Putting feelers out for a Kursk GB
Posted by tigerman on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 9:30 PM
Yeah, I know, Tigerman and another GB idea. At least they aid my getting something done. I thought it over and others were initially interested, so any takers? I'm seeing plenty of Soviet armor: T-34's KV's, SP-guns. For the Germans: Panthers, Tigers,  Pz IIIs, Pz IVs, Brummbars, Ferdinands, etc. Thought of kicking it off July 5th, the first day of battle. I'm leaning to my Trump KV I or Dragon Brummbar. Plenty of time to get things together.

Trying to think what I have in my currant stash that this would maybe motivate me to complete. Think All I have that may have been there is one of Dragon's Marder IIs. If i remember right there were a handful of marders. Anyone correct me on this?

I've got a Dragon T-34 sitting in the stash just waiting for a GB to happen....might need some assistance from the resident experts for historic accuracy....

Funny you should mention that....no, it's a T-34/76, model 1941. My problem is finding resources to confirm that there were model 41's @ Kursk and individual markings (and aftermarket availability).

Any input from the resident experts is welcome.

Even though I'm up to my eyeballs in GBs, there is no way I would be able to pass this one up.  Count me in!

There is a Tiger I scheme from the Das Reich at Kursk that I've been wanting to try for a long time.  When you're ready to get a roster going, put me down for a 1/35 Tamiya Tiger I in "Das Reich" markings. Cool [8D]

My Dragon Brummbar won't work, it's a Late version w/steel wheels. I'm going with the KV. Might have to get some transfers and Migs for this one.

Don't forget halftracks and arty.

This looks like an interesting build, and I think I'd like to try it. Got a few armor kits sitting around and this would motivate me to get started on one. Now here's where my armor ignorance comes into play. I know that my T34-85 is out, probably along with my Marder III, Panther G, and Panzer IV H. That leaves me an early Tiger I, a Flak 88, or a Kubelwagon. Any chance that one of those qualify, or do I need to hit the LHS (not that I would really mind Wink [;)] )?

Nope it's 1/35th. I will have a set up of 4 foot X 24 feet when all is said and done.

Cool then I'll use this as inspiration to do the Marder II. Since I got back into modeling a couple monthes ago I'v still yet to finish one 100%. Keep redoing same ones to work techniques. This should help!

All three should qualify. Depends which Marder III you have. The Russian 76mm? yeah, you need a Panther D and a Panzer IV G or less.

If anyone has a good reference of vehicles, by all means please share. Katyusha (Stalin Organ) would be another great Russian vehicle. Italeri makes one.

Been sorting thru various web sites for pics of T-34/76's @ Kursk and finding a couple with winter white wash still applied-is this realistic for a July time frame?  If so, it makes my task of finding valid turret numbers/markings easier...Whistling [:-^]

I have a great book that documents the battle of Kursk in pictures.  I'll flip through it tonight Bob and see if I can find any pics of T-34/76's with a bit of whitewash left on them.  Smile [:)]

Thanks Scott-that and/or any turret numbers/lettering scheme's, etc that can be 'hand crafted'.  I could always go with the captured German T-34/76, but I figure that there will be enough German armour in this one anyway...however, a German camo T-34 could be fun...Whistling [:-^]

Eric, it's the Sd.Kfz138 7.62cm Pak36(r) auf Gw.38(t), (whatever THAT means!) I was getting dizzy just typing it! LOL!

Maybe now I know why I build mostly aircraft....it's so much easier just to say 'Nieuport 17'. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Should I???   Ahhh why not?!?!  The Battle of Kursk has always been a favorite WWII interest of mine!  If you decide to go ahead with this GB put me down for a Dragon Panther D.  Echelon has a set of decals that includes Kursk markings.  I might do Ernst Barkmann's vehicle, but someone is doing the same thing for the Panzer Aces GB.   Eric, is the duration of this GB going to be long or short?

You mean the Sd.Kfz. 139 ?    The only marder III equipped with the Russian 7.62cm PaK36(r).

It was produced from April to October 1942.     Majority fought in Russia.

I believe all Marder III's qualifies.    Marder III H produced from November 1942 to April 1943, and Marder III M between April 1943 to May 1944.   Kursk was in July 1943.

Not sure if they were all present, but the production dates fit.

Ooooops. Yep, that's the one. Thanks!Thumbs Up [tup]  That'll be my contribution (although I would have LOVED to do a Panzer IV H! Wink [;)] since I got all the goodies for that one....the Marder III will be pretty much OOB except for the appropriate markings).

According to my Squadron PZ IV book, it says that the H appeared in the spring of 43. So, I'd assume that they had to have had some there.

Ernest, I'm thinking a 3-4 month window, so as to keep the interest going.

Cool. So if the P. IV H was indeed at Kursk, then that's my choice. If not, then jot me down for the Marder III 38(t) with the 7.62cm gun.

Unless someone can prove otherwise, I say go for it.
