ONE kit at a time and no new kit comes near the bench until the last on is DONE Geeked When a kit is done I take a day to clean the bench and the area around it, the move on. I normally begin research on my next build while working on the current build, thus  I have started lookng at the next one already....

That's just me!

As far as the USMC Goat....of course....it had bilge pumps Big Smile...a bad ride is always better than a good walk Wink

Bob - Actually the kit is new...just out this past March. It is a resin kit and....not for the faint of heart but....it's a Goat!!

Mike,, Wish I had the discipline to have just one on the bench at a time..I always finish them but do so in stages... Doing a dio of the Chosin Reservoir march by the 1st Marine Division for the Korean War GB...finishing a 120MM fig for it also,, plus a Revolutionary War militia fig for a friend, 1 car and 3 planes...I punish myself!!

By the way just saw a Roco 1/87 scale Gamma goat on ebay,,,HMM another interesting dio idea...

Sign me up as a Monk as well then! One at a time for me too!

I have to say that with Autos, however, it sometimes pays to have one thing drying and gassing out while you work on another. I found that that does indeed extend the time it takes both projects to get finished to what seems like an inordinately long period.

This is a really interersting choice, Mike! I'm always impressed at someone taking on a full resin kit1

Karl - Thanks for stopping in.....I can understand those LOOOONG dry times with gloss.

As far as an all resin kit.....as you like to say, this hobby is, for a large part art.....just think of resin as a different medium......oil instead of pencil...

Some of us broaden our horizon with "autos" others with "resin".....just a different stroke

Thanks for the confidence.

Monks of modelling,, never thought of it that way,, you guys could have a club!!Big Smile

Being a grunt and a Marine on top of that,,I tend to shoot from the hip,,

I work with engineers all day and have several working for me,, my 'non-anal-ness' drives them crazy!

But I totally agree we should all build because its FUN! And enjoy and learn from the other styles...

1/87 is small,, especially if I had to put the bilge pumps in...

As always look forward to more pics and following the build...

As far as the Funny Duck Club.....leaning heavy to yes...I have all the items as I scratched together a "kit" that I made from scratch for someone a few years back....its time to dust it off and build it.

It is where I got my start using sticks & charts to calculate the ballistics....Eventually there was a computer called FADAC

I won't do a FADAC but I will try to get the rest

Summer chores and other family outings take’s a toll on the bench time, but I found some time this week

I did a little more work on the power section. I mounted the bumper, then PE headlight supports which I upgraded by adding the 3 nut heads on each side using PE nuts. I also added the back support for the cab cover using .040 styrene coated wire.

The cargo section needs a lot of work. The kit does not come with bows and the cargo sides in resin are not the greatest.

First I made the cargo side railing using .060 styrene channel.  After gluing those in place, I fabricated the front cargo railing which is made from .040 styrene coated wire. The kit has the front the same as the sides but the actual Goat used channel for the sides and tubing for the front.

The bows were also fabricated from .040 styrene coated rod. These were all drilled and the glue into place. The “rod boxes” which is actually the bow holder on the full scale, were fabricated using some .060 channel.

The reflectors are made using .020 punched styrene. First a lower layer circle then an upper layer circle with the center punched out. There are 4 reflectors. Two in the rear and two on the sides.

That’s it for now. More scratch work coming

As always, your comments either positive or negative are always welcome.

Hans - Jon is a great guy..... but WARNING This kit is not for the faint of heart. Much of the assembly must be figured out from reviewing actual 1 to 1 photos. It is a nice resin kit BUT the directions are essentially non existant.

What I am posting here will help but as you pull the lanyard this, the kit is a "modelers" kit not an "assemblers" kit

Mike,,great job on the bows..

Can I ask a question??  You stated that the bows are "styrene covered rod"....How did you do that?

I am trying to bend regular styrene rod now for the bows on my GMC deuce and 1/2 and having no luck..thinking of inserting a wire into a hollow rod,,is that how you did it?

Any help is appreciated,,,, I really do learn a lot from your builds!

Thanks

Styrene-covered rod is available from Evergreen or at your LHS... It's simply wire covered with styrene... It bends fairly  easily, holds its shape, and is gluable with regular modeled cement..

Kevin - My buddy Hans alredy gave you the message. Evergreen or Plastistruct, whatever flavor you LHS has or Plastistruct will take mail orders.

As Hans stated, it is gluable, holds paint  and for some items like bows, I prefer it. I have a round head needle nose and just hold and bend. The only thing is don't squeeze too hard where you are holding as it will dent the styrene coating.

