1/350 Tamiya DD445 Fletcher kit colors
Posted by cadman on Saturday, December 26, 2020 11:27 AM

Hello, I have the tamiya paints that the the kit calls for but some of the colors do not look like the picture on the box or that I have seen on the internet. Have any of you fellows painted this kit with the Tamiya paints and what colors or mixes did you change.

Thanks in advance , George

The box art is Measure 12 mod. The instructions call for Sea Blue splotches on the hull over 'Dark Gray", and I guess 'Dark Gray' splotches over 'Neutral Gray' above the main deck. Problem being that "Dark Gray" and "Neutral Gray" aren't USN colors.

Measure 12mod uses combinations of three colors on the verticals in almost all cases. My own choice was to use Ocean Gray on the hull as background and Haze Gray on the verticals above the deck as background, with Sea Blue splotches below and Ocean Gray splotches above.

So if you choose that route, finding Tamiya equivalents for those colors isn't too difficult but you are right, they are mixes.

Or, in acrylics AK makes USN set #2 with all you need.

Other measures to choose:

Does anyone have the Tamiya acrylic color formulas for Haze Gray and Ocean Gray?

Tamiya's Ocean Gray xf82 does not look right to me.

Be aware that WW2 Haze Gray and post war Haze Gray are two different colors.

There may be some paint mix formulas at IPMS online, probably worth a web search for "tamiya acrylic mix USN colors"

USN paints were based off a purple-blue shading formula, this can scan odd to the eye just as is.  (Much like the array which is WWII "Olive Drab" is not often the color one thinks it is.)

And if you ask 6 different modelers about their recipes for USN purple-blue colors using Tamiya's paints, you will likely get a dozen different and wrong answers.
