James Prinzivalli

Antioch, California

James got into the swing of things with a 1/13 scale Pendulum from Moebius’ Monster Scenes series, taking a break from his usual armor modeling and treating himself for Advanced Modelers Syndrome. To paint the wood beams, he base-coated with Testors Model Master dark tan enamel, sealed that with protective layers of Testors Dullcote, then applied Minwax dark walnut wood stain over-coated with more Dullcote. He airbrushed more Model Master enamels as well as Tamiya and Vallejo acrylic colors, applying washes and dry-brushing throughout the process. Rust stains were added with burnt sienna oil paint and pastels.

“I used a different technique for the skull,” he says. “I painted it with Golden titan buff, protected that with Dullcote, and then, using yellow ochre artist’s oil straight from the tube, scrubbed the whole skull and immediately wiped it off with a Turpenoid-moistened paper towel, leaving a light film on the surface. A glaze was applied with Games Workshop yellow, then Grypone sepia and Devlon mud inks. Finally, the edges of the teeth, nose, and brow were edged with a glaze of Tamiya flat white.

 “This was fun!”