Hans - Thanks for the message pick up.....As far as buying the kit.....your not cheap, just frugal!!

Marc - Thanks, love to be scratching....I think it is the engineer in me!

No sweat... Scratchbuilding materials are my life, lol...  I've built a number of supprt equipment items from it and a few other details like truck bows with it... I used it for the support system of the TOC extentsion of an M577, truck bows, aircraft folding engine hoists, aircraft maintnence stands, even gun barrels.. The latter I did by cutting a piece of the rod, then removing a bit of the styrene (like stripping an electrical wire), then sliding the plastic forward a skoshi-bit to leave a hollow tube, and gluing the wire into a drilled hole.

It's great stuff if you need to make something with a tubular frame that has a lot of strength, but don't want to solder brass rod...  I usually just stock up on various sizes of Evergreen rod & strip avery time I go the LHS... It's cheap, and you'll always find something you need it for...

Using it here to make the turret basket for a Panzer IV, along with a medicine-bottle cap and some screen for treadplate:

Ok... Done hijacking your thread, 'Leg...

I was off on vacation for the week of July 4, now I am trying to get back into the routine.

I was able to get some work done this weekend. First the trailer section was completed. This included mounting the kit supplied tail lights, PE bumpers and suspension system for the wheels. The suspension is quite a job and the instructions are absolutely NO help. I spent a bunch of time looking at the 1 to 1 photos to figure it out.

On the scratch side, I added the airborne lifting rings. There are two on each side and two in the back. These are .040 styrene rod with the loops made from 26 gauge wire. The rod is drilled and the wire mounted through the holes. I also added the canvas tie down hooks from some leftover PE, four on both sides and two in the back.

With the tow hitch mounted in the front the trailer is ready for priming

I worked on the tires which needed a bunch of sanding to get rid of the center mold seam and then to fill some small air bubble voids. The tires were a couple of hours just to get ready for the paint booth.

Back on the power section, I mounted the kit supplied wind shield and I am working on scratching the windshield supports. You can see the styrene coated wire on either side. I also mounted the kit supplied engine compartment latches and handles.

I added a lower access plate on the driver’s side using Archer surface details.

I still have all the front turn signals and BO lights to mount along with the suspension for the 4 power section wheels. That is where I am at for the moment.

As always, your comments either positive or negative are always welcome.

Awesome work, awesome subject  (as usual!) Mike! Another woman swooner/show stopper for sure!

Had a mutual friend here yesterday for a short visit. Hoping the next time, that you'll be here as well. At least for a short visit, long enough for some old fashioned boot in the (my) *** motivation.

Thanks,

Mike,

HOLY @%#$!!!! Man, you have really gone to town on this baby since I've last looked in! This is a spectacular project thus far, and a real tour-de-force of resin modeling--NEVER easy--and detailing! The unpainted model looks formidable so far! Great work! Stick out tongue

I give you secondary and additional kudo's for prevailing over and through this resin build. I know how difficult these kits can sometimes be--and the lack of help form the instructions doesn't help!

Kevin - Thanks....I know you "appreciate" the goat Wink as far as motivation....flip through all the great pics of your builds on your web site...short of the smell of muzzle blast, that should help!!

Karl - You are too kind. Resin is a "horse of another color". The kit is good but the directions are almost non existant. Thank God for the TM and some good web sites.

Gino - Thanks....yep, it won't be long and it will be "prime time"...I hear the airbrush calling.

Thanks everyone

Great modeling!

I kind of think like this: Shale-and-bake kits are fun, but making something out of next to nothing is a lot more rewarding, which looks like exactly what's happening here.

Well summer is defiantly getting in the way of building. Plus family outings and finally working on what I promised myself I would finish this year, my website has slowed this build down. With that said, here is some progress.

I finished the exterior details. I scratch the electrical jumping jack using some leftover PE for the base plate and.040 hex rod for the jack (far right in front of driver).  I then fabricated the air lift lugs using the same method as on the trailer. They are mounted on either side of the wind shield.

The BO light for the kit was poor so I substituted one from the parts bin.  The horn was…ok so I used the kit supplied. I will have to cast a set of turn signals as the kit supplied are incorrect. I will add those later

Next I began the task of assembling the suspension. The rear is fixed and a bit simpler with just two shocks and the drive shaft. That fit together fairly well. The front is the same as on the trailer with the drum supported by the upper and lower leaf, a spring to the lower leaf, drive shaft to the drum and steering arm to the front of the drum. The instructions are non existent on this and the suspension was assembled based on research and the TM.

