29 Ford Model A Roadster Lowboy

Thanks oldermodelguy!  I wasn't sure of what color to paint this.  I picked up a free can of Stellar Blue Pearl at a Club meeting and I thought I would give it a try.  It should look great with the light tan interior I am planning for it.  I think it was a color combo from a early to mid '70s Lincoln Mark that I keep thinking about. 

Can't wait to see this one Mike! You are knocking these builds out of the park.

Tan interiors always go well with maroons, darker blues, mid to dark greens imo. I'm doing a 1/16 31 Ford and the interior is more saddle colored ( hint of red in there, the convertible boot is a tanish buff and the body Washington blue. The whole project is on hold because I'm not charged up over the Washington blue finish.itself. I shot it in acrylic lacquer and the buffing is tenuous, no end. I don't know why MCW doesn't use a slower thinner in their lacquer, should have bought enamel anyway ! I always win with enamel.

Some of your builds are dead on to my tastes in hot rods. Although I would like to do a full fendered A or B with a hemi. Did one when I was a kid in a teal green and that was a might long time ago lol. Haven't done one since. This A I'm doing is stock.

Speaking of Hemis, I once did a '32 5 window hot rod with a 392 CI Hemi.

Lately, I avoid using a paint I am not familiar with unless it is to experiment with it.  I use spray cans exclusively unless I have a need for a specific color, then I use my airbrush.

I have finally finished the Small Block Chevy with its three deuces.  I wired the engine and added a ignition coil since Revell never included one.

I primered and painted the '29 Roadster today, but the results were not what I had hoped for.  This hot paint crazed the plastic inspite of the primer I used.  I guess some sanding is in order for this hot rod.

I hear you on this but then I find myself pretty much never happy with hot lacquers on plastic models. Not that thrilled really with hot acrylic lacquer when I shot 1/1 for that matter. Now nitrocelulos lacquer is another matter or the new hybrids.

Just fwiw over in MCM forums there have been a lot of complaints about Duplicolor of late crazing plastic right through the primer. I should have said something before you shot it, I'm sorry this happened.

I have shot Dupli-Color paints before and I have never had this problem.  So the issue must be with this particular paint.

It is not your fault that this paint was too hot for my primer.  

I have been assembling the chassis and the wheels and tires.

I'm starting to think you work 24/7 on these things !!

I'm retired and with the Covid-19 Pandemic hitting us, it seems like that is all I do.  But, I do other things, so model building is not 24/7.

I've been working on assembling the chassis.  I sure hate these spindly front suspensions!  Anyway, the chassis is up on its wheels and tires and it's level, too.  Now, to figure out what I am going to do about the body...

I had this vision of using the Coupe's inner structure and it just doesn't fit.  So I took the Roadster's inner structure and placed inside the Roadster's body and, of course it fits better.  I took my hobby knife and scored the interior panels and removed them and I liked the look a whole lot better.  I am moving forward and using these side panels instead.

A mockup to check my work.  This is looking great and I wished I thought of it earlier!  I sanded the body and now to take it apart for a bath.  The firewall will be primed and painted, but I don't know if it would be white or body colored.  John took the original dash and I had a spare from the AMT '32 Ford Phaeton.  Now to primer it, paint and detail it.

I kinda like the patina of the body after your sanding and whatnot.  Maybe a rat rod?

Thank you John, but if it ain't shiny, it ain't mine!  I don't do patina or rat rods.

Just to me, firewall body color. You're on your own with the top /boot lol.

I have decided to use Tamiya TS-53 Deep Metallic Blue which is close in color and shade to the Dupli-Color Stellar Blue Pearl.  The Dupli-Color paint seems to be too hot chemically.

That's going to be a good looking color on that car.

Thanks Joe and oldermodelguy!  I had forgotten that I had this paint in my paint drawer.  I should take an inventory of what I have in there.  As you get older...the memory of...what was I talking about? 

I took a piece of wide masking tape and masked off the grille so I could paint the grille surface flat black.  When I removed the tape, I was left with bleed-through and tape residue on the chrome.  Now to figure out how to remove the bleed-through and the tape residue.  The seats have been painted.  I sanded the body, but the side panels need to be repainted since they fell victim to my dropping my small bottle of paint thinner for brush cleaning.

I used to spray my grills with a really cut back #2 or 2.5 tip and needle so fine a spray you caouldn't really see the mist but if I got in to about a 1/4 inch of the surface paint started to collect. I moved to a brush thoughand just hand paint those items these days. especially for washes where you want the chrome bars showing. That A I'd probably do with the #2 and lacquer. I say that and then probably would grab the hand brush anyway lol ( getting fickle in my 70's here, or daffy !) What I do is vasoline the chrome, just a fine film that wipes right off with tissues and 50% mix of alcohol.

Thanks for the tips oldermodelguy!  I took a piece of wide masking tape and burnished it down and sprayed my flat black paint for a uniform covering.  Apparently, my burnishing was not good enough and I had some bleed-through.  The bleed-through doesn't bother me as much as the tape residue and I don't want to damage the chrome plating when I try to remove the residue.

Thats going to be a fantastic looking car when you are done. Cant wait ti see it finished.
