Subscription renewal advertising
Posted by Ray Marotta on Friday, June 20, 2014 12:07 PM

To whom it may concern,

EVERY time I visit the FSM website I am exhorted by continuous popups requesting I renew my subscription.  My subscription expires in JANUARY 2018!  I'm getting sick and tired of closing popups. Do something about it before you start losing subscribers.

Annoyed,

Ray Marotta

I have to say that bothers me a bit too. Whenever I go to the Forum it tells me - in small print, not a popup - of the date when my subscription expires. Seems like that ought to be enough.

Logically, it seems like the only people who would take up those subscription offers would be non-members of the Forum. Do many of them "visit" the Forum? Maybe so.

One of the things that most bothers me on the forum site is the image of the mag that sticks up above the taskbar area.  Often when I am replying to a message, I have just the last line to go, and the image covers up that line, so I have to reach for my trackball to scroll up another line.  I wish they would stick that in a corner or somewhere, or use a smaller image that did not stick up into the useful areas of the display.

I agree with Don.  It's particularly awkward when I'm trying to type a post on my phone, and the FSM icon is relatively larger compared to the rest of the screen.  Several times I've lost in-progress posts when I've hit the "Done" button in an effort to get some more typing space, and thereby somehow blasted everything I've already typed into the ether.

The best solution, I guess, is for me to type all my posts on my desktop computer.  But surfing on the phone sure is fun - and addictive.  I agree with Don.  Surely there's a place on the page to put that icon where it doesn't interfere with posts.

They could also use their subscription rolls in conjunction with their subscription ads so current subscribers wouldn't be deluged with it.  Since subscribers to the magazine are the only ones who can log into the FSM site, it should be a no-brainer to stop those ads.

Interesting. I was under the impression that only subscribers could log in. Am I mistaken on that?

I believe that subscribers get access to extra content on the websites that non-subscribers don't have access to. Other than that, anyone can register to the website.

True I get the magazine at my Local hobby store.  I cant look at some reviews and articles online but get full range on the forums.

Maybe adding a "Do not show again" check box on the pop-up would be a nice solution.

That's the best and probably the easiest to implement solution yet...

Popups are a trial.

Occasional factual, grammatical, or spelling variations are inherent to this thesis and should not be considered as defects, as they enhance the individuality and character of this document.

This topic was discussed before, so you might want to look for the thread.  I say that, because I think there was a resolution of some kind.  I know that I used to see that popup, too, but I no longer do.  I can't remember, however, what I did, or what someone else did, to hide the popup.

Maybe Tim or Aaron will reply to your thread with more info.

If I remember correctly, the popup is not controlled by FSM but by Kalmbach Publishing.

I absolutely could not agree more. Geez, ESPECIALLY if you've already subscribed, you ought to get a reprieve from pop-up hell! These things are annoying as heck, and I would argue that they never sway ANYONE to do ANYTHING that they push!!!

Agreed.  I also hear popups & side adds can be easy subjects for malware to glob onto.  Its safer to go direct to the website (say its a Geico add on ebays site).  At least that's what a computer tech said.   I just find them annoying but it could be worse.  Some video game websites make you put in you full birthday via scroll menu before accessing the site.   :/

I agree, it took me 3 times before I could finally get past the signup page that was blocking the website.  Come on guys, I just renewed not too long ago and every time I try to get into the forums, it almost takes an act of Congress to get whereI want to go.  The pop-ups are getting very annoying also, I would think that once is enough, not ninety billion of them.  Please, limit them to one when you first get into the site.

Most of the time I get two of them on the main page and then another pair on the main forum page.   Somewhat annoying, but a price I guess we have to pay for having the site.