Assembling the front suspension is a royal PITA and take a few days as a part has to fully dry before moving to the next item

Now it was time for some paint. With all the heat and humidity, even in an AC cooled house, I needed to pick a good day.  First everything was washed, well rinsed and allowed to dry for a few days. Then everything was primed with Tamiya Flat Black. Any problem spots, gels, voids, etc that showed were filled and another light coat of black put on to give uniformity. After a good drying, everything was painted with PolyScale Forest Green 505388 which is the dark green for the MERDOC camouflage pattern. Here is the power section.

Here is the trailer section

Well that’s it for now….MERDOC camo work next.

As always, your comments either positive or negative are always welcome.

Camouflage…..MERDOC style.

First I masked the trailer internal and the bows on the power unit, the driver/passenger area. Then using Silly Putty to give a hard edge I set up the camouflage pattern for the other dominant color, in this case Earth Yellow FS 33245 which I used a 50/50 mix Tamiya Dark Yellow and Desert Yellow XF-59 & 60.

Here is the power unit

I the masked small areas for Black using Tamiya Flat black and a light sand FS 30277 using Tamiya Buff. Again, I used Silly Putty to get that hard edge for each color. After some overspray cleanup, here is the power unit

In between paint drying, I finished up the cleanup on the tires. After a 50/50 mix of Flat Black and NATO Black for that rubber look, the rims were painted with PolyScale Forest Green 505388.

I need to finish up the trailer minor colors and assemble the driving area next.

I was born in Texas and raised in North Dakota being polite and respectful are key drivers for me.  I watch how some of you talk to each other and I gurantee that would only happen with me once I would be a ghost.

That being said I used to use that same paint combination for tires and I was reading I believe one of Michaels threads and he advocated using floquil weathered black. http://www.micromark.com/FLOQUIL-WEATHERED-BLACK-PAINT,6958.html

I gave it a try about a year ago and it is wonderful.  They make a Grimey Black that is great as well.  The paint is a little hot so give it a couple days to set and then seal with a flat clear before weathering.  The results are worth the effort IMHO of course.

How is that for "letting it hang out"?  Wink

Ed - Love it...I like ALL the comments, it allows everyone to learn, teach and be a part  of it.

I have heard some things about the Floquil weathered black. I personally try to stay with all acrylics in my case. I do use enamel/lacqor for metallics but colors I try to stay with only acrylic.

I have not found (though I must admit I have not looked) an acrylic answer to my 50/50 mix for tires. For those who are enamel/lacqor users you could try either.

The nice part of the 50/50 mix is they are flat to begin with!!

Now it is always fun to pile on...the most "stuff" is happening at the bottom of the pile!!Wink

Ed, Thanks for letting it "hang out" Ick!

Question for you??  Using silly putty,,do you just do the outlines of the next color with silly putty then use tape on the rest of the vehicle? Have never tried the silly putty method yet but thinking about it..

Kevin – OK, I start with a silly putty “worm” and outline the edges. Once it is in place, I may use a silly putty pancake to cover the larger areas. As I finish up the trailer, I will take some shots and post them in my next update.

Mike - just can't wait what you're going to do to your model next! Good luck and have a nice day

I made some good progress this weekend.

First, a few people asked about the Silly Putty masking technique. So if you want hard edge camouflage, as most MERDOC patterns were, use this method.

Step one, roll out a small bit of silly putty and roll it on the cutting board to create a strand of spaghetti from the putty.  Using small sections no more than 2 inches long, outline the pattern for the area to be painted. To get a good hard edge gently push down. Do not totally flatten but you should see the bottom inside edge

Step two, with the outline complete use painters tape or rolled flat putty pancakes to mask the larger area.

Step three, paint. Make sure you have totally painted the spot!!

Lastly, unmask, shortly after painting. I use acrylic so dry time is not a problem. If your putty is over small details and PE and it is warm, a short 5 minute trip in the fridge prior to unmasking. Pull the putty back slowly and roll it as you remove it.

TaDa….a nice hard edge camo

OK back to the build. I weathered in the wheel wells where it would be more difficult after the wheels were installed. After weathering with a mix of MIG Dried Mud and Industrial Dirt I removed the excess pigment and installed the wheels

I also installed the headlights and PE headlight guards.

Most of my other progress was made in the wood shop, making the base, staining and sealing it. I also made up the custom bumper numbers, using the 2/320FA “Ball of the Eagle” from the 101 ABN. The future is drying so next up will be applying the decals and detailing the crew compartment. Plus, working on the base while model items dry

As always, your comments either positive or negative are always welcome.

