Battle Axe Monitor suggestions?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 10:15 PM
I just ordered this thing from Squadron. I have some experience building limited edition kits. Any suggestions on this one specifically? Thanks.

Without knowing anything about the kit, the only advice I can offer is patience.

Sometimes, limited edition kits are incredible, they build well, and look great. Other times, they look great in the box but are a bear to build (Amati U-boat). Other times, they just plain stink....lol.

I've done a few, and every part gets scrutinized to see if there's a way to scratchbuild the part to make it better. Aside from that...measure twice, cut once!

This one has a reputation of being a fairly easy build as long as you are patient with removing the pieces from the (inevitably huge) attachment points. Hey, I can do that. The other thing, apparently, is that the hull sides are just straight plastic strips, and you bend them onto the upper and lower hull, along with bulkheads, as you attach, but apparently it is very straightforward if rather unordthodox.

I have the Amati U-boot, and didn't even bother to buld it when I saw the plain resin hull! [:0] Life's too short!

But this is an easier proposition, from all accounts. And she's a grand ol' gal of the U.S. navy, whose contribution to the future of naval warfare cannot be underestimated, and I am looking forward to displaying her built.

Here're two links to reviews of the kit, in case anyone's interested -- and with eight hits on this thread in two days, it looks like no one is! Tongue [:P] Notice in the photo in the second link, the model appears to be slightly warped -- the deck doesn't look exactly flat, though it may be an illusion.

The kit looks OK to me. Compared to the early Billings kits it looks quite simple. I would see it as a step on the road to scratch building and would have a go at it myself.
