Land Rover Series III LWB

Oh Boy!

 I love the way this is going together. You know Wimbledon White was a FORD P/U Base color for more years than I care to count. When repairing these vehicles it was the easiest to match as well.

The SIII air intake hose is actually 'U' shaped and runs from the front of the heater housing to the heater fan outlet on the front of the fan housing. The intake grill on the left side wing has a foam seal between the inside of the wing to the inlet in the center of the heater fan. You might not be able to see all of this with the wing in place. Thanks T-B!  Did you know that white is the most difficult color to match?  There are literally thousands of shades of white and matching that color is extremely tough to do and do correctly.

I have done a lot of research on this vehicle and I have decided when I first started this build, was to build this as the instructions say with a few easy added details from my research.  My research show many different configurations and many different options based on where the vehicle is sold and what it is used for.  Bob, I appreciate your tips and the fact that you fancy yourself a Land Rover enthusiast.  At this stage, I am not making anymore changes.     

We've had about a dozen various Series Rovers and none were the same. We still have two 109s, the wife's '68 SIIA tropical top three door modified with a Rover V8 and 5 speed, and my '80 SIII soft top now with a 300TDI turbo diesel. The references are just outside.... Bob

The Story

McNally drives down to the Petro Station to fill up the Land Rover.  He talks to the Station owner about anyone who he may have seen in the area that he doesn't know.  The Station owner tells McNally of a man who has a camp up in the woods about 1/2 kilometer up from the Station.  McNally wants to leave the Landy at the Station and the owner says he can.  He walks up to the camp and he finds that no one is there.

He looks around the empty camp and he finds a bag with bloody bandages and this must be the man he shot at the farm when he was attacked.  McNally would like to have stayed at the camp and wait for the man to return, but he had to get back to the farm to help with the harvest.  He will stop by early tomorrow and and wait for the camper to come out.

The Build

I had blacked out the edges of the windows with a black Sharpie and I let this dry for a bit and when I added my Mod Podge to hold the windows in place, the black ink ran.  I removed the windows and the dried Mod Podge and will consider my options of adding the black trim around the windows.

Bummer.  That was my plan as well, though I use testors clear parts glue.  Maybe something hotter in modgepodge?

It could be hotter and melted the Sharpie ink.  I'm thinking of using the Sharpie on the outside of the window and using the Mod Podge on the inside of the window.  We shall see...

The Story

In the morning, McNally drives down to the Petro Station and he waits for the man to come down from his camp.  After several minutes, he sees the man stumble out of the bush and he has a slight limp and he walks along the road.  McNally stays well behind him as the man limps along and he stops at the General Store and goes inside.  He walks inside and goes to the counter and he asks about the man who had walked in and he is told that the limping man works in the store.  He asks if he could talk to him for a moment and the store owner calls the man up front.

The man comes up front and he sees McNally and he takes off running out to the back of the store and out the back door.  McNally runs outside and he tackles the man and he cuffs him.  He yells for the store owner to call the Police and the Police arrive a moment later and the man is taken into custody.

The Build

I used the black Sharpie on the outside edge of the windows and Mod Podge as my adhesive on the inside and I like the effect.  It took one or two trips on the edges with the Sharpie and it got nice and black like a rubber seal.  Now to try this on the front and rear windows.

Turned out really nice.

The Story

Agent Barchans of the NCA arrives at the Police Station and he is surprised to see Senior Headquarters Supervisor Peter Duncledge standing at the counter.  Barchans demands to know what is going on and who and why was this person arrested for the murder of Alfred McCann.  Duncledge explains the gold coin that was stolen from McCann, the found murder weapon with traces of McCann's blood on it, the attack on McNally at the Burrows Farm, finding Declan Thomas limping with some of the buckshot still in him and finding his camp.  Declan Thomas had copped to the murder since he owed money to a loan shark and the loan shark had threatened his life and he was desperate for cash.  He knew McCann had the coin and it would be good for some quick cash.

Duncledge also cites that Barchans has had a bad record of pissing off County and Town Police officers.  Barchans is to return to headquarters for displenary actions.  McNally turns in the Glock he was loaned with the box of shells that he never used.

The Build

The Land Rover is almost done!  The engine is finished.  The hood didn't fit flush until I lower the distributor.  The vents for the secondary roof was fitted.