Mike,,it looks great and thanks for the 'How to' on the silly putty technique. You make it look easy!

I picked some up after your last post and will try it on mt next camo pattern. Looks like it beats cutting up tape, using post-its and even parafilm.

Always appreciate the learnings!

Ahhh…back to the bench after vacation….somewhat. Still trying to get caught up on chores and everything else, but I did make some progress on the details.

The driver’s compartment is sparse from the kit so I made some additions. Using Archer transfers dashboard gauges, I filled in the respective instruments. After the gages dried, I gave them a quick coat of future then a drop of CA glue to create a lens for each gauge.

Also using Archer transfers placard set, I added some of the “required” dash and shifter information and SN placards.

The kit comes with the windshield…but no clear for glass. I cut and added some .010 clear for the windshield.

After adding the kit shifters, some detail dash painting, this is what the dash looked like

The seats that come with the kit do not include cushions. I made cushions using air dry clay. After it was sized and shaped a fiberglass fabric is placed on top and wetted. Rubbing it on the surface and then removing the fabric leaves the fabric imprint in the clay. After the clay dried it was painted with Tamiya Khaki Drab. This shot the drivers back cushion is left out so you can see the difference.

The bumper decals for the front were added. These still need to be dulled.

On the side I made up the “NO STEP” (the kit does not include any decals) for the side of the bilge pump. Using the kit supplied PE, I then added the restraining straps for the bilge pump.

I am down to the short strokes at this point. Still need the steering wheel, add a chain and lock around the steering wheel, wipers, and front turn signals, then it is on to weathering and mounting.

Trying to get it done for AMPS East at the end of the month!!  Hopefully I don’t get inundated with chores!

As always, your comments either positive or negative are always welcome.

Well  yesterday was my 28 wedding anniversary and really it is 38 as my better half and I went out for 10 years before getting married. The festivities slowed down bench time but not totally!!.

In order to cover the rear trailer section, I created a canvas. Using some airplane tissue, I measure and cut the canvas from the tissue leaving some excess for the edges. Next, creating small folds at each edge, I cut sections of ship rigging as the rope and filled the folds which were then sealed using landscape cement.

While that was drying I cut the front drape canvas from the tissue and applied it using landscape cement. With the front drape in place, I began installing the main canvas using landscape cement and working it down onto the bows. Once on the last work was the wrap around on the front and back, again held in place with landscape cement.

Well after all that, here is the result

In between all the drying, I worked on some of the details for the front power unit. The kit was missing the front turn signals so I cast a set of turn signals and the side markers.

The bridge maker needed detail. The raised number cards and holder were cut from some label paper, applied and then painted. The numbers were applied from Archer number set, coated with future and then with flat.

The windshield wipers were from the PE set, and were painted the applied.

Inside I used silver leaf to create the mirrors and black marker to highlight the edge of the mirror.

The chain is from Michaels, painted steel using Alclad Steel, cut to length and glued to the floor and around the steering wheel. I also added a pad lock from a spare PE set.

As you can see by the earlier shots, the goat is in the process of being weathered. First the tires were weathered using MIG Dried Mud. Next the underside was given a coat of pigment for weathering. Then the unit was glued to the mounting base.

With the model on the base, details were pin washed using MIG Dark Wash. Then the model was washed with a coat of MIG Light Grey for Green. Next began the pigment using MIG Dried Mud.

I still have some touch up and cleanup of the dust but here is where the goat is now.

I will post final “fire for effect” shots later this week….hopefully before leaving for AMPS East

Deliciously outstanding there Mike!!! Love the canvas cover but the chain and padlock made me chuckle!  Nice touch that you never see in 35th scale (or any scale for that matter!)  and once again, you've caused another flashback to another time and place.

Happy anniversary too!!! I don't know how she's done it but she must be one fine woman! (I've got me one of them too!)

Have a good show this week!!!

Steve - Thanks....the fun part of the chain was not loosing the key......That and the noise as it banged around the floor pan...Surprise    Looking forward to seeing you this weekend!!

Kevin - Thanks....I said I used Dried Mud....not SandConfused...LOL...    It is always fun to build something from the past that you lived!!

Tony - Thanks.....ahhh, the lens secret.....paint the lens area with Alclad Aluminum or a shiny metallic. After it is dry I use Tamiya Clear Orange. I do not thin the jar and these Tamiya clear colors are thick. I carefully apply them to the lens starting in the middle and "pushing" it to the edges. I leave it as a "thick" coat of paint.

Let dry at least a day and you have a clear amber lens with a reflective background!! TADA!!

Works great for me!

Thanks guys
