Discussion on "background" photography
Posted by Don Stauffer on Sunday, July 26, 2015 11:37 AM

Over in the General Model Discussion forum there has been an interesting thread on the realistic (like with photodrop background) photography vs the "eBay" style photograph.  An interesting discussion with reasons on both types (personally I do both but really like the realistic shot type).

I would like to do more photography to pose my models in front of; however, all I have is my smartphone camera, and I dont feel like it can get the best quality shots due to stability issues.  I cant justify going out and spending $$ on a nice camera set-up to take pictures of models, and I HIGHLY doubt the wife would call that justification for a purchase.  Guess I'll just sit back and enjoy looking at the pictures others do.

Give it a try even with the phone camera.  Those cameras have good depth of field because of their small size (depth of field is inversely proportional to camera focal length and hence size).  And the background picture does not have to be super good because you actually want it to be slightly out of focus, and lack of resolution looks just like general out of focus.

Also, it depends a lot on the phone.  Some phone cameras are quite good, others so-so.