The bumps on the rooftop sunsheet are not the actual vents but are bulges to allow the vents to open. The vents are on the lower rooftop and open into the air space between the lower roof and the sunsheet and there are no rubber seals on the vent bulges. The vents can actually remain open in the rain, and we typically open them in late spring and they remain open until the weather turns cooler. Bob

    Now see! There is a practical use for everything! My 1960? Rover swb.had those vents and I never closed them. Flow through ventilation for sure!

The Story

McNally spent a couple of days getting the harvest to market and he paid the workers.  Most of the harvest equipment was maintenanced and put up for the coming winter with the exception of anything that was needed for chores.  Angus was given driving duties to take McNally to the airport for his trip home and included a stop at the Police Station to say goodbye to his friend, PC Dunbarton.  After arriving at the airport, Angus was a little tired and he would rest a bit before driving home to Alston-At-Harkness.  Goodbyes at the flight line for the two old friends and McNally boards the plane for his trip home.

After stopping over for an hour in Greenland for refueling, the plane lands at Boston's Logan Airport and McNally disembarks the plane, goes through the TSA check-in and Passport Control.  With his luggage in tow, McNally grabs a cab and is driven home to Charlestown and home.  Once in the house, he calls Angus to tell him that he was home and the flight was good.  If Angus ever needed the help again, he was to call McNally first.

I have finished my Land Rover Series III LWB.  I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to view and to comment on my WIP.

Pretty complicated build, lot's of options.

I like it. This kit has the deluxe bonnet, but also used was a dished deluxe bonnet with the spare tire mount and a flat razor front edged bonnet with and without spare tire mount. The short wheel based Monogram kit has the dished deluxe bonnet but I can't recall what bonnet is used on the Italeri 109 three door or soft top kits. The "station wagon" labeled trucks with the extra seating in the bed usually had the spare tire mounted on the rear door. If the door upper mounting was used the top of the tire blocked a bit of the view out the back window. If the door lower mounting was used it interfered with the typical trailer hitch mount. The three door or pickup 109 had a spare tire mount which located the tire in a dished panel on top of the wheel well in the pickup bed. The short wheel based trucks had a spare tire mount in the bed on the aft side of the bulkhead behind the seats. My short wheel based SIII 88 had spare tire mounts on the bonnet, on the bulkhead in the bed and on the rear rear door but I am sure previous owners added to the original spare location. These trucks can be configured in many ways and mixing the bits from the Revell 109 and Italeri 109 you can have a soft to on the 109 five door. I'll need to fab a pickup cab for one of my builds.    I do like this auto. I like the colors and the way it just looks sitting there. I just wish I had thought of it, before, I placed my order on line for another car. Oh Well, on my Christmas Wish List.

Thanks John, Bob and T-B!  One of the things I should have done to begin with was to choose a version to build.  As I went along building this kit, I was confronted with the RHD or LHD, standard or deluxe interior, what country to represent this build in, just to name a few.  These choices affect the outcome of the model and it did frustrate me for a little bit.  Once I figured out how I want this build to look, it was easy to build.

Well, I knew I had misplaced the fifth tire and I found it.  Apprently, I put it away in one of my parts drawers.  I added the extra wheel and glued them to the hood of my Land Rover Series III LWB.  The hood is not made for this application, but the spare tire looks good up there just like the rest of the pictures I have seen.  I added a piece of guitar wire for the antenna.

The tire looks 'right' up there, and I've seen several trucks where the owner mounted the spare onto the non-dished deluxe bonnet. The dish would only lower the tire an inch or two anyway. Bob

Excellent build!  Great color choices and love the spare tire mounted on the hood.  Hoping that Revell will come out with a two door version soon.

It was available as a fire engine, and as a soft top and a standard non tropical top hardtop. While a curbside kit it could be combined with Revell's 109. The old Monogram 1/24 Series 3 88 two / three door hardtop shows up once and a while on the auction site but often sells high. The Monogram kit is a good one and has the 4 cylinder engine. I hope for it to be re-released. Bob

Good find Mike!  And I thought long and hard on where to put the spare on my kit, but I went with the roof.  Looks awesome on the bonnet ;)

The old Monogram 1/24 Series 3 88 two / three door hardtop shows up once and a while on the auction site but often sells high. The Monogram kit is a good one and has the 4 cylinder engine. I hope for it to be re-released. Bob
