The more I handle this model, the more it just falls apart!  I went to drill out the cylinder heads for plug wires and the heads come off!  Plus, I need to make a distributor for each head.  That should be easy enough to make.  I drilled out one of the wheels for a new mounting pin which I ended up making from scratch.

Mike, I've been wondering how you folks get the models apart on these redux projects. I guess you just answered my question!!!!

I built a Magnum PI 308 about a year ago.  I had the original Revell kit from the 80's, and had to buy another on Ebay for parts.  I removed the roof on the Revell kit to make it a spider. It came out pretty well. Ferrari logo decals from the Far East on Ebay.

I wish I could post photos here but it's been a long time. I'll have to figure it out again when I have time.

The idea has always been to build them without turning them into a gluebomb!  Use just enough glue and sometimes don't scrape the plating or the paint off.

Mike, good luck in the restoration. I had this kit in the mate 80's and it was completed to show / competition standards... that was until my wife accidently knocked it off a shelf which launched it into more parts than I could count. It seems yours has faired better. 

Did you also purchase TC's chopper kit or the model of Higgins with the dogs? No,... I didn't either.

The 308 in its time was not really a bad kit at all, looking good so far. Are you going to display it under some palm trees when done? (just kidding).

I find the 308 to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing of the Ferraris.  Simple, clean lines, good proportions, and very 1980s.  I love the “torpedo tubes”.

I didn’t watch the show though.    Except for a brief glimpse while channel surfing.  Magnum was chasing this dude through the back of the old theater in Kaimuki where I live, and they came out in Waikiki!  That’s like over 2 miles away!  I thought to myself “Wow, Magnum runs really fast!”

Okay cue the music.

I'm enjoying following this. The kit has been on my list to obtain for years but I've never done it. A long time ago I knew a guy who had a very used 308 but I never got a ride it. Thanks for sharing

Oh that's awesome!!! Love it!!! I'm watching the series right now. 

Someone commented that they had to modify the seat to lower it because Selleck was so tall. It's funny if you watch closely you'll notice that the top of Selleck's head stuck out an inch/ couple of cms above the windscreen.

It sounds like your Ferrari didn't fair well.  My wife once thought she would surprise me by dusting all my models with a duster and Endust!  The swirl marks from the Endust were horrendous!  She also knocked off many side mirrors and attennas.  This is the only piece from Magnum PI that I have.  I wasn't interested in TC's helicopter or any other piece of Magnum's memoribilia.  I once drove a Ferrari 328 GTSi (basically the same car with a larger engine) and what a ride that was!

I got the engine wired with Radio Shack blue wrapping wire.  I got the front suspension fixed with a new wheel pin and I detail painted the dash.

The 1:1 Ferrari 308 GTSi is a really beautiful car. I'll be interested as to how your kit turns out.

Ouch! I don't like anyone else touching my models- it always ends with something broken even if they don't intend it.

One of the guys in our club builds amazing detailed ship models. He had them displayed on a wall in his hobby room. One day his wife went to hang a photo in the next room. She started driving the nail, wham, wham, wham, CRASH!!! She went to look and saw that from her banging on the other side of the wall all of his ships had been jarred off the wall and smashed into the floor. Thankfully they're still happily married as far as I know...

Magnum was one of my favorite shows!  I have been long searching for this kit, I will be following along closely.

I really like Movies and TV Shows cars and I remember watching Magnum P.I. as a kid and dreaming about driving a Ferrari like this one... I enjoy following your builds since SAM, Mr. Mike.

Do you know if this kit differs from a standard Ferrari 308 kit? Some time ago I read about the Miami Vice Ferrari 365 kit that had some differences with a standard one to reflect the actual TV Show car that was a Corvette based kit car, for instance.

Thanks Glandring!  I have always liked the styling of the Ferrari 308.  I like it much more than any of the new Ferraris on the market now.  I need to figure out how to go about repairing the mis-shapened seats and converting the single exhaust to a dual exhaust car like the actual machine.

FJSigma, I am aware of the differences of the Miami Vice Daytona Spyder and that it was a kitcar based on the Corvette.  A Testarossa stunt car was made from a '71 De Tomaso Pantera after the first version was considered unsatisfactory.  It was based on a de-bodied Corvette.  

I went and checked on the body and parts that I am stripping with Easy-Off Oven Cleaner.  Not bad.  Pretty much ready for a bath and some scrubbing in the kitchen sink.  The chassis is up on 4 wheels after I made a new rear axle using some 1/16th inch styrene rod.

The chassis is now fairly complete.  I'm still thinking about the exhaust tips since this 308 came with a single exhaust pipe and I want duals like the Magnum 308.  I got the interior rebuilt and the rear cover installed.

Anybody can create a Magnum PI Ferrari just as long as the Ferrari is the correct year.  There was nothing really special about Magnum's Ferrari 308 GTSi.  Revell used a current Ferrari 308 model kit off the shelf and created box art to match the Magnum PI TV show.  The kit itself was probably an older kit, hence the single exhaust pipe out the back.
